Took the MFS course without any prior riding experience. Was asked to leave on day one because I was keeping the class behind. The "instructor" suggested I give up on riding because it was going to be extremely hard for me to learn. Decided to buy my first bike, got a temporary permit from the dmv and focused on parking lot skills for 3 months. Went back, took the test and passed. 3 years later, I'm still riding and loving every minute of it. A word of advice for everyone wanting to learn how to ride with NO experience, DON'T GIVE UP and don't listen to people saying you will not be able to ride.

A few things that help a new rider (and semi new): 1) Being comfortable on a bicycle, especially a road bike on streets. Cycling and motorcycling are largely the same with obvious differences (speed, weight etc). But if you are stable on a bicycle and have driven in traffic on a bicycle you will have a much easier time learning to ride. 2) If you are still nervous of the transition from bicycle to motorcycle, then do a moped/scooter with automatic transmission. One that can hit over 30 mph especially. This will get you used to riding faster in traffic while being vulnerable, but at the same time a lower speed to help get you acclimated. 3) Experience with a manual transmission car. This was essential (for me at least). It helped me a lot, as I already understood all of the fundamentals of driving manual. It helps ease some of the nerves you may have. If you don't have this, spend time in a parking lot learning on a bike or something and build up the skill of shifting. 4) Nothing beats actually riding. Like someone mentioned about going to a motorcycle safety course that they were told to give up, and they got the permit and practiced on their own. A safety course is a good idea but perhaps practice on easier roads and lots prior to going to one of those so you don't have the same experience. 5) Wear proper gear. Do not be one of those douche bags that is riding on the highway with sneakers, shorts, and a wife beater. Not only do they look stupid, they will straight up be dead or lose their skin when they get into even a minor spill. The gear helps your confidence and has a calming effect. I cannot tell you how often a rock hits my visor on my full enclosure helmet right between the eyes. You will not avoid it. It will happen. Be prepared. Have a jacket, full enclosure helmet, and jeans at least. Also riding boots (shoes) are highly suggested. Further about this is a windshield. In lower speeds they are not absolutely required (city driving 25-50mph) but they also add a lot of protection from flying debris. In higher speeds they help displace the wind to limit the turbulence effect you feel. Again they also add more confidence to help calm your nerves if you have them. 6) Ride every day. do not limit it to grocery trips once per week always taking the same straight road when there is no traffic. I ride my motorcycle to work every day and try to do every single errand on it. I ride for convenience and economics. I do not ride to be cool or go fast - but I also live in a city that doesnt have a real winter so its easy for me to ride regularly. If you treat you bike like a special occasion (when youre still new) you wont build confidence or skill. 7) Practice turning on bending roads, even after you've been using your bike for a year. It will take a basic understanding of physics and how much to lean/shift your weight depending on speed and how sharp the turn is... but understanding how to drive on a windier road is essential. Do not drive on sharp ass windy roads at 20+ over the speed limit. That is one of the many ways riders die, especially on windy mountainous roads. But once you understand how to turn properly everything will be so much easier and your confidence will skyrocket. Another reason this skill is needed is to stop hitting the brakes on sharp turns. This is very dangerous as your wheel has less surface connection when you are banking your motorcycle so when you hit the brakes you have a higher chance to lose control and wipe out. It is ok to let off the accelerator, but the more you practice the less speed youll need to lose when banking, and eventually youll maintain speed or even accelerate through windy roads.

I had a ball in the riders course. Most of students in my class were falling over due to choosing a heavy ass motorcycle. I did the whole course on a 50cc & 125cc scooter lol, because I wasn't 100% sure if I was going to go on and get a motorcycle. I eventually did get a motorcycle. Looking back, I wouldn't change the way I approached learning to ride. 😃

In Florida if you already have your drivers license, you only have to take the MSF class and then you go to the DMV and they just add the endorsement to your DL. You don’t have to take another test at the DMV.
@CycleCruza5 жыл бұрын
That's usually the case in most places. There are two options, either skip the MSF class and just take the skills test or take the MSF class and get your endorsement. The MSF is not only the better choice but it's much easier to get your endorsement that way. Like I said most new riders fail the skills test, when I took it eleven years ago, me and another guy were the only ones to pass the skills test, everybody else failed bad.You will learn more skills at the MSF class.

A decade later, but that was my exact experience also, except in Delaware. The test was pretty much a joke. There wasn't even an MSF class back then.

just out of curiosity, how many figure 8s have you needed to do on your bike since 1975? I'm a little annoyed I failed my msf course because of a mostly useless and impractical maneuver, when I have all of the other life saving skills down flawlessly.

When I took the MSF class in Washington State, you could pass the written and skills test over that weekend. We did have a few drop out because they couldn't keep up with the skills training. One person bought all her gear and motorcycle, but couldn't pass, even taking her Ativan...so, had to sell her bike. Lessons learned, don't buy a bike until you pass the class...and if you gotta take Ativan to ride, may want to try something else.

I took the MSF course in West Virginia. They had Honda Nighthawk 250s and on the last day we took the test on their bike. They then gave me an endorsement to take to the DMV to have it put on my license. Those small bikes were like riding a bicycle.

I have been riding for years and years offroad and then I got a permit and a street bike and rode with out taking the course. Finally in my early 40s I took the saftey class for my license and passed . I thought I was cool and didnt need the class or any safety gear. I was a squid fool . Now I ride with license and full gear. I should have taken the class years ago. On the real I got new respect and skills for bikes.

The “safety” course tell you to use 4-finger clutch and brake. If you don’t do it that way, you won’t pass. It’s stupid. It’s like forcing people to write with their right hand when they are left handed. The best way to brake/clutch is 2-finger or 1-finger. They also tell you to keep the bike in gear at a red light and keep the clutch in, which is also stupid. No wonder people crash their bikes.

I know this video is kind of old, but my problem is that all classes for certification are booked - even the ones from Harley for $450! And just a couple months ago, they were totally open to taking a class ASAP if you wanted... I've been riding motorcycles since I was 12. Bought a new Suzuki DRZ400. I'm going to practice and take the test but I'm not even allowed to ride to a parking lot unless I'm with a buddy with a motorcycle license! I hate these stupid laws. I have no choice but to risk getting caught so I can practice... Stupid government.

I just recently as of yesterday failed the motorcycle safety class a two day class. Coming into it, I had no prior experience with riding motorcycles. I told my instructors that this my first time ever and had no experience. They were very understanding and professional. At the end of my day I went up to get my evaluation and honestly told them I felt that I did terrible at the end for that final speed test changing from first to second gear letting go of the clutch to early and throttle. Am I the only one who failed the MS class, going into I have zero riding experience there was no guarantee a first timer would pass that class.

I know this comment is a year old, but dude I didn’t start out on a manual. I mean I used to ride an ATV that was a manual, but I didn’t like it and wasn’t good at it. By now I’m sure you’ve already passed the course, but always starting out on a CVT or DCT. With a DCT, it has a clutch AND auto, like on the Honda NC750X, which is an awesome bike! I’ve got a Honda ADV150, fully auto and I ride it all over my neighborhood & have traffic cones that I use in parking lots to practice in. Sometimes it’s best for some pretty us to start out on scooter engines with full auto, then swap over to a DCT to learn how to use a clutch, then we can use any 6-speed wet clutch on the market ;)

I’m pretty sure I can ride better than 90% of most people. I can wheely all day long. Do stoppees. Jump jumps but I failed the test twice on my ZX6r because I would lock the bars out around the turns and either put my foot down or ride out of the line. Better off taking this guys advice or just rent a small motorcycle or a scooter over 50cc to take the test. Something easier to ride than a sport bike. I easily passed the test on a dual sport.

My dmv actually has a painted circle 8s course but it sucked cause touching line was auto fail. Take the rider course. I actually failed the rider course first time Haha. My advice, get a 250 and use it at the course, practice, and DON'T get a waiting list during winter time. I failed cause that cheap old Honda rebel they give kept dying in 30 degree December morning at 6:30 am start. They failed me on a 22 score and we needed 20 cause motor would die out and I'd have to touch ground. Practiced on my ninja 250, rode it at 2nd rider course and tore it up perfect 100%. We had to ride over 2x4s and actually make skid marks on that swerve and brake maneuver. Only shtty thing is I had to pay $220 msf fee first time and another $250 second time cause I waited more than 6 weeks to retake back in 2009. I chose to buy a bike and practice using permit, which I highly suggest. I went to parks, empty school grounds, and undeveloped housing communities for street practice. A HD rider was with is in class, he rode 30 years on just permit. He couldn't pass dmv test with his heavy bike. One other thing.. your dmv tests questions are online. Just Google, theres a very good site with both cycle and auto practice tests. I had to retake both again to get the new California DL last July.

I just took my DMV skills test today and failed. I’ve been riding for six months, bought a 2021 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 classic. I don’t recommend anyone take the test on that size bike after having done it today. That skills test is made for smaller bikes imo but they should have a test that could be used by any size bike. I wasted my time and the government is going to keep setting people up to fail. Don’t waste your time, use a small bike on the test if you don’t take the MSF course.

MSF in Vegas only had one cruiser. The rest/all were 1983 Suzuki 250’s. 120 degrees in Vegas. & the instructors were. Ummmhh. Showing favoritism & talking politics & talking to a grown man ( me) like I was a child. They were not teaching they were drill Sargents 😆. Obviously that didn’t fly with me specially w/17 years of experience & trying to educate them on 2000-2020 bikes ( slipper clutch, abs, Kill switch- 😆) They were on one side. Only 1983 bikes ( no mirrors but we had to do the lane switch & check your mirrors before turning). I was like, huh? Come again? Total trash.

I just bought an R6 but I don't have my license yet, where I live you can ride without a licence as long as you're with someone that has their full motorcycle license. Is the test doable with an R6 as a complete beginner? I have no prior riding experience but I feel like I'm doing pretty good just by watching KZbin videos. MSF course cost about $600 here and they don't give you your license afterwards (they used to a few months ago) so I'm learning by experience. I know I can pass the written test easily but I'm kinda worried about the road test.. Especially considering there's a month wait time right now
