The 240v supply is for when the generator isn’t in use it is to keep the generator warm via the heaters and also should be powering battery at least one charger so you don’t have the same issue of them being dead when you come to use them. The charger can also show you the state of the batteries to help with the maintenance schedule. Once the generator is running the heaters can be switched off and turned back on when not in use.

Exactly why I came here to comment. It’s frustrating seeing them not having a better care & maintenance regime for that generator. Not even a trickle charger for the batteries! The 240v heater (and most likely a built-in trickle charger) is for when the external power is on and the genny is standing by, obviously! So frustrating seeing them not look after this vital piece of equipment correctly, and they paid the price!
@theThalyАй бұрын
@@jonathancost4927 Exactly. It's a backup generator, not on site generator. I was so confused when he started complaining about it needing 240v. Daniel keeps on complaining about stuff breaking, people not doing proper maintenance, but you can just see that it's his mentality about stuff that causes this issue. The fact he lost another tire technician, when he can have a person for a full on site maintenance and repairs, instead of them scrambling around panicing how to do stuff when they don't really know is just pure waste of money and time you can solve easily. With the amount of issues, it slowly starts to feel like a for content move, instead of for business.

@@theThaly Obviously they did not fully understand the purpose for that 240 V feed for the heater and the battery charger, having as he mentioned a hard time to wrap their head around why it needs a feed from the grid when it is supposed to generate electricity, and only hooked it up when needed. The generator has a heater and a charger built in, on the control panel you could even see a switch for the battery charger. But those need to be connected to 240 V all the time, runing on grid power, when the generator is not running as you said. So it seems they did not have the equoment properly explained to them, or they did not ask, and whoever did the maintenance, which they did some months ago, did not bother to explain in expectance that anyone having such equipment does know about it. Also, it is not a backup like in a hospital or a datacenter which has to take over within few minutes. They usually have some time getting it up and running, and they have to switch over manually anyways. However, not having the feed hooked up clearly was a huge oversight. And for a generator for their purposes, a weekly test would be overkill. Also he mentioned they tested monthly so far. I work with datacenters a lot, and all of them I know have a monthly test run for generators, none does a weekly one. I know even a hospital or two, even they don´t do weekly tests. But they shure have all they battery chargers and heaters hooked up. Also I wonder why it did not start, I think they did not get it fixed in time and did not try as they got plan B in place, but I still wonder what was up with the thing. We might see the fix next week. For maintenance usually a yearly maintenance is fine, just check certain things every time before and after doing a test run. Wit the tire guy, I think he mentioned it was for personal reasons he left, so we will not know for sure, but he mentioned not getting anyone at the moment. Wasn´t that even the guy that took pride in cleaning up and refurbishing his van? Which mirrors what I see in the job market. There are heaps of vacant jobs, but either you do not get qualified people, or only at a price that, even though it might be deserved, makes economically no sense for a company.
@theThalyАй бұрын
@@alexanderkupke920 I'm pretty sure I read in coments after the video where Daniel talked about him leaving him giving a reason why he left and such. But to be honest Daniel really needs a somewhat of a do all guys that gets paid for maintenance, leading/handling repairs of the whole compound and outside of that getting trained to handle/service everything around the company.
@deniscampbell5613Ай бұрын
Your generator needs a regular maintenance plan, run once a year on a load bank to test its operation fully, 3 or 6 monthly checks and a unloaded run, and I cannot understand that there are no engine or water jacket heaters installed (frost protection )and if they are they must be faulty. If I am stepping on toes by this I apologise but these things are overlooked by many and in doing so you pay the price of it failing when you most need it. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

@@TheByard I think he explained it, he has an electrician, just not one for energy systems, as they do not work on those regularly. Why have someone sitting around just for the generator. For the tyre fitters he mentioned he was trying, but could not get anyone for in House work lately. He usually has his towney doing mechanical stuff and some welding, not sure whats up with that guy lately. The major issue I agree on, I would have done test runs two and one week in advance, to be sure, and he mentioned the heater and battery charger needed a 240 V feed from the grid, they had not understood its purpose and had it not hooked up.
@TheByardАй бұрын
@@alexanderkupke920 The sparky can be doing maintenance routines on the transport fleet etc. They were sending small welding jobs out to get done. I wonder if the tyre fitter problem was lack of weather cover getting sorted. As the guys he did have seamed keen or was that just for the camera. The hatch on the cement silo had not been opened or the seal checked for ages, so where is the preventive maintenance and dedicated operators. I worked on construction sites for several companies, maintenance was the main priority, plant drivers were paid an extra hour per day to ensure greasing, fluids checks and services were done on time. You need to be running, and loading up the genset weekly. You need a 240 supply for the battery chargers and heaters. The gensets I work on heat the coolant and pump it around the engine block to ensure its always ready to start and load up immediately. This is a vital peice of equipment - need to treat it as such.
@alexanderkupke920Ай бұрын
As he had some problems wrapping his head around why the generator needs a 240 V supply, as you said, that is needed for the heater and battery chargers WHILE THE GENERATOR IS NOT RUNNING. So that feed comes from the grid. When the generator is actually running, it is producing its own heat, quite a lot of it. And it charges its batteries, so you would not need that feed anymore. Usually the controll system of the generator would cut that feed out as soon as the generator is running.

The issue is, he talked about that 240 feed the generator needs, they obviously did not have hooked up. That feed is for the heater and for a battery charger that the system has built in. I think on the controll panel you could even see a switch that said Battery Charger. The maintenance should be fine for such a generator, he mentioned it was maintained, which usually is a yearly item, and they test run it monthly before. Which is the interval I know for generators at datacenters as well. I still wonder why it was not starting, they did not show it getting fixed yet.

Daniel , the Heater is to keep the generator in good ambient temperature at any time so that, when the mains are out of order, the generator would be in the best contitions to fire up right away and then heat itself up. It makes sense to have it connected to the mains instead of the generator itself. It aswell means the internal heater in the generator will add to your electricity bill. Having the heater linked to the generator would mean degrading the generator's overall efficiency at the output.

I keep saying it, you guys really need a skid steer. It's especially true with the telehandler gone, a skid with a set of forks attached would've been a much easier way to handle offloading that part, and it's honestly a more appropriate unit for a lot of the lifting work you do around the yard anyway - for example loading and unloading your metal storage racks, where the small size and maneuverability would be huge assets. With other attachments it'd be ideal for things like maintaining the car park, cleaning up the tracks, etc. as well, and would easily pay for itself in saved time and wear and tear on the larger machines.
@pete5044Ай бұрын
A skid steer would not have the reach to unload the the metal racks. There is 2 front end loaders, 25 and 14 ton excavator and some of the hire kit that are all more than capable of cleaning up the yard. Skid steer would be a waste of money

To your question/confusion re why the genset needs 240v for the heater - When the genset is not running, how do you keep the genset warm and the batteries fully charged? - that is what the 240v is for. Its for when the genset is idle and not in use (ie standby generator) When it's running, its providing power which is fine, its when its not running you need the external power

It needs to have normal power plumbed in to keep the batteries charged and warm, and if the power drops then the genny starts and is ready.
