I think it is! I have just never been able to do it the traditional way, and find its 10x quicker if you can do it effectively. Watch out for the judgy judies though. 😂 Some old schoolers will come for ya cuttin like me. 😂😂😂🖤🖤🖤

I’ve noticed you use a pulling down action when demonstrating the nippers/grozing pliers. I used to use them like that, nipping very small pieces from a piece of glass. That resulted in exploding glass everywhere and jagged edges. But I recently asked about it at my local glass shop and the person helping me showed me that it’s a straight pull-apart motion. I tried it there and it worked beautifully! I’m not sure if pulling the piece off with the nippers is the action you use, or the pull-down/nip action, but I found it super useful knowledge. I was just using the nippers wrong! Also, the flat side should be on top of the glass. I tried it with the flat side on the bottom and it made the glass explode. But flat on top it worked to pull a small piece away with no explosions!

Hello Dawn! Yes! You can use them pulling out or down, also use them to grind away at the glass (intentionally exploding) bits off, like you would cutting glass with scissors! I just don't use them at all! Never been a fan, I am a 1 cut kind of gal! Thank you for watching!! 🖤

Thank you for taking the time to make it as easy and simple as possible I went out and bought glass, cutters, iron and soldier two days ago thinking I don't need to take a class or anything (I'm the stereotypical "I don't need to ask for help" guy) and I just wasted three hours of trying to soldier my glass without foil but long story short I just wanted to say thank you for the help😉

This video made me brave enough to go to a local stained glass class. I'm already hooked. Instructor was impressed with my glass cutting, but my secret was I had watched this video multiple times. :) Then I managed to cut my thumb, on the outside of my thumb, enough to drip blood all over my shirt. Wholly crap... your video is soooooo good. The fine details are fantastic. I recently purchased running pliers from amazon to help with my current project. I was squeezing as hard as I could and I couldn't get it to crack the glass. Figured I got a bad pair. After you explained the top of the pliers should be concaved a bit I ran out to my garage and after taking the plastic bumpers off I noticed they have zero curve. Guess I ordered the wrong item. I just ordered the newest runners from Brier so hoping I get to experience that tiny "click" when the glass separates. Funny that you hate the grosser pliers because that is my main tool. Hopefully the new runners change the way I break glass. Keep up the GREAT videos. Just saw one with a glass church. You got my creative mind thinking and also thank you for also mentioning and suggesting for others to make their own designs. I agree that that is what makes it so personal.

Mackenzie, why haven’t I seen your videos before. I was obsessed with learning the correct way of using stained glass tools and how to cut glass etc, and armed myself with tools from the US (I paid more in shipping than the tools themselves), but I just didn’t find really good, informative videos, and just used my nippers instead to make mosaic pieces. This was over two years ago, but because we moved house during the lockdowns, all my stained glass stuff was packed away. Well, I shall now watch your videos and get back on track. I've been working with stained glass for a long time and do the "old" way of cutting curves. I'm going to try your way now! You make it look so easy! I use to do stain glass back in the day 20 + years ago but because of my job (lots to do with a ton of pressure) it had to take a back seat... I now have time and I'm getting back into it and KZbin is helping a lot with getting re-familiar with the art... Am not quite ready to junk my groziers yet, but I never took them out of my tool box for this piece - a box with streaming sashes. Fun experience, thanks to you.

Hi :) I am new to this and in the process of getting all the gear in order to start making my own things .... I came searching for guidance in how much oil to put in the pistol cutter as I put enough in to fill about a 1/3rd and lo and behold oil was leaking everywhere so here I am and wish I had found you before that happened but hey happy little accidents lead onto greater things :) I also have 2 pairs of the growzer (nipper) pliers wide and narrow and do not feel too happy with them so will try the running pliers only and see how I get on with them and if ok then will stick with them for sure. :) I have now subscribed and look forward to learning more from you as I now binge your videos LOL .. Thank you for your tuition and help with the basic of things .. well they are when you know!!! Thanks to you I do now .. off to empty out the pistol cutter of oil if it hasn't already done so by itself ;)

I am now starting my journey with a great guide and feel much more confident already. I have done a couple of classes and like you mentioned in one of your videos something inside just 'clicked' and you just know its something your going to enjoy doing. I LOVE this!!!! I’m a moon lover myself but glass moons are the devil! 😂 I have ruined so much glass trying to cut moons and even when I get it, it’s hit and miss. I’m right next to our a/c when I’m cutting so that must be a factor too. Thank you so much! You are a wonderful teacher! 💜

I've been doing stained glass for over 10 years, using the same Toyo Pistol grip cutter, and never had it leak. I only fill it with a small amount of oil, since a little goes a long way. Also, your using the nippers the wrong way, flat side should be on the top to gently pull the glass apart. The curved edge on top should only be used to remove small pieces of glass left after the cut. Love the detail you give in the videos, very informative and worth watching.

Hi Mackenzie, thanks for your amazing videos. I love watching them, full of good advice. Just started with stained glass and not too good with cutting!? Got a pair of running pliers but I can’t get them to work? Got arthritis in my hand, so maybe I’m not pressing hard enough? Started with the pencil cutter but I have changed now to the pistol, much better. Thanks again Marianne.

Hi Marianne, alot of the time the advice I give is making sure your starting and ending your score to each edge of the glass. If your doing that, those running pliers should snap it with ease! Just keep practicing!

Hi Donna! I'm so glad you feel like your learning alot, I hope to do classes somehow online soon. I'm trying to figure that out. But, I change mine whenever I can feel and hear the glass score and break differently. Its hard to explain to know when, vs, just knowing with practice. I have about 5 spare glass cutters/tips ready to go so when you have that bad span of shit just breaking horribly, it's no biggie to toss the cutter and start with a new one. You want the score to be making that crisp, sharp scoring sound and to be able to snap your glass with ease. If your glass cutter and oil is old, it's going to make that alot harder.

I am really enjoying your videos...very helpful. On a couple of the pieces you cut there was a little bump of glass outside the scored line. Normally I would use the nippers to gnaw away those little bumps. How do you do it? Thanks so much

This is great, I’ve always always wanted to do stained glass but I can never cut ❤️ Oh, and you’re so right about the pistol cutter. I’m a glass bead maker and after almost 20 years of doing so, my hands are showing arthritis. I hold from 6mm to about 20 gauge wire for hours a day, spinning the glass mandrels, it’s getting painful.
