Billy Finlay it's quite debatable whether Avi or Mitch is better, since avi has great tone and support on his upper range while also having relaxed strong lows while Mitch has great manipulation of his tone on his belts, perfect mixing, an incredible falsetto and overall great control. They both have their strengths and some weaknesses such as for Avi, he doesn't have as good control on his upper range and might isn't terribly comfortable anywhere in the second octave

"Imagine" is the best opportunity to hear Kevin sing in Pentatonix; he has the lead in the last stanza, and he also hits the diva notes in the "wall of sound" right before that final stanza. Most of the time, he is busy beatboxing, but a few of their songs don't require a beat box, which frees him up to sing. "Can't Help Falling in Love" is an example of them singing intricate five part harmonies (no beatboxing), and so is their original composition "Run To You". A number of their Christmas songs have Kevin singing a line or two, where he can stop providing the beat for a moment. Kevin's range is interesting, as he can hit incredibly low notes as a beatboxer, and astonishingly high notes as a vocalist. As was noted by SorrowW0lf, there are many examples of Kevin singing on his own channel here on KZbin; his specialty there is looping covers, where he plays cello, piano, and drums, and adds in his own beatboxing and vocals. It's quite impressive. FWIW, his last name is pronounced "oh LOO shoh la". Avi's first name is pronounced "AHH vee", with a broad a. The mezzo soprano is Kirstin Maldonado (Kirstin rhymes with Thurston, not Tristan) and the countertenor is Mitch Grassi, who can belt out some amazingly high notes (he regularly nails a G#5 in a number of their songs). You already know Scott, and after Avi's departure in 2017, Matt Sallee (suh LEE) stepped in as the bass. If you'd like to see some of Matt's bass work with the group, check out the covers of "Attention" or "New Rules x Are You That Somebody". Kirstin shines in "Say Something" and "Rather Be", and "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a Mitch Grassi tour de force. Nice reaction, and would like to see more Pentatonix reactions from you.

Scott, Kirstin (soprano), and Mitch (counter-tenor) all grew up in Texas, and have known each other since they were young teens and before. Avi and Kevin joined them later, so they could compete on a TV talent show called "The Sing-off". They won, (some money and a recording contract). The contract was cancelled soon, so they decided to do KZbin videos, and became so well known through YT, that they were offered another recording contract. They have the best selling Christmas album of all time, and several Grammys, and a HUGE fandom called the Pentaholics.

@@cjgreen8423 No, pambarab knows what she is talking about. Mitch is a Countertenor and you had probably never heard that term used before. So, I shall explain. The CounterTenor is the highest male singing voice range that stretches from E3 to E5. Countertenors usually sing their high notes in falsetto, but Mitch does not! He can make those notes in his natural voice. That is testimony to how good he is. The lower notes for a Countertenor are usually sung in a modal voice. This is precisely what Mitch does for the lower range of his voice.

Yeah, when I first heard them, it seemed like the planets had crossed a certain way to bring them together. Scott, Mitch (tenor) and Kirstie (girl) met as kids of 9 or 10 in Arlington, TX, in local musical theater productions. They performed as a trio in high school and decided to go on a TV a capella competition show called The Sing-Off, but realized they needed more voices. They saw Kevin in a YT video "cello-boxing", and a friend told Scott about Avi. They all met just 2 days before the audition for the show (!) and they ended up winning (!!!) With a lot of hard work, they have built a great playlist of music, both originals and covers, had 2 TV specials, and toured all over the world. A few other videos that show their individual skills and ability to arrange music are "PTX Evolution of Michael Jackson" and "PTX Daft Punk" for which they won their first of 3 Grammys. Also, check out "PTX Can't Sleep Love", a great original song. And if you really want to see Avi and Mitch blow the roof off, check out "PTX - Aha!, Singapore, The Star Vista" (a live performance). Love to see more reactions to those, or any suggested by others.

When you have seen more Pentatonix videos, you'll discover that Mitch has an incredible range. When the group was asked who was the "best" singer among them, the other four all turned and pointed at Mitch. Also, Kevin is a "beatboxer", which has become a standard inclusion in a capella groups. Understand, there are NO instruments recorded in "Hallelujah". Everything you hear that *sounds* like an instrument, drum, etc, is all being done by Kevin, using only his own body. He does also sing, has a beautiful voice, and plays cello as well. I also recommend "Mary Do You Know" to give you another view into the incredible range of Pentatonix. FIVE amazing singers.

their version of the sound of silence is well good that really shows how good they all are, have a listen to that if you haven't done so already.

I'd love to see how he would react to Pentatonix singing Carol of the Bells.

Exquisite. Singer Kevin is not only not given a highlight in the singing, the camera touches him fewer times than any of the others.

Several have mentioned that Kevin Olusola plays cello. He’s a world-class cellist. He’s come in second in competitions, where the musician who came in first was...Yo-Yo Ma. He also speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese. He studied for pre-med at Yale, and tells the story that he had to choose between Pentatonix (on the Sing-Off) or going to medical school. He’s also perfecting “cello boxing”: beatboxing with the cello. Since Matt Sallee joined the group in January 2018, he and Matt have developed a comedy routine, utilizing Matt’s bass and Kevin’s cello boxing. They do that routine in concert-I saw it. It was hilarious. Another leading acapella group is Home Free-they won the Sing-Off in 2014. (Pentatonix won in 2011). Home Free’s rendition of “How Great Thou Art” will make you cry. It showcases Tim Foust, who is a true basso profundo--(he actually had also trained Avi Kaplan as a basso profundo as well). The video was shot in the summer of 2016 when they were on tour in Europe, and was filmed with cameras mounted on drones, to show the sweeping landscapes of the Austrian Alps!)

Good suggestion. Also, the Home Free version of "Ring of Fire" also features Avi Kaplan, and really shows off his bass range. Avi and Tim from Home Free have similar ranges but different sounds, and both are awesome. For whatever reason, Home Free hasn't gained the following of Pentatonix, but they tour constantly and all of them have outstanding voices and harmonies. Last, I echo other comments to listen to "Aha" from the Pentatonix Singapore live concert at the Star Vista because it not only showcases Mitch's incredible singing, but also shows Avi's beautiful low range.

I was fortunate enough to see Pentatonix live last summer. They are just as incredible in person. I think it was Kirsten that said she and Scott heard about the tv show "the sing off." The two of them wanted to audition so badly, but there was only two of them. SO they basically went shopping for singers on KZbin. That's how they came together. Hurray for KZbin!

When Avi is singing his verse, it's actually Scott singing bass then. Just a fun fact

Yep. And Scott did that so perfectly but Avi's voice 😍😍

Also check out some of their individual projects, Superfruit (Scott and Mitch, plus Kirstie on occasion); Kevin has his own channels and does some amazing things and Kirsti does her own projects, both solo and with other artists. Most musical groups have a lead and maybe a second lead with the rest generally backups. PTX has five enormous and unique talents in one superb group. It’s like finding a herd of unicorns...
