This is the primary reason why I purchased my 2012 Corolla LE last year instead of the 11th generation Corolla. Mine has the ancient 4 speed automatic instead of the CVT. Tried and true and bullet proof.
@lanfan14646 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is bullet proof, but it is boring. I used to own a car with 4 speeds automatic. That thing was screaming on the highway when going over 60 mph. The CVT feels so much better. I'm getting 34 mpg in city with a little bit of highway driving. It does not feel under powered when the AC is on. It is because CVT shifts to higher engine RMP much quicker. Interior design is nicer as well. I think it is a trade off for both. Toyota CVT should be well made, so I don't worry that much. If it gets to 200,000 miles, I will be happy. By then, everything is rusted and you would want to buy a different car.

I just had mine done this morning at the dealership on 2016 Corolla LE at 60,000 miles. I had scheduled an oil change. However , when I got there my tech said that there was a recall on the transmission and did I want it done. I said yes. I will say it is smoother for sure. And the shift ratios are almost gone. I full throttle my car when merging on I-95 all the time. Before, it felt like I was driving my Honda Accord 5 speed manual because it would change ratios like you pressed a clutch in and came off the gas paddle. Now it works the way a CVT should hold rpms and seamlessly vary speed ratios.
@bobn19556 жыл бұрын
I've got a 2018 (which was produced from the start with the updated software) and if I push the pedal to the floor, (which I do when merging, same as you) I still see several fluctuations of the tachometer, from 6000 down to 5000, then back up to 6000, as the car is accelerating. Is this what you mean by "shift ratios are almost gone"?

I have the same issue with a Corolla 2016 LE in Mexico. I have not received any call or notice from Toyota Mexico, niether Toyota USA. At the begining of september 2018, I contacted Toyota Mexico and Toyota USA about this recall or whatsoever, without any specific solution, however, Toyota USA answered they will discuss with Toyota Japan to determine if the recall could be completed in Mexico. I also contacted the Mexican Office for Consumer Afairs (PROFECO). Yesterday I saw in a local newspaper an accident of a Toyota Yaris related with the old issue of accelerator stuck with floor mats. My curiosity took me to search about this recall and I found the CVT recall issued for the Mexicans authorities, dated on september 11th. So I asked to the local Toyota dealer about this issue and finally the appointment was set. I have not noticed nothing wrong with my car but is difficult to say something because I dont use it to often (700 km the last 6 months). My only concern about is performance is I have not seem the rpm reaching the top 6000 or 5000 rpm flooring the gas. Will see what happend after the revision.

Years ago Be for Toyota started installing CVT transmission in there cars. The first manufacture to come up with and produce CVT and then run test on there CVT transmissions was Nissan. Now before the first nissan CVT went into production nissan they tested them for five years, by driving them around the clock 24 hours a day in city traffic, and up and up and down the steepest hills they could find. After the five years of testing were up they found there were no problems what so ever. with there CVT The reason for this is that ever few months, the cars CVT were taken out then taken apart and examined, And put back to gether and put back in the car threy come out of. they found almost no wear and tear. But the thing is as I said that ever time they examined the CVT they also change the CVT fluid. So they did not see the carbon build up in the CVT fluid. And the damage it was doing So we know now the problem with these CVT is heat that burns the CVT fluid and the build up of carbon in the the CVT fluid. that coms from that The Carbon in the CVT It is a mild abrasive and if it not removed will effects ever thing in the CVT including a small return valve that has been shown is prone to failure. So the main cause of failure in these CVT are cause by a build up of carbon in the the CVT fluid. It been found now that just by changing CVT fluid regularly as some one on here once said Around about every 30-40,000 miles. on any of the CVT The CVT should out last the life of the car, that it was installed in . And It not an hi-tect operation to change it you self But to change the CVT fluid you self easy. with using the high tect tool the car dealers use You got to mach the same amount of CVT fluid that came out of it. to the same amount that going in to it.

My 2017 was just diagnosed with having coolant in cylinder 1. Have to bring it back to the dealer Monday to have the motor completely taken apart and they have to figure out why the coolant is in the cylinder and what damage has been done to the engine. Likely a head gasket blown or cracked block. I am not very happy right now. 11k miles on my car and it has the beginning stages of engine failure and a wonky cvt. As soon as they fix this car I am selling it and buying a different car. This is crazy.
@lanfan14646 жыл бұрын
The engine in the Corolla is bullet proof. It has been used in many older Toyota cars. I think you just got a lemon of it. Since, you bought it for cheap (Yes, that is a very good deal, considered you bought it from the dealership), it could have been abused before. People get rid of their cars for a reason. If you don't check what you buy carefully, you will end up with that. The wonky CVT could be affected by the broken engine. You should wait and see how it drives. You are going to lost a few thousands by changing car. I have no problem with my 2017 Corolla, yet. It is boring, slow and ugly, but I don't mind none of those. I appreciate a good driving car (smooth and good on gas).

Just got the call this morning. They have confirmed it was a blown head gasket. They are replacing the gasket, oil and coolant and nothing else really it appears. Not gonna resurface anything. I feel like a new gasket just doesn’t break. I hope nothing is warped and this doesn’t happen in 10,000 miles again. Anyways they are estimating 10 days to 2 weeks for repair. I received the notification in my mail about a week and a half ago and got the software update to my 2015 Corolla’s CVT this morning. The work took about 4 hours out of originally estimated 4 to 8. Got no loaner though, so there was an Uber ride around my lunch break. The whole thing was at no cost for me at all other then that Uber ride. The manager explained that the fix itself is pretty straightforward in best case scenario. Unless there’s a mechanical damage to the CVT they only need to upload the software. After that he said they were going to ride it for a while and then download some sort of diagnostic data and review it to make sure it runs as expected. Apparently that was my case. To be honest I didn’t expect much change but I have to say I runs so much smoother now. Ever since I purchased this car in 2016 it has this distinct kick when accelerating from fully stop as if it missed the moment to upshift. It was significant enough so I developed a procedure where I would touch the accelerator lightly first to let the engine to rev up a little and then gradually press it further before the car actually starts to accelerate. So I would start from the red light about a second later then others if there’s no one in front of me so I could prepare. That way it was smoother but annoying for sure. With two passengers it would be less smooth still. So with the fix all this is gone completely. You can accelerate whatever you like, no kicks, no lurches. I’m pretty happy with it so far.

I’m currently renting a 2019 Corolla. It had 3,391 miles on it when I got it, now has 4,256. It was great in the close to 1000 miles until today, transmission surges and now hesitates in reverse. Very unfortunate as Toyota is known for their reliability
@lanfan14646 жыл бұрын
It might not be the transmission. If your engine is acting up, you get the same thing. Also, if you have a bad alternator, cruise control on and so on, your car would try to adjust its speed all the time. That adjusting speed doesn't seem smooth so, you might want to take a look at your car. I haven't used the cruise control on my car to tell the difference, but your rpm seemed high. I haven't saw my car went over 3000 rpm, unless I floored it. With CVT, you have to be gentle. Who ever drove it before you might have beaten it up already. That is why I don't like rental cars.

Heard a whirling noise and now they’re telling me “you need a new $10k transmission (parts and labor).” So you can imagine my surprise when I drove my previous car (2012 Scion XB) for 250k with no issues and it’s still on the road. www.toyotachrforum.com/threads/transmission-needed-to-be-replaced.5924/ Hopefully toyota acknowledges the trend ^

This is why I drive since new a 2009 Mazda 3 s hatchback 2.3 with 5 speed auto and 195,000 miles. I have been dumping money lately for suspension parts at all four corners and a trans module. A trans module is not a rebuild. At the end of the last 5000 mile oil change interval I got back from a 2000 mile Marathon trip in 50 hours. Car ran like a champ. Scion iM (2016) had valve module replaced at 29,000 miles. The REPLACEMENT valve failed at 37,000 miles, transmission overheated, and CVT grenades itself. Toyota dealership (different from the original) says valve body replacement wasn't done correctly. Car still under warranty, entire CVT replaced. My friend traded in her Scion, and bought a two-year old low mileage certified Lexus ES. Much happier and the Lexus has been bulletproof.

Toyota pay the mechanics there to do it. Some dealerships have already done that to the cars in their parking lot. Most of them haven't. Only if you mention that to them. So of course started researching and found this..I have only recently noticed acceleration problems when I step on the gas and it doesn't want to go...very hesitant...I just thought time for service (oil change maybe fuel inj cleaner etc...) now I see this...very disheartening considering I'm pretty poor and unfortunately still owe a couple of payments on this car b/c I had to go for 60 mo. Loan to afford it but fugured since it was a Toyota, I would have it for a long time to come!!! It only has 57,000 miles on it but is out of warranty? Anyone else delt with this recently, I want to know what to say when I call them back to add this on to my appointment when they fix the other recall and do service! Thanks in advance!

Have them look at it and see what they find it could be a big issue it might not. Technically the car is out of warranty because it’s over five years old. If it does need a transmission replacement you could bring up that it’s under the mileage warranty and that there was a technical service bulletin for this issue. They are not obligated to help you but they might that’s really the best you could hope for.
