The reason the Frosmoths were taking less damage was because of its hidden ability Ice Scales, which halves the damage taken from special moves i.e. iron jugulis's air slash

What a fun video showcasing not only a great team for you to pilot, but a taste of what makes Pokemon so special from all these unique and creative opponents. They all put together teams that featured super uncommon Pokemon in ways that did everything possible to maximize the strengths they had. Such a cool episode of Road to Ranked!
@WillieG-jh6jz Жыл бұрын
It’s true. The meta shifts sooooo fast with all these competitions being streamed especially. You can see the meta instantly changes within days after the tournaments. Which makes it really fun imo. It’s not as stagnant as playing the same teams for one whole ranked battle season. Which can get really boring.

That game #3 really made me think of a pretty neat combo of terastalizing Coalossal to something like Grass or Water, then Alomamola (or something else) could use Surf, hitting Coalossal and giving it a speed boost thanks to Steam Engine. Not sure how strong it'd be, but at least it'd be cool.

I agree with Aaron Re: encore on iron bundle and just generally love encore on fast pokemon! Online, when they don't know you have it, it basically invalidates protect and set up and wins games on its own. In open team sheet, it tends to provoke a more offensive playstyle. It's also just enormously punitive to more defensive dondozo. Plus, encore functions very well in teams with abilities like flash fire, storm drain, lightning rod, shadow tag, etc. There's just so much good tech available with it.
@noyakami7775 Жыл бұрын
I'm very new to VGC, so I sometimes make gameplans for fun, and game 3 was interesting to me, my immediate thought was to lead Iron Jugulis + Great Tusk because Great Tusk was so threatening to their team, against Alo + Coal I would probably Headlong Rush into Coal + Tailwind (I could be messing up speed tiers), against Iron Moth + Flutter Mane, I would probably do Tera Ground EQ + Tailwind. These were my immediate thoughts (+ bringing Iron Bundle + Iron Hands in the back bc lategame Sash with its coverage seemed nice and Iron Hands was hard for them to break outside of Flutter Mane) Retrospective, the two things that would be kinda annoying would be Grimmsnarl + Flutter Mane lead because the fear of Fake Out would give them a free screen and screens in general seem kinda tough for this team because it exerts so much immediate offensive pressure and having that weakened is very limiting, granted my team comp for this matchup is very aggressive/offensive. Some feedback would be nice, as I'm trying to learn. Great video, Aaron, it was a pleasure to watch!

I was looking at that endgame with Belly Drum Iron Hands, where you were wondering whether the Air Slash would KO or not. I was thinking the best play would have been Tailwind + Psychic, since given the previous damage rolls were showing another Psychic would be enough to knock it out :) And Tailwind would have given Goth the jump on Sylveon. Wanted to share that cause I was pretty happy getting that idea when I was watching it
@kyleheck5363 Жыл бұрын
I know people don’t like iron jugulis because of its mid typing and the fact that it looks really similar to its ancestor, but honestly I love it. Might just be because I have a soft spot for some less liked pokemon but it has grown on me a lot
@zacharyseiders5793 Жыл бұрын
Used a Jugulis for both a singles double. The singles is an offensive set of dark pulse, hurricane, taunt and Tera ground. Complimented by a speed booster. (Prankster Thunderus was crucial for the rain) The other is a support build much like this one except air slash and protect are replaced with air cutter and taunt. Both got me in the Master Ball rank.

I'm curious - I didn't really play much vgc before this gen. How much team variety is there in this gen vs. previous ones? Based on the gen 8 videos I've seen, it seems like there are a lot more competitively viable pokemon in this format than last gen. Definitely enough to make it hard to keep track of them all, at least.
@hauleez1 Жыл бұрын
Your latter assessment is correct
@namo2403 Жыл бұрын
the general rule is that the lower the "overall power" is , the more variety there is in the meta. an example would be vgc2019 where primal groudon + xerneas / primal kyogre+rayquaza in every team
@AmazingAmpharos Жыл бұрын
Mathematically, this format has 21 Pokemon at 10%+ usage (meta staples), 42 Pokemon at 2%+ usage (common Pokemon), and 55 Pokemon at 1%+ usage (relevant Pokemon). Of course this game is still relatively young so some more Pokemon are moving (like right now Lilligant is barely sub-1% but it will certainly be moving above that as time passes). We don't have data for series 1-4 from Sword and Shield so we can't look at the pre-DLC format for a direct comparison (we do have series 5 for the main IoA format I guess), but series 9 (the main Crown Tundra meta) is not a horrible comparison and is the most significant Sword and Shield format IMO. This has 20 Pokemon at 10%+ usage, 53 Pokemon at 2%+ usage, and 69 Pokemon at 1%+ usage. Of course, this isn't fully fair as a lot more total Pokemon were available in that format versus this one, but that makes only a small difference (series 5 from gen 8 is only very slightly less diverse than series 9). Either way, I think the math suggests the gen 9 meta is similarly diverse at the top but tapers off somewhat more heavily than what was typically seen in gen 8, probably because we effectively have a format with a lot of legendaries (the Paradox Pokemon) so the standard of power isn't really lower than the DLC gen 8 formats but far fewer total legendaries available than we saw in gen 8 and also a lot of the best non-legendary Pokemon are just not available (Pokemon like Whimsicott, Porygon2, and Incineroar) so perhaps the DLC (and the legalization of things like the treasures of ruin and Walking Wake) will change this by keeping the power level about the same (only a little higher) but just giving more choices at that high power level. I also think Dondozo is also a bit of a specific heavy disincentive for not using a team too low in fundamental power, but that's a bit murky and not a data driven viewpoint so much as my subjective guess about a cause of what the numbers show. If you're comparing to the one in-person tournament format of gen 8, that was a restricted format which is a type of format that always has drastically less Pokemon viability than other formats as the handful of the best restricted Pokemon warp the entire metagame around themselves. It's just unfortunate that gen 8 never got a chance to have its better formats on the big stage as honestly pre-restricted gen 8 is the most diverse Pokemon has ever been. But yeah, if you specifically compare a format that allows ridiculous Pokemon like Zacian to this one that doesn't, this is notably more diverse by comparison. I don't think gen 9, when it has Koraidon and Miraidon who are both also ridiculous themselves, will fare better, but I guess that remains to be seen.
@OrionSeas Жыл бұрын
@@AmazingAmpharos Thanks for that analysis! Dondozo, is definitely one of those Pokemon that you do really need to have some kind of definitive answer for or it can roll your entire team, but it's not so powerful that it's totally centralizing. I'm dreading the next restricted format, but up until that point I'm really looking forward to the continued SV regulations. There are tons of interesting team options, and between the new Pokemon and the different availability from SwSh, everything just feels super fresh.
