Cutting holes for electrical outlets in huge tile. In this video I show how I cut holes for outlets that fall in the middle of a tile and requires that I cut two square holes for the outlets in the wall. I use a grinder with a dry cutting blade to easily make the needed cuts to the correct size. All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area. It helps that you have a high quality porcelain. We deal with bad tiles sometimes, that require pre-drilling holes in the corners or else they will break. No matter how slow or carefully you cut they will run out in the corners. I’ve noticed it is mostly on DalTile factory porcelains… but recently had a terrible time with an Italian factory from Happy Floors 24x48 that was very expensive. It’s almost like you never know what your going to get, and it’s frustrating!

You are absolutely correct, these were actually ceramic tiles, pretty much no danger of cracking. Modern porcelain tiles can have a lot of tension built up in the tile because of the manufacturing process, so drilling out the corners is a must, as you say, but in some cases even that is not enough and other methods must be used. Maybe one day we can talk about it in a collaboration.

Sal I found a much better way to cut the screw holes for the outlets. You dont need to at all if you use the shortest screws but they make a 1/8” hole bit for a drill that fits perfectly inside the screw hole on the outlet. Just install the outlets and come through with the bit. So easy!!

What is the purpose of the wood strips screwed to the wall?

A ledger. So if you want to do most of the tile work without standing on your shower tray which could be sensitive like foam. Do all the tile except the bottom row then do the floor and follow up with the bottom row.
