I've considered it. I work/weld under ASME section 9 Pressure Vessel code. Our in house inspectors are required to have a CWI, but they don't make as much as the welders. However, there are six figure welding engineer jobs in the pressure vessel industry that require a CWI.

I always thought being a CWI would be a good path to take. Then I realized it’s mostly just feeding the coffers of the AWS. Most of the CWI’s I know at least in North Texas work as welding instructors making trash pay. I make more than most of the local CWI’s at my aerospace job and I’m not even welding there. Be nice if the AWS would restructure their business model. It’s my understanding back in the day if you earned an associates degree in welding technology from an accredited community college the AWS would automatically make you a CWI. It seems like the AWS is just in it to make money now. Not trying to be negative but I haven’t heard good reports from the CWI’s I know. Hopefully all of that will change in the coming years. I’d like to do a deep dive into the return on investment.

Pipeline inspectors in West Texas can earn a good salary, especially if they work year-round. With per diem included, it's possible to exceed $200,000 annually.
