I had a Yamaha Virago 1000 back in the late 80’s which was Carbureted. I used to crank it at 6 am every morning after work and let her warm up for about 10 good minutes before my morning rides. Always ran like a top after warmup. Great videos with your son. 👍

Big John, excellent father/son time imparting your experience along to Cam. Glad you’re contemplating attending a class with Lt. Rob and get those slow- speed skills down pat. His methods are no doubt some of the best out there and his mannerisms and care in helping folks obtain those skills is fantastic. Good job Cam!

I had a 97 100 Shadow ace and Shadows are cold natured sometimes you have to choke it for a bit but not long. That is actually an enriched not a choke . You don’t want to wash out the rings.😎

You're teaching him right, John. Good work. Don't forget to change the engine coolant as well. Those low bars look uncomfortable for him. Sounds like the clutch needs to be adjusted to engage sooner. Great video.👍🏾

Great video, John. You're doing it right. Build up the skills in a safe environment. Progress to being comfortable and capable, then move to the next challenge. Parking lot, then neighborhood streets, then main drags, then brief highway, one or two exits, get off on backroads then go back around an exit or 2. Once he's comfortable add more exits. No Parkway or Turnpike for 2 seasons. Rob will do wonders for him too. An added bonus is the time you'll share together getting him up to road riding. In a few years you can look forward to all the road trips together. Your an amazing Dad. And an obviously proud one too. Great Job Cam. Dad knows what he's talking about, trust in him, you can't go wrong. Be safe brothers.

I agree with the seafoam, those carbs can be a pain to take off and put back. My 99 shadow 750 doesn't need choke unless it's colder than 60° or so and after about a minute warming up runs wonderful

The spark plugs will tell you what is going on inside of the engine... proper timing, blowby and air/fuel ratio. also, check the fuel filter. I would run a can of Seafoam in the tank to clean out the carb. Proud father :-)

I had a bike once that ran perfect all the time. Except when it was first started either first time of the day or the 10th time of the day after it cooled down for awhile. I always had to let it idle for approx 3-4 minutes to get the engine temp up some. If I would crank it up and start out a driveway, parking lot etc and did not let it warm up it would run just fine until I put it in a lean to turn onto the street and it would stumble. So when on a big bike and your going slow in a lean and it stumbles for a second it’s like that bike is going down. And it would only do this once after each start up in a lean if not warmed up.

Maybe install a carburetor Dynojet kit on the Shadow. If anything, at least a good carburetor cleaning by taking it apart and cleaning all of it. Awesome video as well. Really cool to see you and your son bonding and the fact that you both enjoy riding. Give him time and he will become a great rider. He has a great teacher.

Probably just need to clean the carbs. Before I sold my Ninja I had to clean the carbs because I didn't ride it much and the gas might have went bad. I took the loss from the sale.

Awesome series of videos with your son. Going to be a few years before I can start teaching my son to ride but I’m looking forward to it. With regards to the carb sounds like it needs a good cleaning and tune or possible replacement. A well tuned carb should start and maintain idle even in the cold but unlike EFI will need to warm up more to run optimally

I sold my 2007 Honda Shadow Spirit C2 (pretty much the same bike) last year after buying my 2022 Road Glide. That Honda was a fantastic motorcycle! Mine didn't much like cold start ups either. Pay attention to the fuel petcock getting gummed up and it's vacuum diaphragm failing causing it to piss fuel out the weep hole. I put a jet kit in the carb and it ran great! Rode that bike to work every single day for about 6 years and 44000 miles.. You'll see many miles on that Honda

John, your son needs to turn his head and look through the turns. He's just looking at his front bumper or what's right what is in front of him. Look to where you want the bike to go.
