Had been experiencing surging under light acceleration until the engine warmed up. Learned of the Toyota JSD campaign for the CVT problem. Dealer (Peruzzi Toyota) said that they could not update it because there is a "mechanical problem with the transmission that I created" (total nonsense). Much worse since I got it back from the dealer.
Had someone video while I held the throttle steady going up a slight (4-6%) grade. Would love some input from others who've had similar experiences. 85K miles and have owned it since new. Car will suddenly and unpredictably rev to the red line regardless of engine/ambient temperature or road speed.
Even after appealing this situation to Toyota USA, they would do nothing. I ended up replacing the transmission with one from a 12K mile total at my own expense.

I brought my 2019 Corolla to the dealer with 32k miles complaining of the exact issue seen here. The dealer couldn't find anything wrong. I brought it back at 35k miles and again the dealer found nothing wrong. At 37k miles, the transmission completely failed. toyota USA has refused to take any responsibility for the failure. I'll be seeing them in court very soon!

@@AeroAngle Our state attorney's general got involved since there were several others with the same complaint and toyota refused to make any repairs or adjustments. Verdict- toyota must pay to have the transmissions replaced, a loaner while under repair and a 100k mile additional warranty or they can buy back the car or provide a new car, free of charge! I opted for the value of the car, practically as much as I paid for it when new...... Toyota should not resell the car to anyone, for any reason. It must be destroyed..... toyota...... the name goes on before any quality or responsibility goes in!!!!!!!!

@@amerigovespucci4076 Do you remember the first thing you noticed was wrong? Did it get gradually worse or did it just starting happening all of a sudden? I test drove one today and under light acceleration at 100km/h it was making a faint but weird noise. The dealer is having his mechanic check it and I'm going to test drive it again over the weekend. But after reading your comment it sounds like it could be the start of the problem you described.

@@amerigovespucci4076 I know this is a long shot, but is there a link that you have to your attorney general's case? 2016 Toyota Corolla Sport. Just recently once it hit 85k miles started to have this whining, rattling noise. At first we thought that it was a wheel bearing issue, but took it into the dealership and they're saying it's the transmission chain, and the whole transmission needs replaced now. I checked the VIN and it had 0 outstanding recalls, we got the firmware updated, and now it's apparently going out. My thought is if we have to, we can use your case as precedent that this is a known issue, and they might be more likely to help us out considering that our vehicle is most likely out of warranty.

My ‘15 corolla recently started getting 24 mpg on average no matter how slow I drive and I noticed a recent change in how the transmission reacts. @James Turnure I have exactly the same issue as you have described, my 2014 corolla is at 87k. Started out with light ramping up of rpm when enigne warmed up but than everythign okay after first few mins. Received a letter regarding the JSD campaign for CVT issues and went to a nearby dealer. The dealer kept the car first day and told me that the tranmission was damaged and they were waiting from Toyota technicians to confim and give them a green light to go forward with replacing the transmission covered under the JSD campaign. But after 5 days in all, the dealership came back with that transmission issue is unrelated to the update and doesn't fall under the JSD requirements. And now the issue is much more worse, similar to the one you showed in the video, trying to get it resolved by opening a case in toyota cutomer service center, but not getting any satisfactory response. I am also going to file a complain against Toyota ans the dealership, along with reporting the incident to NHTSA

Parth, I am so sorry that you are experiencing this same issue. I genuinely believe that the problem is in the valve body and more specifically in the solenoids that control pressure to move the CVT belt. What I can tell you is that Toyota won't budge and the dealer certainly won't either. This failure appears to be rather unusual, so their are tons of replacement almost new transmissions out of wrecked cars for about $500. If you choose to have a shop put it in, it'll be about $1,000...but that sure beats the $7,000 that Toyota wants to extort to change it out. Best of luck and please post when you decide what to do.

I will underscore that a Toyota CVT failure is a very rare occurrence and therefore I cannot agree that buying a used one is a bad idea. As I mentioned in another response, there are plenty of low mile Toyota CVT's available on the market for nearly nothing (I paid $500 for one with 18K on it). If you choose to have it installed, figure you'll have $1,500 in the whole job; done and forget it because it'll likely go another 300,000 miles. My rage over the matter is toward Toyota for the way that they handled the matter. They gave me the total blow-off and I've been very loyal to the brand.

@@FredFlintstone21 Indeed, I have had no issues that I'm aware of with the Variable Valve Lift Actuator. As for the transmission, I now have 50,000+ miles on the replacement (salvage unit). While I am now very attentive to changing fluid/filter frequently, I do not believe that the failure of the original CVT was caused by mechanical failure but rather a malfunction in the valve body (likely pressure apply solenoid). At the time, I was commuting 50 miles/day in heavy city traffic and didn't have time or place to pull it apart or replace only the valve body...and therefore opted to simply swap the unit. Dealership wants $9k probably will take toyota to small claims, really bad design don’t buy these cvt cars. Gonna try to get a special scanner or a shop to help with more evidence. Will never buy from toyota again

Cl0wn My 2016 CVT Toyota Corolla has 173000 miles and no issues at all with my CVT . Have your transmission fluid changed every 60000 miles. I am a rideshare driver too. “DNY automotive “channel shows the proper way to change the trans fluid

This may happen for all corollas that have CVT transmission. I bought corolla 2016 with CVT and I faced this problem, after a few days it became unable to drive anymore. And then I bought a corolla 2015 with auto transmission (but it is not CVT, it comes with 4 gears) and the car works very well with no issues.

I tried to warn people before it was released its not proven but most people didn't listen. Now pay the consequences 🤑. Even I'm forced to drive manual sometimes (to avoid this nonsense).

@@jamesturnure9735 Hey James, I have the exact same issue in the same Corolla CVT 2015, did you find the fix or solution for this? I went to the mechanic and they told me I would have to replace the whole transmission! What a disaster. Thanks alot

@@robmargarcia6390 So I took the car to the dealer and was told that I did not maintain the transmission properly. When I pointed out that it is a sealed unit with no recommended maintenance interval, they told me that I abused it....absurd. I appealed to Toyota USA and they would do nothing to help. The dealer wanted some $7,000 to replace the transmission...more than the car was worth. I went online to "junkyard finder" and located a list of these low-mile transmissions. I bought it from Carparts, Inc for $545 out of a wreck with 16,000 miles on it. Had a local transmission shop install it for a total cost of about $1,500 all-in.

I wanted to thank you for saving me a ton of money. I changed my spark plugs a few months ago and everything seemed fine so when my car started shifting funny I didn't even think of the spark plugs until I saw your comment. Turns out I got some bogus Denso spark plugs off ebay and they were the culprit. I changed them out with some quality plugs from Rock Auto and now my car is shifting and riding great again. Thanks for taking two seconds of your time bro.

CVT is for only 0-100k miles with good fluid & filter change. If you want go more than 100000miles automatic is the way. Honda Toyota any brand it just hate mileage.
