CUTTING LARGE ROUND HAY BALES WITH A CHAIN SAW

Using a chain saw is a fast way to cut large round bales up into manageable sections. It will take me between 2 and 3 hours to cut up a bale and move into my barn. The goats like the straw from the round bales because it is already pulled apart and easy to eat.
Large round bales are generally less expensive to purchase than store purchased small bales. I pay $70 per bale to have them delivered to my farm. If you live in the country, chances are good you may find a farmer with large round bales for sale.
From personal experience, I have found it much better to cut it up and store these bales. Waste not, want not.

Thank you for this. 5x5 bales are half the price per pound than 60 pound square bales. Even with the waste, it’ll be a lot cheaper.

I have a couple of very picky cows and wonder if they will eat it if I cut with my chainsaw. Do the goats actually eat it or does the bar oil change that?

The goats and sheep on my farm do eat the bales cut with bar oil. I have learned to use vegetable oil instead of bar oil for my chain lube.

I use an electric chain saw to reduce the likelyhood of fire. It is lubed with corn oil right of the shelf at our local grocery.

Are you saying the corn oil doesn't catch fire? I thought the embers were caused by the friction of the chain.

@@pinestrawoutlet Really good question. Thanks for asking for clarification. I am saying that I use an electric chain saw as it is less likely to cause a fire than an internal combution engine (gas) powered saw. Yes, there is still a possibility of fire but less so with an electric saw. Ignitions related to oils do not change. Oil is a combustible.

I tried that and the hay ket getting jammed in the chainsaw. Instead I just used a rake and peeled off what I needed

Might be easier to just make a small top to keep rain off and wrap sides with one cattle panel. Bar oil residue isn’t too good for the goats or any other livestock for that matter.

Maybe a vegetable oil would be a good choice for bar lube. I have tried cattle panel and a cover.

Did you take out the regular bar oil and put in vegetable oil?
