I learned to stay away from aftermarket doors, and hoods for the reasons you demonstrated in this video. Nothing fits as good as OEM or NOS, of course you pay more for them but there is less time in labor. Thanks for the information, please keep making them............

I agree. OEM is the way to go, but it's hard to find ones in great shape.

It might be a good idea to take some sand bags that are the same weight as the parts that will be added to the door when finished and set them on or in the door to simulate the weight and then adjust the hinges.

Quick question , new aftermarket panels are pretty wavy , so I will need to filler skim coat the whole panel to block it straight , there is a edp coating on them , do you 80 that down for filler ? Many people say to leave it on and that's fine if the panel is ready for paint . The dies must be different for new car panels because they are not wavy like these.
@JoDaddysGarage10 жыл бұрын
MrFireman164 The dies for new cars are "trued" continuously. The dies for aftermarket panels are hardly ever corrected. I would scuff the wavy areas or whole panel if I planned to skim coat. Filler will bond to edp, but it's better to scratch it up for an even better bond. No need to remove it.

Have you had issues with the door falling out of adjustment because of oblonging the mounting holes?

No.

@jo daddy’s garage just out of curiosity how much did this restoration cost the client?

did you use a new shell? or reuse the old door? i don't feel like trying to fix my existing doors, so I'm going to replace with a new shell, wondering who makes the better shell. or where to order from.

i dug around and can't seem to find it.. didn't you have a video where you had to adjust the plate inside the door for adjustment. my passenger side needs to rotate the top outward more to line up right and I'm out of adjustment. i can see how much play i have on the hinge to try to file the holes a little, but im thinking i'll have to break those spot welds and move the plate over some.

Bear, when you put your rear quarters on, did you paint the outer wheel house after primer, before you installed the quarter? If so, did you just use some spray can paint, or did you mix and spray paint? I notice here behind the door hinges you have a blue, is that just from a spray can? Thanks, Gilbert
@JoDaddysGarage10 жыл бұрын
Hey Gilbert, thanks for the comment and question. The wheel houses were sprayed with SEM self etching primer for any spot welded areas. I also used some weld thru primer at the spot welds from quarter to wheel house. I didn't use any top coat as it will all be under coated below, and top coated with the original color above (as seen in the trunk). The blue under the hinges was just from a can. Not really necessary as it's all going to be jammed and painted. I will not be removing the hinges though. They are where they are.

I can not believe the problems you had with everything fitting correctly, right down to door hinges. So far i have done a test fit on my quarters and they are lining up correctly. I do not think I would be able to make all the adjustments you have had to do. On my wheel house i used some ospho to kill some surface rust so I was wondering if I should put some kind of spray can primer on it or just wait and spray the epoxy primer at a later date when I have enough to mix up. Any thoughts?

Sorry to keep bothering you, but had another question.(just want to do it right) when you put your quarter on you leave the window in. So, how do you spot weld the bottom flange to the rocker panel if the window is in the way?
@JoDaddysGarage10 жыл бұрын
You can do it if the window is rolled up. Most of it anyway. Make sure you put some cardboard over the glass in case of weld spatter.
@JoDaddysGarage10 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't hurt to put some primer on. Depending on how exposed it is. I've even used rustoleum as a top coat knowing other paint or primer wouldn't reach it later.
@joedirt70918 жыл бұрын
And you think it wouldnt be easier to cut a eighth inch a out of the backing backing plates put them back in and test fit the doors.
@JoDaddysGarage8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Dirt If there was anymore room for the boltholes to move aft that may work. The bolts were hitting the openings in the A-pillar, so trimming the plate wouldn't help much without enlarging the holes in the A-pillar as well. There's always more than one way to do a job. I just showed what I chose to do in this case.

Thats fine with me. I wish you wouldnt have scrapped the wrecked gold mustang coupe. I would purchased that car from you and i would have completely rebuilt that back drivable condition.
@JoDaddysGarage8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Dirt It was far worse than it looked. Trust me, I don't like to see any of them go to scrap.
