This is actually a really clever scene- what seems like a gag is actually used as a method to move the plot forward as it gets Spartan to realize that Phoenix’s new skills must come from his training. It’s subtle, and I wish more movies would do this kinda thing today

@wespozo And for a reason. All the evidence pointed out that he was a mass murderer. My sister once asked that why they believed Phoenix over Spartan? And I answered: they didn't. All they saw was the results. Spartan went after Phoenix without authorization (or so I remember) and as a result whole lot of people died because of it. Also Spartan has extremely lenghty record of disregarding collateral damage, so it wouldn't be that far fetched that his hate boner got the best of him. Phoenix later said that the hostages were already dead and he killed them so that he could take Spartan with him to prison, but back then there was no way to tell. I assume Phoenix was smart enough not to shoot them or kill them in anyway that would make it clear they weren't killed in an explosion.

Don't be so positive and invent convoluted reasons why the writers and directors of a movie drive a plot. Just understand that it's a movie. It speaks nothing to the reality of identifying COD or the realities of the justice system. And certainly not in the least on how to wipe your ass in the future. The three shells were just another Macguffin and deliberately left unexplained.

That is the point of the movie, and it explained further latter on. On top of that, the rehabilitation is not Matrix style where you just upload anything you want in a few seconds. It takes years for that. In fact, the rehabilitation takes the lenght of your sentence.

You raise a great point, and you're beginning to touch at an irony in this scene -- one of a lot of ironies in this movie, all of which make this movie so amazingly good and extremely well-aged. The irony is that John Spartan and Simon Phoenix _haven't_ changed due to their prison rehabilitation program. Sure, John knows how to do things a seamstress can do, but he's still John Spartan the maniac detective. Simon Phoenix is the same; the only difference now is that instead of being that maniac who established his kingdom in Santa Monica in 1996 (actual dialogue from the movie, btw) through his sheer talent; the _only_ difference now is that he has the actual technique and the training to back up his sheer talent. So, essentially, the irony is that the prison rehabilitation program *_didn't change John or Simon at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!_* And that they're the same people who they've always been. And this is further proven when Dr. Cocteau, the supposed mastermind who supposedly programmed Phoenix to have all these skills, is killed, admittedly, not by Phoenix, but _still instead by Phoenix's order!!!!!_ He orders that Jesse Ventura henchman to kill Cocteau, essentially showing that he, Phoenix, is *_Above_* what anyone programs him to be!!!!!!!! This movie is really fucking amazing, and really really good, and the acting performances by Stallone and, of course, especially Snipes are so, so good, and the writing in this movie is fucking amazing as well; because I watched damn near every scene of this movie, I kept thinking to myself, "Holy shit, more and more meta and fuckin meta commentary and shit" fuckin awesome ass movie man, awesome ass movie, incredibly smart and incredibly sharp
