The subtitles were off for us the first two episodes! We used our Apple TV and the Netflix app on there didn't have subtitles for the dub, just English subtitles for the sub. We swapped to our smart TV to watch after episode 2. Just a heads up! -Sam

A brain dance is a VR experience, but it actually tricks your nervous system so that you actually can feel, smell, taste, etc. everything in the "BD". You can record people's experiences and others can replay them as if they were actually there in the moment. That's what you saw in the beginning. David relived the brain dance of that guy going cyber psycho and getting killed by MaxTac (basically elite SWAT police).

It's called a "Braindance" you use it to re-live someone else's experience. You feel the person's emotions and everything they are feeling physically from that moment.

The "dub" is the regular version. It's set in Night City which is in America on the west coast so they speak English. It's kind of analogous to a futuristic Los Angeles.

This anime is an amalgamation of so many sources from so many places around the world you can make an argument for almost any of them being the "right" way to experience it. English because of the setting, or because the original creator of Cyberpunk was American? Japanese because the anime was made by a famous Japanese studio? Or maybe Polish because the video game the story is directly based off of is made by Polish developers? Which is to say, just watch it whatever way you enjoy the most, just like all media. There's no correct way.

@@LeaugeOfGaming Japanese people came up with Vinland Saga. Americans came up with Cyberpunk. Even the Polish devs of the game knew they were working on an American IP and creating an adaptation of it. The Japanese ver is a dub, not the original. Studio Trigger were commisioned as animators not creators - the credits prove that much. Nobody can deny how much of their own flavour and talent theyve injected into it but its still an American IP first and foremost. Its like the Lord of the Rings anime. That will also be Japanese artists working on an English work. Japanese is no more the original for this than Polish is.

@@LeaugeOfGaming No not Cyberpunk the genre - Cyberpunk the tabletop RPG setting, its made by Mike Pondsmith as shown in the credits at the start. The IP is unequivocally American. Netflix are wrong and unsurprusing really. Netflix adaptation is a derogative for that very reason, they couldnt find their arse with both hands. English is the original Im afraid. Japanese is the dub.

Studio Trigger is phenomenal, they always deliver with amazing animation. Combining them with the storytelling of CDPR just made this show instantly one of my favorites.

The places in the show are places you can actually visit in the game. They said they went into the game and took screenshots, and after the show, a lot of the cyberpunk community went into the game to visit the shows places, with some of them having references to the show, since it takes place before the game.

Cyberpunk the game was bad at launch, but it had a huge patch and it's a great game now + there's a large dlc coming around the corner

He wasn’t controlling the guy at the beginning, he was watching a “braindance.” It’s a live recording of other people’s experiences down to the the physical feeling of what was happening. BD is a braindance, XBD is the nsfw one he watched second. The cop cars had NCPD on the side for Night City. You said it may be in New York, it’s actually set out near the desert around the Cali/Nevada border.

The Cyberpunk game is by far my favorite single-player game of all time. It's in an amazing place right now, play it if you haven't yet, you won't be disappointed. The crazy part about all the corporate red tape... like with david not being able to see his mom because her health care package doesnt have visitation rights... all of this is a mock up of current society and where it will eventually go. And sadly... from when this show first came out to now ive only been seeing more and more signs of this. Soon this will be the world we live in. Corporations will run everything. You pay for exist. And no one has your back except yhe family you make.

What do you mean sub snobs bro the japanese voice actors are literally just better... That's not the case for every anime in existence but it is for most, including edgerunners. The japanese dialogue kinda sucks but the english subbed dialogue is better than both the japanese and english voice dialogue if you're using the correct subs and not a transcription of the english dub.

Just figured I would help you out a little bit. As others have probably mentioned The first scene was David reliving the final moments of a Cyberpsycho through an XBD which is another term for ultra explicit movies (Porn, Snuff films, Death, Murder, and any other real graphic circumstances) from a first person perspective. Also, David can sense and the feelings, emotions, and injuries the person felt at the time. You will learn how the Sandevistan (Spinal tech), and the mom tie into things later. Just pay close attention what you saw in the first episode. You will learn where/how she got it. Corpo is the the "official" term for anyone working at corporations in this series. Suit is just synonym for that. Corporations rule everything in this city which is why everyone wants to join them, and why David's mom wants him to join them. They have the best medical care (Trauma Team), make vastly more money than the average person, and have many basic life luxuries that 80% of the city does not have. Trauma Team is like a military version of an ambulance for rich people/important people. They go into dangerous situations to rescue people who are injured, or dying and will kill any enemies in their way to do so, provided the person has the platinum package coverage. One of the two most feared government gorups. MaxTac is the other most feared government group next to (TT) They are pretty much another highly advanced, military police force/SWAT unit. They deal with any of most damaging scenarios (usually Cyberpsychosis). Cyberpsychosis is when people go insane/crazy because their body cannot adapt to the amount of Chrome (upgrades) they install. Everytime a person undergoes an "upgrade" they run the risk of this happening. Some can go crazy after dozens of upgrades while others it only takes one. I think that should cover most of the basic stuff you should know if you haven't played they game. Have fun watching.

The thing at the start was BD. Basically they take the memories of a person: Live or dead. and sell em to people to live through that moment. Depending on the level of BD you buy you can feel the emotions, or literally everything, including the pain, pleasure, ect. of the person. Now what David was first experiencing was obviously a black market one. Like watching a snuff film. The follow up was that sex scene. It's why he had to wash his pants after....He either shit himself from dying in the first or cleaning the jizz up from the second.

Her having no/bad insurance is a very common thing for people in the healthcare even today.. Even nurses don't get great benefits unless they work at a county hospital. She is an EMT/ Ambulance driver. It's very surprising to learn but EMTs practically earn minimum wage (In California) even though a 2-block ambulance ride will cost you AT LEAST $1500. F U.S. healthcare system for real and I say that as a registered nurse.

Corpo is what they are called in the cyberpunk universe (which is originally an english pen and paper roleplaying game like dungeons and dragons). Suits is shat we call them irl. Dont know why the dubs confused cyberpunk and irl terminology but i can understand your confusion :)

Everyone sounding japanese is not how the show was intended. Plus... falco is voiced by one of my favorite voice actors.

David wasnt playing a game in the beginning. He was watching what is called a brian dance. Its a virtual reality movie that is 100% real life. Due to the cybernetics everyone has installed they can record what they see. A brian dance is a clip of an experience saved for future viewing. So david was watching a real shoot out between that cyberpsycho and the cops from the cyberpsychos point of view. So realistic your brain thinks its real until you snap out of it. Meaning you can sugfer actual trama and ptsd from "experiencing" a hyper violent brain dance like that one.

Maybe you've already put it together from future episodes, but BD is shorthand for Braindance. Basically somebody can record (or "scroll") their experiences using tech in their heads. Those recordings can then be edited and distributed for people to connect to using the VR like headsets, where you can experience it yourself. It connects directly to the brain, so you feel everything the same way the person scrolling it did. XBD means Extreme Braindance and usually are illegal, unedited, and cover extremely graphic content without pain limiters. These are mostly for thrill junkies or fetishists who want to experience something like murder or dying without doing it in real life. David was watching an XBD of the soldier who went Cyberpsycho and killed a bunch of cops at the beginning of the episode.

The game Cyberpunk 2077 released in December of 2020 but the problem with its release is that the game was incredibly glitched and bugged. Currently I think the game has been updated and plays much better now. The anime is really cool

That wasn't the actual problem with the game. It being a completely hollow shell of a game was the issue. The bugs just took over the bulk of the conversation. Bugs are fixed, game is still shallow and completely awful.
