Roger: This is an excellent video. I will show it to my Teka stainless steel sink installers here in Buriram Thailand. They normally are cutting into Granite kitchen counter tops, but the tip you provide on using masking tape to make the cut line more obvious is much appreciated. THANK YOU for posting this video.

I find using a circular saw and "plunge" cutting keeps the edges straighter. It also helps where you have to cut a worktop in situ and the cut-out crosses the line of a base unit as long as you set the depth very carefully (a jigsaw will, of course, cut into the side of the base unit and the jigsaw can jump and/or bend/break the blade). Of course you still need to finish to the corner holes with a jigsaw, but it as the circular saw cut provides a good guide-line, it virtually eliminates that blade-wander that happens on thick laminate tops. Another tip is that before you make that final cut-through at the corners with a jigsaw, support the cut-out piece where you can by g-clamping a length of wood across the cut piece. It works best with circular saws with the smaller diameter blades that you find on typical cordless circular saws. It's absolutely essential to run tape along the line of the cuts. Not just to see the cut-line, but to minimise any laminate chipping. Any tiny amount that results is hidden by the sink overlap. nb. the circular saw is a lot quicker too.

I agree, and I use the same method, but I've had the saw bite a few times, and it got a bit dangerous.

Thanks, great to see how it's done. Esp about sealing it after. That step was skipped on 2 of my properties and thats the reason today both sinks need replacing (with larger sinks) due to the counter rotting.

Brilliant thank you. I am getting my very first own sink and worktop and I need to make sure I send off the correct measurements for the cut outs and I never knew why the drainer part of sink needs to be also cut out (I thought it’s flat from the bottom and just rests on the worktop)

Yea.. turn the sink upside down and draw round it, cut it out, fit your sink and watch your sink fall through the hole... oh you mean draw round it and mark 10mm in from that and draw round. Not well explained, but obvious from video

You are right. I could have done better with the explanation. Hopefully, people doing this job will watch the video to the end and maybe (as I do) watch more than one video on the subject.

Good straightforward video, very helpful thankyou. As others have said, perhaps the 1cm inset when using the sink rather than the template could be emphasised, but I got the message!

I use my track saw to do most of the straight cuts and finish the corners with the jigsaw. Not essential but you do get way better cuts and they are quicker to seal.

Yes I also use the tracksaw. Much better, nice plumb cut.

How many mm do you measure after you trace the sink for cutting line?

Circular saw is quicker and far more accurate. No random going off track with circular saw and are careful. Jigsaws can go off even when your careful and stick to your line. You often get an angle even when you are careful even if you are dead on your line and think you've made a good cut. Your cut which you think is on track may be at a 5-10° angle. Also the cut with a circular is cleaner and doesn't seem to chip as much as a jigsaw. Jigsaw is great for thin pieces of timbre but not worktops
