Amazing! One correction: I don't think rear wheel drive will be valid as an amphibian, because the truck needs to be able to exit the water with the front wheels force, unless you want to back up onto the shore, which will be tricky with the V shaped back wheels at point of contact. Another idea that is, IMHO, a no-brainer, is that Cybertruck should have some kind of bus connector in the rear. This should be a standard feature. Plugging in a connector would provide power, data, and control links with the Cybertruck. Imagine a trailer that has its own electric battery pack and its own motor(s) and brakes. You would connect the trailer to a tow hitch, and plug in a bus connector. Now the Cybertruck can ask the trailer what kind of device it is, and if the Cybertruck knows how to talk to it, the Cybertruck can control the extra motor(s) and brakes. You step on the brake pedal, the trailer brakes help the Cybertruck stop. And, the trailer can have cameras on it, and Cybertruck can use them for backing up and for self-driving. A bus connector would allow so many possibilities. And Tesla must have thought of it. Getting back to the boat: if Cybertruck has a bus connector, then an electric outboard motor that attaches to the tow hitch could be powered and controlled by the bus. If Cybertruck has software for it, the accelerator pedal would control the prop speed on the outboard. Turning the steering wheel could pivot the outboard around.

"Just like Cybertruck..." Good catch. I never caught that point as they were describing the 3rd gen assembly process during the Investor Day presentation. Elon always stated in his tweets and elsewhere that the Cybertruck will be a technological tour de force and most advanced Tesla ever produced. So it stands to reason that along with drive by wire steering, it most likely have brake by wire eliminating the traditional hydraulic braking system. In fact, I'm willing to bet the Cybertruck will be the first vehicle to be produced with the revolutionary Brembo Sensify brake by wire system. I've seen videos of the system being tested on the Model 3 Performance, which is no surprise since Tesla has a long standing relationship with Brembo. Although Brembo states they expect it to be in production by late 2024 I believe they are sandbagging and will make it to production on the Cybertruck when it starts production in late 2023.

I object to the "should not leak at all". Early ocean-going vessels always leaked at some rate. We'd just have a few sailors man the pumps. With any older boats, it usually was a measure of "how much" did they leak, vs whether they leaked. They all did, and it was OK.

I had the same thought. Unless someone makes some modifications no one should think of the Cybertruck as a boat to take out on the lake. Rather, it is something that can cross a creek or even a river if there is no bridge available, provided that there are suitable landings on either side. It also has the advantage that if it should _accidentally_ get into water somehow, it has a decent chance of getting out - or at least of floating long enough for the passengers to safely exit without difficulty. For such uses it does not have to be entirely leak proof - it just has to be be able to keep the leaks small enough that they make no appreciable difference if it is in water for ten or fifteen minutes.

You missed 2 points - the seal on the bed gate (normal pick-ups don‘t have any, and compressed air. Compressed air could be used to power a water jet that would only be a tube with the proper shape.

An alternate proposal: If we play with mass market economics: 1. Having 2 part numbers for hub coverings is a economics problem as you mentioned. 2. Independantly steerable right and left wheels may still be more expensive than linked wheels. So, consider installing the same hub covers on all wheels. Then by independantly controlling front and back wheel speeds (or just turning front wheels with all wheels at the same speed) you can rotate the Cybertruck 90 degrees and then rotate all wheels in the same direction and travel forwards albeit sideways facing. Only 1 hubcover part and no requirement for 4 wheel independant suspension. Indeed this would work with all wheel drive with only front steering where front wheels are locked to each other. Maybe you can comment on the efficiency of your solution (forces lost through angled force vector from turned wheels, but better hydrodynamics due to forward motion) vs this solution (aligned force vectors, but worse hydrodynamics due to sideways motion) 4 of the same hub cover would cause an asymmetrical force during normal road driving, but I suspect nothing than couldn't be compensated for fairly easily. It's more cool to move forward and there's better visual field. But maybe that's just tradition and maybe we need a new ism. Symmetrism ;)

After releasing the video I realized they don't even need new wheels. Uber turbines can do the job (although less efficient than if designed for water) and if we want to reverse the flow inward, all that is needed is to switch between right and left wheels. I am highly convinced about Independent steering. Everything be wire will simplify installation considerably (discussed further in my "Diamond steering" Cybertruck technologies video

@@ConnectingODots I agree on drive by wire. Simplifies so many things including allowing much easier "unboxed" assembly process as Tesla recently outlined. Hydraulic and physical connections are so much more of a pain which connecting pre-assembled modules comparing to connecting network to each module. What confused me is that for quad motors, independant 4 wheel steering is obvious, but for double motor, it seems likely that the wheels could turn in your proposed "chevron" mode. It seems less clear as maybe a linkage connecting both front wheels and separately both rear wheels might be cheaper than 4 wheel steering. I'm out of my depth here.

It’s possible that Tesla’s shift to 48v is also part of the move to drive by wire. Having 48v makes it significantly easier to do actuators instead of hydraulics.

A proposal for crossing water with currents: As in previous comments, consider 4 identical hub coverings and no requirement for all 4 wheels to be independantly steered. Have all 4 wheels turned to face the same direction so the vehicle would "crabwalk" if on land. In a lake (no currents), the wheel propulsion forces would all align, but the angle of the truck would cause tacking. This assumes wheels can turn less than 90 degrees. If fighting a current on a river, this might be perfect and be more efficient. Do you think tacking the truck on a lake as proposed would be faster than your proposal?

I think the rear wheels will suck from the outside thrusting water under the truck. This would cause the flows to collide with eachother and increase the forward motion as a result. The front might do this too but with the additional wheel rotation it likely wouldn't be a benefit.

@@ConnectingODots - the next step in the design you didn't mention is to shape the inner wheel well & underside of the truck to direct the water flow from the hubs backwards... thus turning lateral thrust into forward thrust. . . even a slight scoop backwards in the wheel well would dramatically increase forward thrust. This turns the hub prop into more of a jet drive ... ( check out how water jet drives direct their thrust without moving the turbine.)

Given that the cybertuck is going to have a massive air suspension sustem, what are the prospects of adding a rubber inner tube in a hidden compartment so that with a push of a button the air suspension inflates it and it can become a cyberzodiac? A pair of pontoons would add to the buoyancy a lot, right? Thinking this through further, you could have one hidden inflatable in each wheel well. The air suspension would raise the truck to the 16" height max then these hidden inflatables would fill with air, and would work the same way arm floaties work for kids in a pool. Since theyre directly over the tires, they'd keep the water level over the tires so the tires could remain submerged for the unterturbines to propel the truck forward.

As the Model Y Performance owner, I noticed that these astonishing Uberturbine rims are non-directional. In the video (28:18), you can see the spokes' shape. On the right side, this will pull the car forward, but on the left side, it is inefficient. In other words, the rims have to be directional.

Very nice! I think the Uberturbine/Inductio wheels are only cut in one direction, so they expel air on one side of the car, while sucking in air on the other side. Either way it cools the brakes. As you state, the Cybertruck wheels will need a left/right version. Sucking water in would provide additional buoyancy, but adjusting the suspension height is also helpful, as this changes how much of the tire is submerged. I imagine trimming the pitch is important, as keeping the hood above the water is important to avoiding downforce. One important factor is that the battery (and therefore center-of-mass) is near the center of the vehicle, unlike ICE which is heavily affected by the engine. I think your method is more likely than the electric prop for another reason: the electric power necessary. Assuming even a minimal 10HP, that's 7.5kW (after losses), so any meaningful amount of power would require significant power infrastructure for a feature that hardly anyone would buy. Even less than lumbar support. That would definitely be a "delete" part.

With the turbine wheels, though, don’t you still have the same problem of having the wheels be not it will be reflected? Or are you saying that because the wheels not only can be turned independently, but their direction of motion is independent, that is, there’s no axle between them, essentially meaning that each wheel has its own motor, That you would then be turning each wheel in the same direction? Even if you grant that, which is certainly possible, there are other potential issues. For instance, where are the brakes? This version of an aquatic Cybertruck would be of tremendous value to the Ukrainian military. They have a situation where they need a large number of people, equipment, and ammunition to cross a river quickly, quietly, and repeatedly at night because the Russians blew up the bridges. If there were only a couple hundred of these available now, what a difference a year makes.

You'll have a frunk, so you shouldn't need the traditional truck toolbox. The frunk will be much easier to get to, too. There might be some other storage options. I don't know about the rack, but any sort of rack will mess with the aerodynamics so ideally a rack should be removable and easily installed when needed. The obvious way to do this would be to include maybe four or six quick mounting points and sell racks (maybe foldable?) that work with those mounting points.

What I'm getting at is whether this will actually be attractive to tradesfolk, or if it will just be a "nerd pleasurecraft". I'm hopeful it will be the former... Especially, in terms of lower maintenance costs for fleets. I'm sure you guys have seen the trucks where the toolboxes run the length of the bed, on both sides... Not sure if all that will fit in the frunk. Anyhow ... Fingers crossed!

@@buixote - the original prototype had some storage in the sail pillars, similar to the service bodies you are thinking of. I don't know if that made it to the final design. Keep in mind, however, that most of those service trucks only have one row of seating for passengers, whereas the Cybertruck has two rows. I can certainly imagine the rear seats being removed and cabinets installed to increase storage space for tools if necessary. IIRC there is already some storage space under the rear seat.
