Billie Holliday recorded this song in 1939! She wrote after seeing a man swinging in The trees, during a bus tour when they weren’t even allowed to use bathrooms, hotels or stay in the places they performed in. Trump and his cronies want to make America great again? Fuck em. We want a better world.

j. inksetter please research again Billie Holliday first sang this song in the 30/40s. So how could it been written in the 60s. Perhaps another similar song but since I’m a 60s lady born in 1945, I’d think I’d recall it since I was very politically involved then,

There is something about her!! She is so odd in a powerfully good way. I can't get enough of the way she speaks/ acts/ sings. It's entertaining beyond a way I can put into words. When she stands up after the performance and looks into the crowd. It's almost as if she see's every one in it. Old/ young. Good/ Evil - She hopes they got the message - doesn't really care if they were entertained. Because you can't care about every body with their unique lives and thoughts , trials and tribulations. You care for your own and spread a good message of strength and love - THAT is how you are going to make the world a better place - as a individual living in it.

I can't watch her without feeling the highest form of love and a such deep sadness. the bit when she goes from talking about stuff she was really thinking about to snapping herself back into performer mode, back into songstress and genius musician. I don't think anyone has ever been more honest in the way they carry themselves on stage and I think it was due to pain and exhaustion she felt. I wish she could have lived in a world free of racism and bullshit inequality. one of the greatest beloveds in my life to date.

"So they dont have a place to hide behind all those strange hats... So I'm gonna leave you with the blues." Wooo jeeez that's SUCH a strong way to end that. The way she looks at the audience too. Legend ❤

Good Observation. Indeed, it is an old friend to her. She first climbed up on the piano bench at 3 yrs old. And played songs by ear. Before long, she began playing the piano at her mother's church. Check out her Autobiograhy: "I Got A Spell On You" (1991)

Classically trained pianist. They wouldn't allow blacks to perform in the classical music genre.

this song really is timeless it meant so much back then but also it means so much now it can be redefined in so many different ways. i was just thinking how 'the blues' are slang for fentanyl now a days and the backlash could be the response to that. either way the track is awesome all alone. nina was truly a gift from the lofty heavens.
