One of my favorite things to do growing up was to take a long, slender stick (6+ feet long) and sharpen the end a bit and stick a persimmon on there and see who could fling it the furthest. With a good 8+ft long stick, you could send it well beyond the range of being able to reliably find it again lol

Good job cleaning out the brush for the fence, that was a lot of work and doing it on a hot day, whoa. We had cows to go threw our fence so we really didn't have a choice, so I can appreciate what you did there. I have a lot of vines around here too, but luckily I haven't had any issues with the poison oak or ivy, but I try not to get to much on me. Good luck on the rest of the clean up and I hope you have a nice weekend.

You should invest in a metal detector for checking for metal
@ruadhscottygirl2480
@ruadhscottygirl2480 Жыл бұрын
As a metal detecting instructor, I can tell you that that would be a bad idea, at least at this time. First, contrary to what most people think, you can’t just pick up a metal detector and start using it with any type of accuracy. As with all skills, it must be learned and practiced. Second, there is no place to actually SWING a detector in that mess, and detectors take motion to work.

You look like your getting more at ease with the chainsaw and also in felling the trees. I doubt that this may be a good idea for you, but thought I would throw it out anyway. We have sometimes used a somewhat open area in our woods for leftover branches like these. They provide cover for pheasants, rabbits and such and they are out of sight. The branches rot and enrich the soil. We do have a chipper, but it is hot work to use and does take a lot of time. Anyway take care and hope the weather improves.

Juglones are the chemicals in walnut trees that suppress other plants (i think)
@51rwyatt
@51rwyatt Жыл бұрын
I have a big black walnut on my front lawn. They say they produce juglone which retards other plants. In my experience it is not so simple. The grass under the walnut is the best in the yard. But we still have perennials that like it there. I say with walnuts, plant the tree and experiment.
@NancyBryantIdeas
@NancyBryantIdeas Жыл бұрын
Wait another 20 years and you will have no grass unless you put straw and grass seed on it every fall. My folks had English walnuts and no grass and the husks did not fall off of the nuts either. But then I am in central Washington and everything has to have irrigation or it dies.
@51rwyatt
@51rwyatt Жыл бұрын
@@NancyBryantIdeas I think where I live (Maine) we get so much rainfall / snow that it's possible the juglone/natural herbicide is diluted. I have a black walnut; not sure also if there are differences among the walnut types in terms of the herbicide effect. The tree is about 20 years old, maybe 25.
@NancyBryantIdeas

@@51rwyatt English walnuts produce the same juglone. It also affects animals if they eat the leaves and nuts.

I do things a bit differently than you. Not saying that there is a "right or wrong" way. I typically use my backhoe to take down trees so that I get the stump and everything out. The "good" firewood trees I save to make firewood (oak or hickory). Most of the others I just burn (pine, maple, sweet gum).
