Jerry Miculek - Pro Shooter

Күн бұрын

Jerry tests the classic western myth (As seen in movies such as 'The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly, 'Back to the Future Part III', and much more) that you can cut a rope and save the day with just your gun, a bullet, and some superhuman aim; Using period correct rope and ammo, and taking it to the extreme with a .50 cal sniper rifle. The results might actually surprise you!

I'm pretty sure the "shoot the rope" concept originated before guns existed. For example it's a staple of Robin Hood stories. And a arrow (with the proper arrowhead) is a better choice than a bullet for cutting a rope. Either way though it's more reliable (though less dramatic) to shoot the hangman and save your buddy *before* he drops.
@darrellparfitt5908
@darrellparfitt5908 6 жыл бұрын
Oh that's long since covered. You can't save your buddy if he's still standing with his arms bound and his neck in a noose. You shoot the rope in middrop then he can barrel roll and start running while your buddy rides in with an extra horse.

@jondonwayne wayne Well it's your job to shoot the executioner if he's killing your friend isn't it? Also strangulation by hanging was only used on the worst of criminals. It has nothing to do with "skill". It actually is all in where you place the noose's knot if its on a shoulder side it snaps the neck if it's at the back or front it strangles.

@@deg1studios Yep. Bit of trivia, wanna know how the movie's title was translated in Spain? 'Cometieron Dos Errores'. Literally, word by word, it means 'They Made Two Mistakes' - obviously, the first being lynching the wrong man, the second not making damn sure that he was dead for good. Don't tell me that's not one of the best titles for a western tale you've ever heard. We must've had someone here in Spain in the movie business during that era that loved westerns to death, and had the mind of a cowboy and the heart of a poet, because there were more memorable cases, like 'A Few Dollars More'='La Muerte Tenía un Precio' ('Death Had A Price'), 'The Searchers'='Centauros del Desierto' ('Centaurs of the Plains'), or 'Once Upon A Time In The West'='Hasta Que Llegó Su Hora' ('Until His Time Came'). Whoever it was, sure had a flair for epicness, hands down.

Sisal rope is made from the sisal plant, a type of agave related to the tequila agave. The city of Mérida in Yucatan, Mexico grew fabulously wealthy from plantations producing sisal and factories weaving the rope used all through the Industrializing world. At one time, Mérida had more millionaires per capita than any other city on earth! Check out some of the crazy mansions: www.roamingaroundtheworld.com/top-5-things-to-do-in-merida-mexico/

Sisal is a plant related to Yucca and the Joshua Tree. Originally native to Mexico, and used by the Aztecs and Maya for rope making, it is now widely cultivated in hot dry countries in Africa and South America. Most of the sisal used in the US comes from Brazil. It is the most common fibre for very light ropes and twine but it is not as strong as hemp. It has the advantages of low weight and low cost.

in the mid 70s, when I was a kid, I saw a TV show about expert trick shooters. the guy on TV said that there was NO written records of 1 to 1 fast gun draws killing people. so the guy said there was never any 1 to 1 gun fights. well my mother was from the mid south. I told her what the guy on TV said. she told me with a smile that the guy didn't know what he was talking about, and that he needed to talk to my grandfather because my grandfather saw a few 1 to 1 gun fights.

They used my target systems in the TV series "Stars Earn Stripes." When Ruppert the director (Survivor and other shows) said they were going to "shoot the rope" on a hanging target with a .308 Rem bolt gun at 50 yards, I said, "did you bring lunch?" 40 shots later they STILL didn't break the rope. They replaced a section of the rope with a 2" wide x 3" long piece of hard plastic. THEN the target fell when they hit it.

I was standing next to a guy who shot-off his own hat due to his bullet ricocheting back at him. It was a straw type western-ish hat. the bullet punched a hole right through the top portion of the hat. Seriously!! He was shooting a lead conical bullet at a metal target and, unknown to me, he was aiming at a target that was much too close.

I know this video is 4 years old, but looking at the slow motion frames and the damaged rope when you examine it afterwards it appears that the rope broke where the first bullet hit. The force of the rope being hit by the second round was enough to snap the initial remaining threads from the first shot. And there is threads left from the second shot, both in the slow-mo and upon closer inspection afterwards.
@Blakgun
@Blakgun 5 жыл бұрын
Fun video. But with all due respect, Mr. Miculek needs to look closer at where that rope broke when the 45-70 hit it. I'm giving equal credit to the 45 Colt.

*adjusts glasses* In fact, the engravings lessen the shine from the polished metal, so it would have a similar advantage to putting a matte black finish on a gun, decreasing the visibility.

Hello Jerry, Very entertaining but one fact always got left out of the westerns. A properly tied hangman's knot and execution (knot positioned just under the ear with a good drop before coming tight) did not choke the victim but abruptly broke their neck on the fall. So to save them the rope would have to be severed before any weight was on it. Shooting a taut line would only drop a corpse! Also I think and I may be wrong but most lariats were horsehair and manila fiber (a bit stronger than sisal) was readily available. That being said a lot of impromptu hangings were botched affairs where the subject did strangle. We will have to see how you do besting Quigley now!! lol! I always loved the early westerns where they shot the gun out of the opponents hand without injuring him in a gun fight. Hollywood never let facts get in the way of a yarn. Take care. Doug
6 жыл бұрын
Douglas Thompson, I heard a story where the hangman takes the man's weight ,height and build into his figures on how long of a drop it should take. One prisoner had a fight in prison and lost an arm to infection. He was in longer than normal due to that. In that time he got fat while they were caring for him. When his hanging day came they hung him according to his original figures. Because of the missing arm he fell off center and because of his extra weight his head popped off and people watching puked and passed out. That was pretty much the end of hanging for capital punishment. At least, that's the story told me.
