You're a braver man me, I would have ditched the heat gun after 1 minute especialy on a plastic bumper. if that had bubbled the paint or distorted the plastic it would have been so much more grief trying to rectify it. I don't think anyone should take that risk particularly when the alternative is not that tricky and almost risk free.

Perfect! So many DIY‘ers are horrified at the thought of sanding the ‘shine’ off the paint finish without realising all you’ve done is taken off a micro layer of clear coat which will then take a nice polish back to gloss again. Thanks for the video!

I have personally had success with a paint gun (headgun) on a black car without any extra coating. What I did was first heat up the panel (just like you do in the video). Once the panel was properly warmed up, I gently went over the bird droppings with a hand pad and some medium polishing compound. After a few passes, the stain was completely gone. I didn't vigorously rub, I carefully worked the polishing compound in and wiped it off.

when the bird-muck is left on the paint for 2 or 3 days, the morning dew will re-hydrate it and soak into the the paint even more. this commonly happens when the car is new, as the paint is still soft, and takes a full 9months to reach maximum hardness, as the solvents in the paint dissipate into the atmosphere. and also darker colours get much hotter than lighter colours. i have seen many bird-mucks eat through to the bare-metal on new cars. and it is mainly for 2months of the year, when the berries are in season. thanks for the great video 👍.

Excellent video! This is the 3rd video on this subject I've watched. The 1st one was of another Englishman who was working in a similar environment. He started by saying he used 2 different methods of removing the mark. First used a heat gun and the mark disappeared right in front of my eyes in what appeared to be a couple of minutes. Very impressive. He then moved onto another area on the same car and did the wet sand and buff method. I followed that up with your video on how you remove the marks with the wet sand and buffing to follow up with this video. Very impressed that you gave the heat gun a go with no result then on with the wet sand and buff. That is certainly a far superior way to do it and I know that is how I will be removing these marks. On to your next video!

Btw...no need to wet sand. I removed one that was burned in my fathers hood for 2 years. I was able to remove it easy with medium cut pad and Monello Veloce compound. It's like the Menzerna 400 compound. Then with finishing pad en Monello Finale(like Menzerna 3800) finishing polish. All gone with a nice smooth and scratch free paint. After that I protected the paint with Soft 99 Fusso Coat.

Having successfully removed a bird muck stain on my own car with a heat gun, I was talking to my neighbour about it and he asked me to try on his car. I got four stains off his bonnet, one quite deep. All done outside his house on a moderately warm dry day. Had the gun set on medium heat and kept it moving to avoid overheating the paint. I would guess that if a stain can be polished out - i.e, is still within the body of the clear coat and not burned through - it can be removed with a heat gun.

Ur just baking it on, by using a heat gun. It needs to be softened first. That's what I do with mine, by using a proprietary cleaner in a spray bottle. Then simply wipe off...
@cvrpov
@cvrpov Ай бұрын

@AndySmith4501
@AndySmith4501 Ай бұрын
You did it wrong. The trick is to use a medium heat over the affected area for about 15 seconds, stop and wipe for 10 seconds, then repeat the process 3 or 4 times. You are basically creating a chemical reaction whereby the clear coat expands and contracts, eventually swallowing up the etching. Doing it by holding the heat over the area expecting it to just vanish isn't how it works
@paulwatts1704

Yikes - I wonder how many people burn the paint off - esp if they are using a DIY heat gun! I took the plunge and used the wet sanding approach before a polish - it works a treat so long as you follow your instructions carefully.

You're a good man. So I parked my new deep blue Tesla at work, and a tree dropped dozens of these blue berry type things all over it. Cleaned off after a day or so, went on holiday for a month, came back and during its next wash realised its etched everywhere! I'm a bit nervous about hitting it with sandpaper though... I'm guessing just cut and polish with a DA isn't enough for these issues though? Thanks, and g'day from Australia 🦘

I happened on you channel and videos by chance - it was the red Ferrari stone chip repair that popped up and piqued my interest. Very well done! What I have is a 2011 BMW X3 with a black metallic paintjob with naturally a clear coat - and it has severe bird dropping damage. It almost looks like an area about the size of "half an egg" which is filled with stone chips, i.e. the damage is all the way down to the base colour. I was hoping to find something similar to that on your channel, but nothing other than the Ferrari damage comes close. I am going to attempt a repair using the "Ferrari method" sometime this spring - unless you have a better option and suggestion. I cannot afford a repaint - not even a partial one - so I need to do what I can as a DIY. I will most likely not be able to get a 2K clear, unless I can find a rattle can of the stuff on the cheap. Just a tiny one and either mask and spray directly on the car and deal with runs as I need a quite a lot on there to build it up - or use the squeege approach and hope I can get two or three applications out of the can spraying it on a car or similar - and do it all before the hardener makes the 2K unworkable.

Awesome channel thanks.. apparently it's about getting clear coat to basically melt and reflow..What temperature did it get too ?? Didn't work at least with my hair dryer.. has for other people.. it clearly works for many people... a mystery why ?? ... Maybe as you mentioned because the paint was in trouble condition and dry to start with and who knows how long the bird poop day has been there. It would be interesting to know why didn't work for you because obviously you got it hot enough lol.. my method.I cleaned first with IPA ..for me got the surface to 83°C at least four times.. hair dryer temp is probably not enough but it does work for other people in other videos..why oh why ?? .. interesting ..I heated then let it cool & repeated 4 times..2020 Tesla model 3 Ocean Blu Pearl .. I believe heating up n letting it cool several times is the preferred method ? which I did... so it would have been helpful if you had measured the surface temp while you were doing the job so we can see what the temperatures get up too... So what is the safe maximum temperature the panels clear coat ?

It does work it’s just you haven’t a clue what you’re doing plus it doesn’t work on plastic that well! I’ve done it with great success without issue!
