to summarize the first clip - the cyclist did everything they'd pitch a fit over a motorist doing to them. the other noteworthy one was the kid wheelying down a sidewalk (pavement) and trying to bunny hop through a van that had been clearly signaling a left turn. and the moral of that story is, motorists are required to drive with care for vulnerable road users, but it's impossible for motorists to protect them from themselves.

It looks to me that the cyclist doesn't understand the meaning of the blue 'shared path' sign on the lamp post - it clearly indicates that it is a *shared* path and not a *segregated* path. I wonder if the cyclist also assumed that cycle symbol painted on the path meant that it was solely a cycle path and not a shared path.

@@frenchdave69 yep, it’s a poorly signed cycle track and no matter the layout, this rider was being a nob. It’s outside the tomorrow building in Salford. I had a gander on street view and there are advisory “cyclists dismount “ signs at a traffic light controlled crossing that you can legally cycle over! Yeah, that BMX kid, must think he lives in a consequence free environment, and other people are going to make everything safe for him. I see it too often from all road users, they think if they encroach, put themselves in danger, everyone will fix their problems, and 99% of the time they are right. It's the 1% they need to worry about.

Giving space, priority and extra consideration to pedestrians (when cycling) is very fulfilling to me. A smile, a nod, a wave and a thank you. It's quite personal, and you make not only someone else´s day better, but also you own. I'm not in that place with drivers though. The fact that if you make a mistake you kill me, and if I make one you also kill me is not a good starting point for a good relationship.

Glad to have the update on the last clip with the extra info. I did think passing where he did could be ok, you really have to be extra aware of the pedestrians and for signs that the driver might not have seen you. Doing it for the right reasons is important too; not to show off but because you want to make better progress. The risk has to be worth the reward.

I'm registered blind (having some vision) and am now in my 50s. I would say that over the past 15 to 20 years cyclists have caused me the most issues through inconsideration and misuse of foot paths and junctions. There seems to be a general lack of regard and perhaps an increasing attitude of self righteousness by a lot of cyclists. I think if the apparent trend increases cyclists may find themselves the focus of legislation, and I think that would be a shame.
@shm5547
@shm5547 Жыл бұрын
That’s a shame to hear you’ve had problems. Of course cycling on foot paths is perfectly legal unless there is a red circle sign prohibiting it. Cyclists are already subject to legislation for riding on footways, but if done carefully, the police guidelines allow it. I would suggest a body camera, just as cyclists use bike cameras, so you can report these issues. As a cyclist, I always ride carefully around pedestrians, however I have noticed a growing number of inconsiderate pedestrians who are ignorant of their duty to be aware of their environment and not impede cyclists (rule 13). But there is no legislation for this, until the worst happens such as the Auriol Grey case. I can see pedestrians having greater legislation applied to them in the wake of that case.

The law only teniously prohibits cycling on a footway; it doesn't mention bicycles at all (in fact, the law is so old it pre-dates the existence of bicycles!). It was originally designed to keep horse drawn carriages and sledges off the footway. As it's worded, it would also prohibit pulling a child along the pavement in a sledge on a snowy day!

A couple of points for you to expand on 1:42 - if that had been a pedestrian and not a cyclist were would you expect them to be walking on that road with no path (please don't say the grass verge as there could be mud or holes there) 3:50 - could you highlight the problems created by not regularly changing wiper blades 4:08 - the cyclist is riding, all be it slowly, correctly away from the door zone. A beep would be, quite correctly, taken as impatience from the driver. 4:54 - if the dash cam in that lorry is positioned in the centre of the windscreen, then that is not good space and distance. 6:19 - a good example of why advance stop zone should be created at all traffic lights, particularly those with filter lights.

1:42 on the other side of the road to the left of the painted white line, as soon as there is a chance to cross. 3:50 it is important to have working wiper blades for good visibility in rain. 4:08 a few pedal strokes to get 'er up to speed wouldn't go amiss. 4:54 it's hard to see where the left of the lorry is and it's also important not to tuck back in too soon lest the back end of the trailer gets dangerously close to them. 6:19 they'd be better off in the right hand lane so that people turning left can go.

I'm seriously appalled at that cyclist coming up the inside of the HGV on the roundabout. How much more must HGV driver have to endure to protect these people with death wishes. In the years HGV drivers have had Proximity sensors fitted down the nearside of the vehicle to create an audio warning when cyclists come down the near side, which constantly beeps when manoeuvring in tight spaces, which is utterly annoying! Then we have nearside cameras, with a monitor on the dash board, which lights up the cab at night the second you indicate left, even on a motorway. Then we have these ridiculous warning alarms that shout "CAUTION! VEHICLE TURNING LEFT!" when you indicate left. Next fleet of trucks we get will now have windows carved into the doors to add to the drivers responsibility to check, like six mirrors and a monitor isn't enough, while various alarms are skreetching in your ears! What point to we say to suicidal cyclists, Right....take some responsibility for yourselves? Honestly! What next are they going to force onto HGV drivers to protect these cyclists? That guy on that bike is despicable!

Regarding the cyclist hitting the turning van. The footpath was quiet high, and had a curve I think, can be difficult to see, because the cyclist was coming quiet fast, and the cyclist would have been quiet far back when he was in line of sight for the side mirror, after the turn had began surely the line of sight for the driver would have changed. Plus, lot of drivers are obsessed with getting the door handles fully within view, which can also limit the side viewing area. If it helps their driving, it's ok, I suppose. Ultimately everyone, including cyclists, and pedestrians much play their part in creating safe road environment.

First clip, that clearly used to be a segregated path with a line separating cyclists & pedestrians, I'm wondering if the cyclist hasn't mentally adjusted to the change of sign and (incomplete) removal of the line. He'd have still been in the wrong acting as he did even with a segregated path & pedestrian in the "wrong" side of it, but that could go some way towards explaining why he thought he was justified in shouting. It's not any cyclist's (or driver's) place to try to police the actions of others & this could very obviously have been two people passing with no incident or interaction at all had the cyclist had a different attitude.

Spot on. Most, not all, of the people riding bikes in these films are not cyclists. I realise that sounds pompous but you know what I mean. The majority of cyclists who do it as a regular hobby and often ride more miles in a year than many people drive, take a pride in their use of the road, their bike/appearance and their consideration for other road users. But drivers tend to remember the red light jumping, misuse of junctions, wheelies et al, and then we're all tarred with the same shitty brush.

I think the cyclist probably thought that the different surfaces on the footway (there are clear light and dark areas) represented the demarcation between a cycle lane and a footpath. Rathwr than it being a shared use footway. He's made an error. But, as there are no legal standards for signage and marking on footways, it is a mistake which is very easy to make as there is no commonality in what does or does not indicate a seperate cycle lane and delimit its boundry. The problem here is, a lack of standards and legislation. The law literally states, that there is no requirement to have any signage in the footway at all. This needs to change and universal markings (as with the carriageway) need to be adopted. I understand his initial confusion, but a little more observation and he would have spotted the sign on the post, which does indicate that it is a mixed/shared use footway.

Yet cyclists (the faster breed) insist on using the road I guess to avoid the slower recreational riders etc. It was put there to avoid accidents as its not the widest of roads and a 40 limit but regularly exceeded to the former 60 and probably beyond. I use it regularly on motorbike and in car, and even traverse the cycle way on it with my son, and walk it sometimes! Always drivers being held back and getting annoyed at the cycle bikes. Superficially a helmet law makes sense, but it just… doesn’t seem to work: - New Zealand introduced a helmet law. What they observed is: (1) somehow a lot of people stopped cycling around that time, and (2) despite helmet use going up to almost 100%, there was no noticeable drop in head injury. - Cycling is roughly as dangerous as walking, when it comes to head injuries. The fact that nobody is calling for a pedestrian helmet law should raise a red flag. - It is estimated that cycling in New Zealand (with a helmat law) is 10 to 15 times more dangerous than in the Netherlands (without helmet law). (appx. 0.15 vs 0.012 deaths per million km). So compared to other things, helmets have only a tiny effect. And if you want to get people to wear bike helmets, you have to convince them that cycling is dangerous enough to warrant wearing a helmet. However *the normal response to the message that something is dangerous is to stop doing it*. If a lot of people switch from cycling to driving cars, that will increase risk for cyclists (and pedestrians) since cars are more dangerous than bicycles. (In places like the Netherlands, where a lot of short trips within a city are done on a bike, it would also have a horrible effect on traffic congestion.)

At least if a motorbike were crazy enough to overtake there people would have heard them. With that many people, and many of them kids, by each side of the road! The cars may have to move out. The cars will not expect a cyclist to be in that gap. They will be keeping an eye on the crowd to the left to see if anyone steps out. Any collision with the cycle could send the cars veering back into the crowd. This is not rocket science. It's not about how much the cyclist could see. It's what happens with the crowd, which he cannot predict, and what the drivers are aware of. I hope he does accept he made a mistake there. I know we all make the odd stupid one - I still do. The kid could be hit by the cycle and kid and/or cyclist could be under the wheels in an instant. Then there is what could happen at the other side causing a car to move out to give more room and into the cyclist he did not expect/know was there.

We're meant to give whole lanes to cyclists now, not just 1.5 metres?

There was no need and in this situation it would have been possibly more dangerous.

There are cyclists and those who ride cycles, the latter don’t know or follow the rules and cause the most danger AND are usually easy to spot, ,give them a wide berth

And we as a society should be aiming to increase the number of people riding bikes, not the number of cyclists. Riding a bike to get somewhere should be as easy and comfortable as walking and the UK is so far away from that...

So the guy exploited KZbin's silly copyright system because he didn't like what you said about his video? It's a shame KZbin aren't aware that he was the one who sent you the video for you to use, lol.

Not at all, and he made some fair points. The copyright was fuelled by a certain group on Twitter who want me silenced.

This is CykelTony above. He is the one who complained to the DVSA that I was anti-cyclist. He said I was targeting Cyclists on social media.

@@AshleyNeal-JustCycling That's worse then, because KZbin should ask them to prove that the "copyrighted" video belongs to them.

@@AntonyE-iq5ee I think Ashley has learnt loads from cycling himself and his interactions with his audience. It's a credit to him that he can hold his hand up to errors of analysis and that experienced cyclists such as myself can learn from his roadcraft teaching. Ashley and I have had a few debates in the KZbin comments and found good common ground.

@@AntonyE-iq5ee But the clip owners send their clips to Ashley, thereby giving him permission to use the clips in his videos. Seems like he exploited the system. Having done some research you strike me as a wannabe Jeremy Vine-type bellend who can barely get any social media engagement.
