I mean technically, you do gain a minimal amount of extra distance and velocity on the bullet. If you shoot a bullet that goes 1000 feet per second while standing on a train going 1000 feet per second the bullet will be going 2000 feet per second. As long as you shoot towards the front of the train anyway. If you shoot towards the back then the bullets are actually not moving at all, but the train is moving around them. (science.howstuffworks.com/question456.htm) Obviously the amount gained from any pushing or slinging movement would be so tiny it's still absolutely stupid to do it, but hey, technically it works.

A little known fact about the reason behind 'sideways' shooting. A major factor in accuracy is trigger control. Many inexperienced shooters tend to push or pull their shots either left or right caused by gripping the weapon too tightly or just holding it wrong. Turning the weapon sideways pushes or pulls the shots up or down. The shooter is not aiming with sights, rather aiming down the side of the slide. The margin of error is slightly smaller making it more likely to hit your target since almost everyone is taller than they are wide. Something I picked up about 40 years ago. cheers!

There was a guy in the 80s that taught cops and military in seminars to just raise your hand and point naturally. Then put a gun in the hand and do the same. The gun isn't sideways but at a 45 degree angle or so. it is more natural. Basically what @Frank D and @terry saling are saying. More accurate and more control. When we were doing semi-annual qualifications with our M9s, one of the annoyances of the National Guard was that we had to account for every shell casing, which was a PITA considering how far an M9 would eject spent shells. Since I was left-handed and our farthest target was 25m, I found it "convenient" to use a "modified gangsta" that ejected the shell casings closer to my position, making them easier to find and collect. Not what I'd recommend for everyday practice, though . . .

Rumor is shooting sideways originated from WWII with the "broomhandle" Mauser C96. They would convert it from semi-auto to full-auto and when shooting an automatic holding sideways the kickback naturally helps move the gun horizontally making it easier to clear a room. For LA gangsters holding guns sideways, specifically the Tek-9 or Mac 10 which are automatics, this could be more practical than just "looking cool" in terms of sweeping rounds horizontally across an area. You should test this with a pistol in full-auto!

I was taught that this technique was devised in the 1920's by a Marine Corp Sgt. He was proficient shooter competing in the Camp Perry National Matches. He was losing to others because he was left eye dominant. Once he canted his weapon, he proceeded to consistently win.

I wana know if firing like EVA in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - actually works. Her technique: (right handed) 'sweeping' her pistol across targets from (her) right to left with the horizontal gun position (gangsta) and using the recoil from each previous shot to very quickly line up the next fluently, without ever really halting the pistol's sway from right to left. Hey guys I know this was a tongue in cheek video, but did that style of 'Gangster' sideways shooting start from say the Uzi fully auto where the Verticle recoil was being compensated for by aiming horizontally and allowing an easier unaimed (off the hip) spray? Could you do a video using Uzi and some other short barrelled full auto with vertical climb. Also I always thought shells would get jammed which is obviously not a problem with the hand guns you have used in this video, but may be inherant in certance other weapons??

The "gangster shot" was derived by how "gangsters" would hold the pistol while retreating and trying to shoot behind them. Then they carried it over while standing stationary, bc they'd be more ready in case they had to retreat... they wouldn't have to turn the pistol when they turned and ran, it would already be turned.

Percy Miller Legally armed Officers and also combat veterans have also hit or killed innocent people. You can watch someone as skilled as Hicock 45 miss a few shots. Most of these videos prove that bullets don't always land on target. Real life situations don't unfold as calmly as someone shooting at a stationary target that doesn't move or cross paths with others that may get directly hit or fall victim to a bouncing bullet.

Why shoot sideways? I'm going to tell you why. Gary, IN Citgo gas station in the winter of 2008. I'm pumping gas in the car and a loud blue import w' dark tinted windows goes past too slow, driver's window rolls down. At this point I hear "TING" from the canopy over my head, and "PING" off the pump. and TINK off the trunk lid. I'm looking around like a completely unarmed dumb-ass, and see the driver shooting sideways at me through the partially opened driver's window while making a left hand turn. I hit the deck and the car sped off. I stood up and see a couple of gang-banger looking dudes chillin' inside the gas station. The shooter had not even managed to hit the giant plate glass window they were behind! At the range of 20 yards the spread of his half dozen shots was 15 feet. I paid at the pump but went inside and told the guys that somebody was shooting at them, and just for fun I asked them if they wanted to call the police. I didn't fully comprehend the subsequent conversance, but the gist was, "nope". They shoot gangster style for drive by shootings. Steer with the left hand, shoot cross-handed out of a partially open driver's window. The shooters face can't be seen through the tinted window. Idiots all slid down in their seat, can't steer, aim and shoot out the top of a window while looking through dark tinted windows at night.

In the small town I live in, locals want to play gangster, they actually have no intention of shooting anyone, they want to later brag they were in a gun fight. Outside of a small club, there was a huge shootout in the parking lot. The cops picked up some 72 cases off the pavement, and no one got shot! No cars suffered bullet holes! One important factor not considered here is muscle training. If you've only fired the one way for years, the needed muscles are trained, so naturally, using different muscles to fire another way won't be as accurate because they are not a s disciplined.

Rather, a good way to test this is to have two people with very low gun practice

The most important factor is that they were aiming physically using sights as opposed to holding it offset and aiming with hand eye cordination. This pretty much nullifies the comparison aspect. Imagine old school six shooter hip firing, that's how you're supposed to aim when you're using this "gangsta" method. Which means until you've practiced enough to build proper muscle memory your shots are gonna go all over the place which is extremely dangerous.

As far as I can tell, by holding it sideways you are changing where recoil gets you for the next shot. Instead of going straight up it kind of goes left mostly. So with multiple hostiles it might help to not worry about vertical positioning and horizontal recoil isn't that big of a deal considering you are already trying to shot down one of either. So they probably aim in the general height and direction then spit the bullets while moving around, praying for a lucky hit along the way.
