Bicycle-trips in foreign lands are potentially so much more challenging and rewarding than anything in outback Australian motorbiking. Much appreciated for you to share the journey with us once again.

@@backwoodsman1753 I have found cycle touring to be a great way of seeing a country and experiencing everything their culture has to offer at a much slower pace. It is definitely rewarding and I hope to continue for a few years yet. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Hi Steve, Pete from Alice Springs (Carol picked up Tom from Birdsville). Sadly we were involved in a head on south of Cairns and Carol died...I'm gutted. I'm seeing the psychologist weekly and I talked about your videos and your adventures. We spoke about this particular adventure, she said it's right up my alley. I'm an ex roadie and love cycling. Really enjoyed this trip. Your battle up that hill reminded me of my cycling holiday in 1990, when I rode up to Logan Pass at 2025m on the Going To The Sun Highway in Montana. Did it on a fully loaded touring bike in the rain and had a rear tyre blowout at one stage. On the decent I freewheeled for 30 minutes! Looking forward to more cycle trips, perhaps you might consider Japan as it is very cycling conscious and the people are very friendly and helpful.

Steve: I don't mind sleeping under the stars on my trips in my country... it's My Country!... But when visiting other countries, I'm not just me-I represent My Country! So I'll take the room, and I'll put up a fight! Respect is all that is!
@mongreldogproductions4 күн бұрын
I’m not sure I understand. I’ve never had to sleep rough on any of my cycle touring trips overseas. It has come close a couple of times but I’ve always been able to source a room. I’ve camped when touring in Australia but never overseas. Camping gear is just another burden and adds weight when touring in another country. I know of some round the world (RTW) travellers choose to camp to keep costs down and to be self sufficient. 😀

What model Giant are you riding Steve?
@mongreldogproductions5 күн бұрын
Hi bazza, its a $1,000 off the shelf 24 speed Giant Talon Mountain Bike with 1.50 wide road tyres fitted. It has covered thousands of km both here in Australia and overseas. I spend a bit of $$$$ on servicing and preventative maintenance to ensure trouble free motoring. Because it is not a high end bike, any schmuck can repair or fix it. I swap out tyres depending on which country I am in and the likely terrain or road surface.
@bazza89475 күн бұрын

Well one wonders Steve, why don't you just have panniers.
@mongreldogproductions5 күн бұрын
Hi MP, This is a cut and paste from another comment that might explain a couple of things... Hi J***, secretly, everybody wishes they had a BOB trailer. Mine has covered about 28,000km of trouble-free touring with only the tyre being swapped out a few times and replacing the wheel bearing once. It unhitches (2 clips) in an instant and then the bike is ready for local touring....no pulling off bags or emptying the contents. The bike still behaves like a bike because you haven't messed around with weight distribution. It still has a low centre of gravity and the trailer tracks very well in snotty conditions (it has a sprung swingarm). I don't have to remember which compartment my undies or toothpaste is in because mine will be in the one big bag that I carry. The trailer packs down and becomes my check-in baggage on the aircraft. I started my cycle touring using the traditional panniers front and rear and wore the bags out within 4 years (zips break, the bags wear thin or rip, hard to keep waterproof). When it was time to replace the bags i considered my options and decided the trailer may be a better option. Be warned, there are cheap Chinese knock offs out there. You get what you pay for. Mine is a BOB (Beast of Burden) Ibex but they are no longer in production". End of transcript. Thanks for watching. 😀
