The way the alien weapon works is that it fires a harmless targeting beam (basically just a bright light) before it actually releases the destructive pulse. Russell's plane hit the ship just as the destructive part of the weapon was about to fire, which caused it to backfire.
@Tank50us6 ай бұрын
I'm a bit late (though this isn't my first viewing), and you are correct. The actual pulse basically creates a matter/anti-matter reaction that annihilates anything it comes into contact with.... however, under normal circumstances, this would happen _outside_ the ship, with the shields at full strength. However, with the shields down, and the blast happening right at the 'muzzle'... well... Fun fact: In C&C3 Tiberium Wars, the Scrin "Mothership" basically uses this exact same weapon, and any base structure caught without the blast of one will result in the pattern continuing. This probably accounts for why the 'explosion' moves so 'slowly' in the film. One building blows up, the blast hits the next, it blows, and so on.

@@nightofthunder5509 a harpoon is made for anti ship operations. It has the warhead to sink a destroyer sized ship after being hit 2-3 times The only thing it struggles with is the ship's defences such as CIWS or missiles. The reason a lot of the Marines at the start were in their best or dress uniforms was because most of them had the 4th July holiday off (as explained in a throwaway line). Surprised you didn't object to the IAF having Hornets - they'd have F-15s or F-16s Whitmore flew the F-16 in the Gulf War but the avis on the -18 are more or less similar so he'd get the hang of it quickly.

As for whether President Whitmore's character had experience in the Hornet, I believe it's mentioned early on in the movie that he'd flown combat missions during Desert Storm prior to his presidential campaign, so it's possible that he was either in the Hornet or something contemporary to it such as the F-16 or F-15. Also surprised you didn't comment on how they seemed to be calling AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles "AMRAAMs" and using them in an air-to-air role instead of air-to-surface.

I still love this movie too... I remember being up on Cape Cod at my dads house and we went to go see this on opening night. I've never seen a completely packed theater who had an audience so engaged with the feature as this movie. It was just opening night at a random cinema, nothing special other than it being the initial showing of the movie at that theater, and at the end the entire theater gave the movie a standing ovation. Something I can easily see for a good official premier with cast & whatnot attending but a standing ovation without any of the hype around cast & crew is something I never expected and have never seen since despite catching many good opening nights for other movies since then. It might sound sappy, but that was a night that I will remember till the day I die. (and yeah, that has to be the most epic speech in movie history, the only other speech I can think of that comes close is Commander Shepard before the end of the suicide mission in Mass Effect 2... Mark Meer is good in his delivery but Jennifer Hale knocks it clean out of the park)

FYI the end attack by Randy Quaid was initially filmed with him in a biplane with the nuke strapped to the side of the fuselage. Many of the harnesses used Capewell connectors which are only used with backpack chutes, and the ejection seats were Phantom H-7 seats. Lots to pick apart from an ejection seat nerd view. Did love the 'sack of potatoes' PLF
@SynchronizorVideos2 жыл бұрын
I kinda wish they left that in, to be honest. Russell getting kicked out of the jetfighters for being a screw-up, and then showing up anyway with a bomb/missile strapped to his biplane for the 11th-hour hail-Mary is such a great concept.
@anakinflair2 жыл бұрын
@@SynchronizorVideos They have that ending as a deleted scene on the blu-ray. It's actually pretty terrible- how is the biplane keeping up with Hornets and alien fighter craft? How in the hell did Russell get his hands on a nuke? How is the biplane even able to carry it? As for why the Hornet wasn't disintegrated as it flew up the beam, I always took that beam as a targeting beam. The destructive part is shot down that beam after it locks onto a target.
@CharlesP20092 жыл бұрын

8:36 "...when you go fast it doesn't make it hard to breathe." I always interpreted this moment like the pilot was just beginning to have a panic attack and reflex-removed his mask - not for any intelligent reason, but just because it's an instinct that can be hard to overcome during life-threatening moments. I've had two panic attacks in my life, and in both cases I felt like I couldn't breathe. If I'd had a mask on, I might have known it was wrong but pulled it off in that moment regardless. (I'm sure training would help with this - but I'm not sure if it would, for every pilot, in every scenario, guarantee that during a panic attack they didn't do something stupid.) Additionally, if he was pulling even a couple Gs in the pull-up, the character might have had a bit of a "holy shit" feeling in his chest that kind of caused a brief but sharp downward mental spiral at that particular time. If he'd had a moment to think, he might have been OK. Then again, he'd have still probably gotten blasted by aliens. Anyway, I'm interested in whether or not pilots generally understand the impact that a panic attack can have one one's cognition and physical capability during high stress scenarios. One would think it would be common knowledge, but this video doesn't acknowledge this possibility. This reminds me of how PTSD (or, as it was called in the 1940s, "combat stress") was not a real phenomenon, according to Gen. Curtis LeMay, who commanded B-17s in combat over Germany from 1942-1943. (Citation: Mission With LeMay, by Curtis LeMay & McKinlay Kantor; additional citations available upon request.) It would seem that if panic attacks can affect a combat pilot's capabilities so severely, it should perhaps be a better-understood phenomenon amongst pilots. If anyone could help me to understand this better, it would be truly appreciated.

In the book (a novel after the first film) it says, these aliens are living in the hide from an animal species that lives on their home planet. They control the tentacles of their outer body by mere force of their mind. Later in the movie there is the scene where the president negotiates with an alien at area 51 and suffers from a choking fit or from severe headache. Triggered by this observation a security guy decides to shoot the alien through the armored glass in order to protect the president from the mental influence. My take from all of this is, the wingman is being attacked mentally in full flight by one of the pursuers. So taking off his mask is neither from a panic attack nor by the nature of his flight maneuvers.

Thanks for review of my favourite movie. Whatever facts and flaws, it is still my best movie. The speech given by president before final encounter was awesome. I was just 25 then, but felt hot blood and its pressure in my body, its ecstasy. It gives the message that we will not vanish, will fight back and survive.
