Making a switch of career into smart repairs soon after 15 years of painting and decorating. This video was exactly what i was looking for to give me some info. Did a panel beating apprenticeship 25 years ago but will take a while to get back in the swing of it. Back in the 1980s I was Going round various garages up here in Scotland doing what's now called Smart repairs. As far as I know I was the only person to offer this service in Scotland as no one had heard of this paint service on a mobile basis before and as I was a time served spray painter to trade I could do most jobs including small dents, but not all of them, All the garages liked what I was offering as it was mainly to the sales side of the industry but I could also do some private work as well. I packed the business after quite a few years mainly because of the never ending Health and safety rules and regs as I was always given a space in the workshop to work on the cars. also because I was burning myself out with driving 100s of miles per week and could not keep up with demand [ that was before mobile phones so that would have been a nightmare]. It was a nice earning business if you knew what you were doing but I have heard of people being attracted to the job on a franchise basis that have no knowledge of the painting industry and receive a few months training and then sent out to make a living so I imagine there will be a lot of failures unless the repairs are kept really simple and not on the main areas of the car panels.

That was probably quite revolutionary in those times. Mobile paint repair is now very much common place within the industry now.

Scratch had to be sprayed no fault there. I like how you take the time to polish back the surrounding area before repairing and spraying, a somewhat unnecessary step but it shows you care a lot. Yeah, can see you know what your doing, fine somewhere that will appreciate those skills to keep you off the side of the roads~

thanks for watching. the polishing prior to scotching can help decontaminate and also buff any deepish marks and reveal the true damage. not always necessary i agree! I will maybe get a unit one day but im mobile and thats my biggest selling point people love the convenience

Is any overspray that might stick to the non-base coat painting area be easy to remove ? Does folding the tape to apply around the surrounding area effective to minimize paint tape lines on the finished area?

I'm supposed to take my Jeep Jl back to my dealer soon to have rock chips on my rear fenders and doors touched up by a mobile painter. The thing is she is only available on Thursday's and the temperature outside has been around 50ish degrees and under and their has been humidity in the 70s and up on every Thursday this far. Are mobile painter able to paint well in these conditions? I'm worried that if I take it to get painted in these conditions that the finish product won't turn out well. Any input from a professional would be awesome. Thank you for your time and assistance.

I paint in all sorts of conditions. However in the uk they are not that extreme.

You seemed to polish the clear coat very soon after spraying it. Doesn’t it take about 24-48 hours for clear coat to fully harden to the point where it will polish without damaging it?

Most modern lacquers dry in a few hours now in the right conditions. This one dried in 15 mins under infra red

Hi, grsat work. I have the bottom of a door to clearcoat up to a swageline/Bendline in the panel. Do i not need to run a little blend spray along the swageline if i do it like this? Or do i just polish cut the new and old clear coat together? Thanks

I think all of these people don't know much about the real procedure, how to prep, paint, and where to fade out the lacquer according to manufacturer specifications. That's why they are cheering so much at your job. Anyway, for a quick repair on the street, it looks good, as long the customer was happy, it doesn't matter what and how much you actually skipped on this job.

I usually do 1 coat over the base area then a full coat over the whole area.

Glad the vids are helping mate. I actually have an opinion on this but I may be wrong. Personally I don't use any blender on the 'line' when I backmask it with tape. I've tried some of that special foam edge tape and I think personally that does benefit from some dusting over it. Always keep base away from the line as much as possible and remove the tape immediately after clearing 👍🏻

Use backmasking technique by rolling it back..remove immediately after lacquer and polish area when dry

@@robw321 Basic equipment: minimum of two guns for base and clear coat, a compressor, baking lamps, a machine polisher, a generator (if you don't always want to need the customer's socket), masking paper, masking sheets, auto cleaning towels, dual action sanders and sanding papers, body fillers. There are certainly other things but these I consider the minimum set of equipment.

@@alexbryant333 Hi, having a good gun will save you loads of time with sanding back the clear coat. If you use a good gun (say Devibiss GTI Pro of full fluid and full fan, 2 bar) and you know how to handle your gun and spray around body lines, you will have far less orange peel to cut when you are done painting.

Do you use a waxless polish? Also I see that you are using a pneumatic sander, do you use this for polishing too? If so what RPM? Because I hear that people have been burning paint with too high of a RPM...

Always use a bodyshop safe polish. I use air sanders and polishers (them pistol ones), not sure what rpm but it takes alot to burn the paint with one

Ok so what happens if the entire car is covered in ceramic coating. How would you smart repair without destroying the ceramic?

Simple answer is the ceramic will need removing from any panel where paint is being applied. Ceramic needs a minimum of 2000 grit wet paper to thoroughly sand the whole panel which requires painting.. or area that needs painting (if a smart repair on a bumper etc). . The refinished panel should be left for several wheels before re application of a ceramic coating

Hi. Yes I would consider painting the filler cap on a more difficult colour! Every scheme has its pros and cons, mine is no different! I do sometimes use 3000 after yes. The more sanding stages the better the finish definitely!

Alot of overspray when clearcoating.. drop the pressure and adjust the gun. That way the overspray dont hit the car

Don't try this at home cos you will spend the rest of the day trying to remove the overspray from the rest of the car. Tip, buy a roll of plastic sheet and cover the whole car,will take about 4 minutes and cost about £2.
