I found this video to be as real as it gets. Real struggle! Not candy coated where everything fits, goes in or comes off on the first attempt. It took some doing and the mechanic definitly earned his money. Thanks for showing like it really is.

Except it was done woefully wrong. Its not how its really done. A decent mechanic would either replace the whole axle or remove, strip and inspect it/repack it with grease. This was painful to watch and a good example of what not to do.

So, I just successfully did this over the weekend. I have a few tips to anyone trying it. First, put a ton of oil on the cone--I had a half qt of some motor oil. I used a foam sponge and liberally! coated the cone. Then, coat the outside of the new rubber boot. Put the small end of the boot over the cone and pull the big end over, reversing the boot. The video shows this. This put the oily side of the boot on the inside. Then, use a heat gun on a lowish setting and CAREFULLY heat up the new boot, the oil and the cone. After its pretty warm, not hot enough to melt the boot or the cone, pull the boot down as far as you can a few times before you hold the cone up to the axle end. I think this works the oil into the boot. Put a little more oil around the very end of the cone (that's where the tightest area will be when the small end of the boot goes over the cone). Then, hold your cone up to the axle end. Give one big huge shove. My boot literally went up and over the plastic cone and onto the axle with a pop. I was pretty amazed. I think using a ton of oil and some heat is the key. Then, of course, clean off any oil that you can so the boot isn't all oily. I used a rag and some Dawn detergent--I didn't want to use brake parts cleaner on the rubber. Good luck!

Not sure what type of vehicle/axle this is, but I've replaced CV boots and axles on many different vehicles. In most cases, removal of the CV joint from the axle only requires snap ring pliers. Removal of the entire axle can be difficult on some vehicles, but on many it's as simple as prying the axle out or using a puller (rent for free at most big box auto parts stores).

Good video but from experience it easier just to tap off the CV with a hammer and put the new boot on without stretching it. Usually there is just a small circlip on the driveshaft to overcome. Alternatively on some cars with a hub bolt, just screw it back in to pop the CV.

Excellent video, just one comment, this was made more difficult by allowing the new boot to go inside out on the cone. Grease the cone and push the boot onto the cone keeping it the right way around. Push the boot almost to the end of the cone before offering up to the drive shaft. The use of the plastic bottle is a fantastic idea if the cone is smaller than they’ve joint. Once in place push the boot off the end of the cone, the smaller end will snap onto the shaft and the boot will be the right way around and clean on the outside. Always made sure the joint is clean and re grease before fitting the boot and clamps.

This video is well filmed and helpful BUT the axle ball joint should have been thoroughly cleaned (rugs and brake cleaner ) before repacking with grease and also you should have put some grease on the shaft splines before inserting it to the hub .I hope you degreased your rotor too ! Just some advice on good practices . (As far as the title goes this tool and procedure is cheap and doable , not easy.)

Just doing this, using the 'cone method'(should be the cone of shame method) Had to remove the 'drift' shaft(drive shaft/Axle shaft) on my Seicento as I just couldn't get the leverage(I am weak, yes I know) so took it to my flat, put the kettle on, had brew and put the new rubber gaiter into some very hot water for a 'wee while'. Lubed up the cone and, after fu@#ing around for about 5 minutes on it popped. I tried this before on the car but the narrow end of the gaiter split!! (Don't ask) so hot water did help in my opinion and also using my thumbs pressed into the upturned end of the wide end of the gaiter... It isn't the easiest of jobs, more fiddly than technical... especially without a few tools(and maybe a vice to hold the shaft) but I am almost there...First things first, another cup of tea.....

Isn't the end only held on with a circlip, easier to remove than use that cone

Yes lightly pull the cv joint to you and with a neoprene hammer a couple good whacks towards you in the cv joint and it pops off. Putting it back on is just lining up the splines and a good push it snaps back on

Circlip must easier so is popping out the drive shaft. Could have done five to the way this is done.

A moderately strong 💪& determined man(or gal ?!) is required. Its questionable if its worth the aggravation since the entire axle itself usually isn't too expensive, although more than just a boot kit. & you'd ONLY opt for this if you're 100% sure the tear is new & there is NO wear to the joint. The grease really should be replaced anyway. Whereas pretty much anyone with the tools & knowledge can replace the entire axle. I've only ever tried this like 3 times & trust me, the vid makes it look easier than it is, or was for me anyway, though they are all a little bit different. Good vid though.
