One thing I learned doing chart tests with lenses is that many lenses have a curved focus plane. So blurriness on the edges often isn't nearly as noticeable when shooting an actual scene. it's not a bad test, but it might not tell the whole story.

the focus breathing on the Cooke is shockingly bad for its value imo

Great lenses on both sides. For myself, I would like the Cooke SP3's because of the warmer tones as well as the smaller, more compact sizes of the set. Of course, I'd be happy with either brand.

I certainly think the cp3s are better for smaller gimbal focused work or solo operators, and have great character out of the box, but for the price, the extra size and speed of the NPs are perfect for anything that will have a first AC on the crew. Additionally I think the NPs do have the versatility to be sharp for more commercial client work, and then make use of filters and such to degrade the image for more ‘artistic’ projects. So I think it comes down to what style of cinematography you employ, do you want a blank canvas lens that can be modified through pro mists and such, or the specific flavor of the Cooke coupled with the smaller form factor? For my money I definitely intend to compare them each with the Athena set from NiSi, as those serve as a perfect middle ground: t1.9, light weight for gimbal work, with a sharp, modifiable image, and the full set costs only a little more than a single lens form the CP3 or NP set. From looking at test footage the only downside to the Athenas seems to be a little less pleasing bokeh, but I’d have to test that myself to see if the difference is significant enough to warrant the extra money for the Cooke or Zeiss sets. (Also old fast glass here in the states has actually made an adapter that turns the Cooke 24mm into an 18.5mm and they keep selling out from the high demand for it!)

I like the fact that the CP.3's have a depth of field table, whereas the Nano Primes do not. T1.5 is nice though.

It's obvious from the short tests here that both these range of more compact/affordable lenses have a few noticeable compromises in several areas, e.g. chromatic aberrations (lateral type at least because the existence of longitudinal type isn't clearly demonstrated in this video), bokeh rendering and defects (onion rings, blotches, outlining chromatic aberrations etc.) and lastly focus breathing, which for some lenses I find it to be quite outrageous. Not much different from that of a lot of consumer still photography lenses costing far less. It should be clear by now why those mega-$ cinema lenses that cover either fullframe or Super-35 image circle cost and weigh so much more.

I'd really want to see a comparison of those new cine lenses against some 'photographic' ones like Sigma ART line. I think it would easily become a very controversial (and useful) video.

Yes, that would be interesting. Panasonic has a whole line of 1.8 primes that are the same size as Cooke, but with brighter aperture, breathing compensation and autofocus for $500-1000 a lens. Though electronic focus ring is worse for manual focusing.
@ljubomirbardzic
@ljubomirbardzic 5 ай бұрын
I would be interested in seeing SP3s compared to Zeiss Loxia lenses as they are much closer in size. And even though they are primarily photography lenses, they are manual focus and come in at a much lower price. You can almost get a full set for the price of one SP3.

I agree to a point, especially with the Cookes - the “Cooke look” was a bit soft with fairly low contrast and the SP3’s are fairly sharp and contrasty, and you lose the speed of the more expensive ones. So, yes, they seem like a marketing ploy to me.

I could not be further away from being impressed as it certainly is not a kind of performance one would expect to see from a cinema-grade optics. There’s a number of lenses designed with DSLR cameras in mind that, in my opinion, deliver superior image quality at an affordable price (for instance Sigma Art 40/1.4, which combines cinema-grade optics with a variety of consumer grade technologies such as AF). Would be interesting to see a comparison of top-class DSLR lenses (Tamron 35/1.4, Sigma Art 40/1.4, Sigma Art 105/1.4, Nikon 105/1.4 E ED, Samyang 135/2 ED UMC, Nikon 200/2, etc.) and cinema-grade glass (Canon, Cooke, Zeiss, etc.).

No, he has a point. Obviously they're not as bad as a kit zoom. But for the price these lenses are really not that impressive, especially the Zeiss. It seems like cooke definitely put more work into their lenses, but this really just feels like zeiss trying out a new market segment without putting any real effort in. They know their brand name will help sell these lenses. Depending on the characteristics you want, you can get similar or even better looking lenses at the $1,000 price mark. The extra costs here doesn't pay for better image quality, it's paying for a slight increase in consistency across multiple lens sets. Which for the kind of productions I would expect to see these on, doesn't really matter all that much.
