People always freak out at the idea of mixed metals because of galvanic corrosion.. but what happens when AIOs use both copper and metal for a long period of time?? Let's cut one open and find out!

I'm an HVAC service tech and it's pretty common to see copper and aluminum in comfort cooling systems. Copper piping with aluminum fins on the indoor and outdoor coils is standard construction across the industry for residential and commercial. I don't know if it's the alloys used, or the refrigerants, or the grounding, but we hardly ever see a failure from galvanic corrosion.

Dear internet, as a Plumber who deals with mixed metals all the time, I can assure you this is a real issue... when both dissimilar metals are touching. In this case, you have a separation between the copper and aluminum only linking them with the rubber hose. The only way this would be affected is if the liquid inside corroded one metal, and the pieces that break away makes its way to the other side and came into contact with the dissimilar metal. But to be honest, if that were to happen, the dissimilar metals would be the last of your concerns.

What's the point of a vise if it's not bolted to the table? At this point you could've just hold it with your hands xDD
@pr0xZen
@pr0xZen 5 жыл бұрын
This. I guess its for cosmetic reasons when its not in use, but there are good middle grounds. I have a fold-down workbench, with drill press, vices, grinders etc on it. But its in my garage, and i can't park my car there without folsing up the bench. So I marked the holes, drilled appropriate size through, bashed in machine thread nut inserts from the back-/underside. Now they're quick and easy to install/uninstall on the bench, the holes are smooth, material don't strip after a few installs, and once in place its more secure than with a clamp or big wood-style screws.

Fully agree that a vise should be bolted down. However given the limited use Jay probably has for one on his main video bench, I suggest bolting it to a foot long 2x6 instead of the bench, with carriage bolts sunk in to the underside. Then use a couple cheap C clamps to secure it to the bench when needed.

That smell/green colour is due to propylene glycol in the liquid which in AIO's is used at a much higher concentration than open loop inhibitors i.e. the liquid itself is not just "water" with glycol in it but more of a diluted gycol solution which is why it barely causes corrosion. And the reason why this method is only used in closed loops rather than liquid intended for custom loops is because when you expose the glycol to air it oxidizes forming acids, in an open loop you're more likely to have more air trapped in it where as closed loops are factory pressure filled. Therefore this is not a good case to try to debunk galvanic corrosion, if you want to debunk it make a proper custom loop with copper blocks and an aluminium rad... use straight up distilled water with no additives and leave it running for a few weeks.
@Bobcat665
@Bobcat665 5 жыл бұрын
So, then... You can prevent oxidization of the glycol by topping off the reservoir with an inert gas? :^)
@Flyinspaghetti
@Flyinspaghetti 5 жыл бұрын
@@Bobcat665 Well a lot of of people use Ethylene Glycol (Antifreeze) in the water cooling space, issue is Ethylene Glycol is toxic while Propylene Glycol isn't. Therefore AIO companies can get away with a ton of regulatory health & safety hassle by simply using a safe fluid, however propylene glycol has the issue of oxidizing to form lactic acid so they pretty much pressure fill the AIO's and keep them in a closed unserviceable design.
@MyouKyuubi
@MyouKyuubi 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, or, it could just be that the liquid is actually allowing a slight amount of galvanic corrosion because the liquid in the system is 4 fucking years old. It "Fights" galvanic corrosion, it's not galvanic corrosion-proof. :P You are supposed to change the liquid and/or the cooler every now and again for a reason, you know.
@Darthquackius
@Darthquackius 5 жыл бұрын
He isnt trying to debunk galvanic corrosion. He straight up says he doesnt recommend mixing metals and it only works at all in a specialized loop with known metal mixtures and coolant chemical composition. Now it would be interesting to see a custom loop designed to run efficiently with a custom fluid for mixed metal. But why would he waste time running a distilled water and mixed metal loop? That's a known result. Galvanic corrosion right from the goddamn start.
@Malus1531
@Malus1531 5 жыл бұрын
Flyinspaghetti explained why propylene glycol isn't used in open loops, but not why AIOs use it in the first place. It does help with corrosion, but there are other chemicals that can probably do that better and with less negative effects. Propylene/ethylene glycol have lower thermal conductivity and specific heat than water (worse at transferring heat) and higher viscosity (pump has to work harder). Ethylene glycol is better than propylene glycol in this respect, but as Flyinspaghetti noted the former is toxic and the latter is not. Either way, still worse than water. So why use it? One of the main benefits is that it raises the boiling point and lowers the freezing point. This allows the AIO to survive more extreme conditions, especially during shipping (cargo holds of planes can get pretty cold). This isn't as necessary for open loops, where you're not adding fluid until it's in the comfort of your home. Good point about the acids though, didn't know that.

There are like 10 games atm that can make us of RTX like BF5, Control, Shadow of Tombraider, Watch Dogs, Metro Exodus, Wolfenstein, Dome, DL2 and Minecraft (for what ever minecraft needs that;). Additionally the only AAA titles to come for the next 6-7 months with RTX are for now Cyberpunk and CoD with a couple of no name games. I quite like RTX but it just covers like 20% of the current AAA games and only like 1% of the mid-range and non of the indi-games. SO not most of the games but just some good once are using ray tracing and for now it isnt realy worth it but in 1-2 years maybe.

I would like to see what happens when you take various coolants and run them for a couple weeks to a month with different metals. I know that would mean a few pumps, reservoirs and radiators, but, show what happens. Also, a loop with just distilled water, and compare them. Or, find a way to reuse AIO's to cut down on materials used or potentially discarded. Great video, BTW
@Justin-nq3xb
@Justin-nq3xb 5 жыл бұрын
As far as my knowledge on electrochemical systems goes, I really don't think corrosion is an issue to worry about with PC water-cooling. There's a "galvanic series" of metals basically showing which metals will corrode which and the closer the metals being mixed are to one another the harder it is for one to corrode the other; copper and aluminum are rather close on that list. Also, another factor in corrosion reactions is the surface area ratios between the two metals. The preferred system is to have the "more noble metal" have a greater surface area in comparison to the other metal; in this case aluminum is "more noble" and the surface area in that radiator is surely much larger than the copper in the block.
@AsthmaQueen
@AsthmaQueen 5 жыл бұрын
ya thats another thing to take into consideration is the type of fluid AIO's are using along side as an above poster pointed out the Area rule. Since there is very small amount of copper exposed to fluid and on top of that the fluid is likely highly glycol based and probably pretty far from actually water it will have vastly different properties and corrosion inhibitors etc that will likely help prevent this sort of corrosion. If you took the EK or Thermal take Block/Radiator and mixed it with Copper hardline, I guarantee you'd see results

This is gonna be the last straw. A lot of us purchased a 2080Ti at exorbitant price under the assumption that their wouldn't be a Titan this go around as Nvidia has been stating that Titans were meant as prosumer cards. Now we're seeing the RTX Titan in the hands of influencers and gaming component reviewers (unlike with the prosumer Titan V). This is some Bullshit.

Even bigger news: Combustion engines in cars are usually made from iron or aluminum, the cylinder is made of steel press fitted into the engine block, the cooler chamber is already made of two metals, and the cooler in the front is usually made from aluminum or rarely copper, and if it is not circualting completely antifreeze, then it is usually mainly water. The only corrosion comes from iron getting rusty (iron and water, what a surprise), and the rest is just filled up with the slug. If the coolant is pure then it is not making chemical reaction with the cooler (so actually cars run for tens of years without having problem with the cooler). And if the fluid is dielectric then the metals are galvanically insulated, no reaction happens even if having different electronegativity (aka different metals).

Thanks for the video, I was wondering where the temperature probe was located. Now for the interesting questions. The probe on the cooler runs the fan speeds on the unit or doe's the MB control it? What is the difference in the MB probe temps vs the AIO probe temp being that probe is offset of the chip and more than likely sensing the fluid temp and not the CPU temp.

I had a H100i that failed in my old AMD 9590 system that was about 4 years old. Didn't find out until the system failed to boot after about 30 seconds, and trying just about everything to get to boot to windows. When I opened the case there was liquid in the bottom and a spot where it was dripping down the graphics card. Guessing there was either no coolant left and or the pump didn't work. This caused the CPU to thermally shutdown immediately without booting all the way into windows. I'm thinking my failure was not due to corrosion but maybe a seal leak from that space heater of a processor 9590. Maybe I should take it apart and see what happened. Thanks for the video, Casey.

More specifically this so-called ‘metal’ is aluminium (not sure what alloy, probably 6061 Aluminium which is pretty cheap and very easily machined). I’ve noticed that Americans in particular tend to have a very simplistic view of what exactly ‘metal’ is. They’ll refer to shitey zinc, forged steel, stamped steel, copper, and aluminium as if they are the same thing lol morons. Tbf ABS plastic is basically stronger than awful ‘pot metal’ zinc.

Or I can tell you failures usually caused by dove tails failing prematurely due to an over hardened trigger hammer that is not smoothed out properly in AK systems, or the difference between a cast and forged truniun on AK weapon systems. But I don't call people idiots cause they don't know that. Or I can tell you how to get rid of fire ants in your yard and call people idiots for not knowing. Or many other things. Lucky for me i've worked in many different places and know a little about a lot. The thing with Galvanic Corrosion is, there must be dissimilar metals in the presence of and electrolytic solution for it to occur. The use of specialized coolants removes this electrolytic solution, rendering the use of dissimilar metals harmless, unless you were to use the system for a decade, give or take a year or two.

Actually modern automotive engine blocks/heads/radiators are aluminum. Years ago when cast iron was the normal for blocks/heads using copper radiators, even doing a yearly flush fill could/would produce gunk in the system. Hence why you also flushed the system rather than just drain/fill. Needless to say, inhibitors have also improved over the years.

Another thing people don't seem to realise with mixed metal cooling solutions, is that cars have been running mixed metals for a long time. Worst being copper radiator, alloy heads, and cast iron block. (Not particularly common, but did exist, go look SA22C for example, not heads and a block but same same.) They see worse conditions that a PC cooling solution ever will, and simply by using proper coolant (with anti corrosive agents) and controlling stray currents, they last just fine.

I have even been used as a witness in a case where I proved most mowers are set to fail as they use steel against aluminum heads without a treated sleeve here is some advice to pass onto you viewers galvanic corrosion happens when the metals rub and only when the metals rub its why you dot mix steel and tin unless its been treated the metals cause this when they rub together they must touch for this to happen its why we nylon washers between metals
It happened again... and this time it was NASTY
