When i built my 66' I made an aluminum bulkhead behind the rear seat to prevent fuel entering the passenger area. This is a good idea too. I never thought of damaging the top of the tank. Even tho my tank is only a few years old now I think I will end up installing a racing type fuel cell. I never liked how the OE tank was in early mustangs.

Yes, it also reduces road noise coming from the rear of the car.

I have an old rusty tank hasn't had gas in it in years I'm going cut it and use the top over the new one lil paint be alright thanks for the idea.......

Make sure you water the inside of the tank before cutting it.

Another thing Mustang owners do is install a piece of sheet steel behind the rear seat backrest sealing the passenger compartment from the trunk and fuel tank. This piece seems overpriced. I've seen entire reproduction fuel tanks for less money. This is simply one stamping. It is a good idea though...

I'm concerned about the metal plate rubbing on the metal. For driving and use, I would use this for additional protection, but I would like to remove it for shows to show it's stock. I anticipate this product will scrape the paint in the trunk. Do you have a gasket of sorts to prevent the metal/metal contact?

The Mustang was NOT the only Ford product that had the Drop in tank!,Also Cougar,Fairlane,Comet and Montego!,20/20 Did a story on it back in the late 70s,Lots of people Burned real bad or died in these cars! Definately not one of Fords better ideas!

Chris, what do you think of the steel plate that's offered as a replacement for the cardboard divider that separates the back seat from the trunk area? Do you recommend that product, too?

if I installed this, shouldn't I upgrade the fuel filler hose as well

You may want to. Make sure the hose is not dry rotted & cracked.

One has to be VERY carfull when mig welding inside the trunk so the torch doesnt arc on the top of the tank...it can happen very easily....best to remove it.

I try not to think of people as being dumb, just unaware & making a mistake. It's more then puncturing the tank, it's the clean up after and the possibility of a spark from a sharp object. There are a lot of people that don't wear helmet's to ride a motorcycle, that's a choice and if they don't, then THAT would be dumb.
