@@trevordavies5793 watch out it isn't two junctions..... I have a funny part "roundabout" part "junction" junction on my way to work and the "furthest set" isn't related to the nearest set. I ALWAYS look at the lights nearest to the line and BOTH left and right lights.

As a regular scooter rider in London (with Cat A licence), this is very interesting. Particularly the last clip. I often find myself in those situations and my golden rule is always abort if the car has an opportunity to move, either because the lights change or a gap opens up in front. I assume they would not check their mirrors before moving. The other consideration is how much loose gravel is often in that part of the road which makes it dangerous to stop quickly.

A sound policy. Assume utter incompetence from everyone around you, and expect the worst. You might get somewhere 5 minutes later, but you get there.

I see this a lot in London especially delivery riders. Had a few riders cut in front of me within a second before a traffic island. I reported one for doing this with the reg so clearly seen on camera which shows how close he was. Yet to hear back though my reason for reporting is so they hopefully have an eye opener of their riding and safety

Not a biker but the busy roundabout at 3:23 looks like it would be absolute hell as a rider. The same problems a car has with pulling out, plus it being blindspots galore when on a bike, can imagine this being quite a tense situation on a motorcycle

They can be lethal, always avoid them, if you have to go over them, only in a straight line, coasting, no pedalling. No power lets you recover easier if anything goes wrong

Anything metal be careful with. I was once cycling through a junction with light snow cover and didn't realise there was a big metal solid cover on the floor, the type you get for telecoms or utilities. My bike just slid out from under me completely and I ended up in the middle of the road like a lemon. Fortunately other road users were paying attention and gave me all the time I needed to collect myself and my bike and get myself back up and running again. A really dangerous place to put a metal covering like that since it's in the perfect line for 2 wheeled vehicles to corner. I've seen other covers with grip on top of them to help. Unfortunately the council didn't even reply to my email about it.

Totally…Yet this has not be learned by later gens. We see typically 3 out of 5 walkers now walking with the traffic direction…maybe too scared to face cars and would rather risk being hit from behind, denying themselves the chance jump out of the way…idiots! Worse still….even at night. Lunacy.

7:40 I suspect we've all caught a green light in the correct bit of out peripheral vision for it to be _our_ green, started to go, and then stopped as we realised that we'd mistaken a filter light for _our_ light. I've adopted a little invariable routine that makes this mistake harder to make. I now treat red+amber as an explicit cue to take left and right mirror observations - left mirror, right mirror, explicitly look back at lights again to wait for the green. If I caught the amber in peripheral vision then the look back at the proper lights to wait for the green it reveals a red, the mistake is realised and I haven't moved, just done a couple of extra observations and got into gear.

This kind of occurrence always has me wondering why this country has never adopted arrows in the red and amber lights, as well green, to emphasise the direction the stop lights pertain to.

@@ncc13701 Oh, you do see red and amber arrows in some places in the UK and I agree they are a sound idea. My suspicion is that most people make 'wrong light' errors on filter lights by reacting to peripheral vision and a red circular light and red arrow in peripheral vision look pretty much the same so they don't help with that particular class of error.

As a biker that last one made me wince 😬. You can see the biker apologising right away and acknowledging his mistake though. And yes, London buses seem to hate us bikers… had one try to force me into construction hoarding whilst he undertook…

To be fair, most of the bus drivers I've come across have been quite friendly, though that may be my luck (there have been some "unfriendly" ones, but they're on the rarer side). Someone else pointed out that the first bus clip was more likely the driver wanting to get as close to the stop as they can to let people off (and potentially let others on), rather than deliberately trying to make the cammer's life harder, and I think I'd accept that interpretation...

As a motorist I've tried to look into what bikes are actually supposed to do when filtering so that I know what should be happening, I've ended up not really being much wiser as online information seems to be a massive grey area. On one hand the highway code seems to say little if anything about filtering other than just do stuff safely. On the other hand I see pages of advice on filtering published by motorcycling groups that are literally saying it's probably best to break the law in many situations as you're unlikely to get in trouble for it. Comments on online clips tend to fall into two categories, either 'bloody bikes are a menace to everybody' or 'I'm a biker I can do anything I want, whenever I want, and call it filtering and it's fine'. My issue with filtering (as a motorist) is bikes that are effectively just overtaking a lane of cars waiting at a junction with nowhere to actually move back into the lane they are supposedly in. Cars start coming the other way and they are stuck obstructing oncoming traffic or have to turn at right angles and pull into a 3ft gap between two cars in the queue. If they do get to the front before having a problem with oncoming vehicles then they inevitably don't have a gap so they pull into the bicycle stop area while waiting for the light to change. (This is one of the things a lot of the motorcycling pages advocate doing!)

@@mattc3581 well, the answers are clearly there in the highway code (and I follow this as a biker). Things like must not cause other road users to take evasive action (your example of filtering toward oncoming traffic), or you must not enter a cycle box in a motor vehicle. Clear as day. That and many aspects of driving are moderated simply by ordering they not be careless or reckless. What some will try to get away with is up to them!

@@aps-pictures9335 Fair enough, as I say there are a lot of bikers about that seem to be happy that it's OK to do anything they can get away with, and given there isn't much enforcement that means more or less anything they want. Engine powered bikes using the pavement is rampant, but increasingly seeing full on motorbikes just passing traffic by zooming up the pavement, which is a little scary as a parent.

0:38 the driver was just fiddling with the different modes in the car Eco…no Normal…nah Sport…possibly Boat…now that’s the mode for me 😁 Seriously though, couldn’t agree more. If the car isn’t handling / riding right then get it checked. Last thing you want is a spring snapping or ball joint popping at any speed along the road. I had a rear shock nut come loose after the shock was replaced and the car rode similar to that until I could pull over and fix

I am always conscious of leaving room for filtering bikes when queuing in traffic. I know it is the responsibility of the rider to make sure they have space but when the queue is 2 miles long (yes, happened a few days ago when our dual carriageway was closed and everyone headed onto the local roads) it can be difficult for riders. That extra space can either be used to move over and help or if large enough can be used by the rider to pull in When I drove in London it was a common theme to block as much as possible and generally be a pain, like the turning vehicle yielding to pedestrians (not initially but after being beeped). And that minibus confirms that Elephant and Castle is still a free for all with no regard for anyone 🤷🏻‍♂️

Loved all those, even the light mistake because it was clear he observed for traffic especially the cyclist as he moved off. The last however was a big mistake, I always pick drop back in behind the lead vehicle leading up to a pinch point or at lights. Doing this makes it easier to control the situation behind you as you have the lead vehicle providing an assist.

3:24 is called the Scilly Isles Junction! The lane markings are horrible for cars like that black Mercedes. Initially two lanes straight on, so they would be correct if it was just a normal roundabout. Because it is a roundabout with a semi-about stuck onto it, the straight on arrows are only for the semi-about. Traffic lights would seem like a sensible option, while keeping the westbound through lane.

Rear shocks gone on that bmw. Probably the most important part of a car for safety as they keep the tyres in contact with the ground so you can brake. No good having good brakes and tyres if the wheels aren’t in contact with the road due to bouncing

I had to ride into South East London a few days ago during the morning rush, along one of the main commuter routes from North Kent. Although my destination was still 9 miles from the centre of the City, the traffic density (combined with the inevitable road works) was enough to make me glad that it was a one-off. I'm an experienced rider (50 years since I passed my test), but if I had to do all that filtering every day, I'm sure my luck would run out before long.

Good rider, generally good skills - it's nice to see one of us represented on youtube that isn't riding like a tool and blaming others for their mistakes or things they could have easily avoided. A couple of mistakes but we all make them and can all, always improve. A few times he could have easily gotten into a battle of wills as he was in the right but he took the sensible and "I want to get home alive approach" every time.

When I had rear shocks replaced on my Fiat Panda 2020, Fiat garage carried out free car health safety check. Mini mot. Replaced front lower control arms & ball joints too, after safety check revealed freeplay in them.

When will people realise that motorcycles, in contrary to pushbikes, do NOT hold up traffic when filtering as they are quickly off the line and thus don't hinder the progress of cars. This is why here in Spain at some traffic lights we have a space reserved for motorbikes. IMHO motorbikes should be permitted to use the pushbike space at the light anyway. The MachE's behaviour and similar I find quite common now from EV drivers, there seems to be a certain "get out of my way, I am eco friendly" entitlement attached to the thinking of too many of them....

Apparently, initially, motorcycles were permitted to use the ASLs, but there were a number of motorcyclist fatalities, which lead to that being changed... Mind you, with how frequently motorcycles use them anyway, and that it doesn't seem like there are many incidents...

3:23 This is the Scilly Isles roundabout in Esher. I have the misfortune of using this roundabout regularly and can confirm that the cammer would have found an opportunity to enter the roundabout safer had they given it an extra 10 seconds. The black merc was sort of in the wrong lane, they did not go against any signs or road markings but it is unusual for cars to take that exit from that lane. Personally, I keep my distance from everyone else on that roundabout particularly as those unfamiliar with the unusual (and poorly signed) layout might get tripped up.

I checked on Google maps 51.37894880188692, -0.34798888243544246 - the lane is marked up for straight over, though the layout is pretty messed up - whoever signed off on that development needs their head examined.

Agreed, it's a very bad layout and I've often seen vehicles coming up the A309 in the outside lane and turning left towards Hinchley Wood from the outside lane, same as that Black card did, and often not indicating until the last minute. It's a very poor layout that could be assisted by having left and right arrows at that middle junction, same as they have on all 4 lanes coming the other way from Esher. I stay in the left lane but often indicate right, even if I'm turning left, to wrong-foot the queue jumpers, or if it's really busy then I use the right lane all the way but I go around the roundabout.

@@sailingshipp Interesting stuff, I have to agree there should be more lane markings and signage on approach. Or perhaps they could make it one large roundabout to keep things understandable (or would that disrupt traffic flow?). A pet hate of mine is those that enter the roundabout in the left lane coming from Hinchley Wood, intending to turn right onto the A309 towards Hampton Court without indicating. Or those that intend to take that exit from lane 2 and dart across at the last minute.

Reminds me of riding around that there London when I was doing courier work. You have to have eyes everywhere, and realise that people will take chances when offered. A couple of bus/minibus drivers in there need to spread the Marmite a bit thinner. Their driving was properly salty. 7:38 I've always thought the Americans have filtering traffic lights sorted by having the red and amber as an arrow as well as the green. Far less likelihood of setting off by mistake.

Loads to be gained by filtering but it is risky, play the long game and be patient for many years of safe motorcycling. The riskiest time is when arriving at the back of a long queue, drivers panic and swing u-turns without checking mirrors. Next riskiest is in-town queues, drivers crossing waiting traffic don't look for filtering cycles.

Biker does a great job of keeping himself safe right until that last clip. Look we all get stuff wrong from time to time like that green light. I think he'd committed to that manoeuvre in the last clip and then the car started moving off. He was lucky but if he'd braked most likely he'd have lost it. Definitely needs to learn from that one, next time might be tragic. Some of the others in the video are also shocking like the bus driving in the cycle lane and that moped, wow But that happens a lot in london and is a big issue for them and others.

The BMW rear end bouncing is 100% both shock absorbers have failed & the driver would certainly feel it , I’ve been in a car that did just that & the driver didn’t realise what the cause was till I explained & that it’s a straight forward job to sort out which it was , like a new car once they were replaced but u get that not everyone is car problem aware or mechanically minded 😊

Plus, having bikes move down means they aren't part of traffic. Quite often, I'll decide to filter down traffic only because it would help someone else (e.g. allows someone to come out, or to not get stuck in a junction, especially a box junction). In one case, I effectively *had* to move down, otherwise a jam that got created by the opposite lane getting blocked by a van further down (such that the traffic light junction ahead got blocked in turn) would not have cleared, and I initially wanted to stay where I was...

I'm guessing from the bike the rider is quite young or not too experienced on motorcycles but their riding is mostly really good and a lot better than many bikers I see on the road. They could do better time life savers thought. Like 5:49 they do a life saver but don't move out until 5 seconds later, by then another cyclist could have come off of the pavement and be over taking you, pedestrian could be there etc Also an Audi and a range rover doing the right thing in one video? I do like the range rovers revenge, still so sad people don't know the rules regarding pedestrians crossing at junctions.

If you filter past cars and there is space to move back in to a gap ( back to position2) it's often better to do that rather than hanging in 3 or beyond in hopes of getting further, if you sray out often the car behind will undertake in same lane. It's not total nastiness I don't think it's just that in their mind you've set the president for what is safe space and not being bikers / cyclists they don't fully see difference of you going forward through gap and them going forward that close to you. It might almost seen rude but it's not it's decisive and they know the score ....if safe a wave can help

The second you move back, the filtering becomes an overtake and is easily seen as jumping the queue, thus potentially triggering other motorists.

@@deterligegyldigt Thanks for comment. Filtering is jumping the queue to some extent. We sit out in the cold and rain and take extra risk but in return we get to jump the queue (filter) if its done safely and legally. So if safe keep filtering obviously but it's ok to do it in bits a pieces hopping back to position 2 (ish) when the way is blocked. I here what your saying about triggering, Im glad to say i don't ride in london (if some of the crazy vids are anything to go by) its ok up here in Edinburgh to nip back in for safety while the gap is blocked then back on with the filtering when its safe. A little wave of thanks/sorry (or whatever) to the car behind while you wait for a safe filtering gap can help. Ride safe 🙂

3:30 Black Merc was not in the wrong lane IMHO. It came from A309 which has straight on arrows in both lanes so both lanes can use the A309 exit. Bike is on the A307 which also has straight on arrows in both lanes so both can use the A307 exit. As you say you must give way to both lanes which the bike failed to do; quite frankly though it's a pretty safe junction because nobody's quite sure where anyone else is going so they go slow and just swear at each other.

The white Serco van, ahead of the police, starting round 2:50, didn't do a very good job with their driving. The Serco driver had at least 6 months to notice the police car approaching. The cyclist however had definitely eaten his Weetabix that morning. The quality of some of the driving is absolutely shocking.

Honestly, I think these types of videos are the reason that I have never intended on riding a scooter, bike or anything of that nature. Genuinely scares me the number of people who either (a) saw the rider and didn't care or (b) didn't see them because they were too busy hood-watching.

There's a road hump near where I live where no matter what car you're in they replicate that BMW move. I should know, I've been over it in my old Mondeo, several vans and my current car; and when it first happened I did wonder if the Mondeo's suspension was at fault, but even this car did it when brand new and as I say, several of our works vans; it's just a weirdly designed road bump.

In that last clip there was clearly not enough space. There's also the risk that the driver on the left suddenly realises they want to turn right and doesn't check their blind spot. Overtaking at junctions really is upping the risk factor.

Good set of clips, Ash. And your viewers being skilled and sensible - except the final clip motorcyclist. I make it about 27 incidents in the video for Operation SNAP (I lost count). I'm not sure what the police car was playing at ,and I would love to knpw. The scooterererer at 4:00 is being sensible - small wheels need a smooth surface at slow speed, even thought it may not be legal yet as the Govt still have to put the correct regulation in place. I have more hope with this new Government. The division of the pavement there into 3 with a mobility track only suited for unicycles is crazy; minimum separation from the carriageway can be zero at 30mph limit so it does not have to be so, and narrower traffic lanes plus a stepped mobility track may be indicated. Time for a redesign ! I quite like the RR stopping at the turn at to let the pedestrian cross, in a way that prevents anyone interfering with the pedestrian's safety at 6:52; a difficult judgement to make and imo it was correct. But, as you say, the carry-on was pushing it. I'm slightly surprised that the ped at 5:10 did not cross on the straight section where the driveway is, and went round the blind corner instead. At some time that may not end well.

1:37 there are 2 lanes going in the same direction, the car on the motorbikes right in lane 2 isn’t signalling to turn right and it’s not congested conditions, it’s free flowing traffic so the motorbike shouldn’t have undertaken the car.

Despite what I'm about to say, I would never have pushed my way through like this. With regards to the bus driver in the first clip, I don't think he was intending to bully past. There was a gap, a small one mind, due to the positive positioning of the motorcycle and the driver will have wanted to get as close to the stop as possible to allow people off. You can see his fingers on the door buttons at 0.22. So he would also be looking at the internal mirror to see people getting off and when it was safe to close the doors, hence not looking at the motorcyclist. I don't think he had any intention of passing the motorcycle.

Yeah, it may not have been necessarily wanting to bully the cammer, but more get to let people off as soon as possible. There might have even been the assumption by the bus driver that the cammer would have filtered/moved down when they could have. (Mind you, I'm somewhat biased by my experience with bus drivers being largely positive, including many being really friendly to me, there are some "not so great" ones, sure, but that's as with every group of course...)

Bouncy BMW, I once visited some friend and we all piled into their car, I sat in the back and told the driver I could feel the car wobbling so something is wrong, later when we got home his kids said to their Dad “you See, we said that that” his kids had been complaining for 6 months but he couldn’t feel it from the front. [turned out to be a bent rear wheel rim]

Classic new highway code stuff with the left-turning Range Rover. They, correctly according to new rules, wait for several pedestrians that look like they want to cross (and do) with the unfortunate effect of frustrating and confusing loads of drivers. Would it be easier, safer, more sensible, more natural, more consistent and so, better all-round for the pedestrians to wait, like they do have to in most other road use situations? Were they, at the end, "being awkward"? Or were they just, once done responding to the blown horns (which could easily have been warning of a danger) looking to continue and realised there was yet another pedestrian that the new rules obliged them to wait for? What if the pavement had been busier? Should they have continued to hold up the cars? What a mess these new rules are.

Something dodgy about that Beemer. It was MOT'd 22 Jan 2024 and there is no sign of rear shock failure on the MOT history. You wouldn't expect both rear shocks to fail in the same 6 month window. Those shocks would be a definite MOT failure.

There was a 2 day gap between the old certificate expiring and the new one being given. It could a case the driver took the car to be repaired and then MOT’d afterwards. I know a few people that will get the garage to inspect and repair before an MOT so they don’t have MOT failures on record in hope it keeps the vehicle value higher

I see a lot of BMw drivers who are poor drivers. They do recognise that badge but not much else. ( bmw badge has to do with plane propeller production in bavaria in past , hence the colours) . I met a 25 year old bmw soft top driver with a lots of hair gel who had no idea what BMw stands for..

At 5:43 I did the same thing today. Only because the road use to be two lanes and now it’s only one lane. I saw the traffic que up ahead and moved over to lane 2, however lane 2 was now for the oncoming traffic. Wtf? Both lane one and lane 2 had lane markings going straight. But now lane 2 also had the same arrow but for the opposite side. Council couldn’t even be bothered to fix it to make it less confusing. I looked like a dick moving back into lane 1 when I soon realised. I stood there in utter disbelief, not because they’ve decided to make it a one lane only road, but because they hadn’t painted the road markings!

Lane splitting, as per the example from 6:05, is dangerous and should be penalised as such. What happens if one vehicle door opens, or one driver decides to try pushing into the next lane without looking? I've seen motorcyclists leaning left then right to avoid wing mirrors passing through traffic at 60km/hr+. Not good if they lose balance!

Yup...looks like my regular commute. I recognise a few bits of it around Kentish Town/Camden. Usual stuff. Bullying vans, idiots driving buses, impatient drivers, cyclists ignoring lights and junctions, Roundabouts where it's every man for themselves, and wait..what...a well driven Audi. Knew there had to be one somewhere! The point I think was made about hte mini bus pushing through on the inside, and staying more central in the lane...well, that can help, but I think mini bus fool was going to do it anyway, and by giving him the room to be a twat put him where he was going to go with more space. In traffic, you can easily filter past him later when he gets stopped again. As for the cyclist who just pulled out in front of the bike...yup. All the time. Never occurs to them that someone else might already be doing what they are going to do. Odd that. I always look before I cut out of line to filter. Cyclists, sadly, believe they own the road and the world has a duty to keep them safe. Badly thought out laws to blame there, combined with poor enforcement of road regulations generally. Pedestrians at junctions? They have no clue what to do. I get ones stepping in front of me on straight roads expecting me to stop, ones at junctions that won;t cross even when you stop and wave them over...Why? because pedestriansd DO NOT READ THE HIGHWAY CODE. And that was about the only placethese things got put. No advertising campaign, no public awareness. And the last clip....ouch. Never aim for a closing gap. Ever. The gap BEHIND the car was the right choice. But, overall, the guy was better than a lot I see out there. Don't know how long he's been riding, but apart from that last slip ( which I like the fact that he sent it in too, along with his red light blunder) he's doing a decent job of staying as safe as you can be on the roads in London.

7:38, I am a little guilty of this but in a mild way, last week I had an idiot tailgating me on a country road so slowed down a bit to give me more time and safety distance in front. To which he got even closer, To get out of his way I signalled to pull off into a side road, but his reaction to my signal was to speed up again and literally drive right up to almost touch my rear bumper. So I very gently slowed, and slowed, and slowed again being carful so NOT to brake check him, I could have tuned off into the side road at about 30MPH but I slowed to a crawl and went around less that 10MPH. I primary though was I want time to look around the corner because I don’t want this idiot up my ar*e if there is a problem, [if I have to brake I will get rear ended] but in the back of my mind was also thinking I am going to deliberately hold you up for being an ars*hole.

The 'one lane position everywhere' is the biking equivalent of the 'one speed everywhere' car driver. Both are failures to adapt to the changes in road conditions as you move along the road. It's instructive to follow a Met trained police biker and see how exaggerated their changes in position in the lane are as they progress along the road and encounter differing hazards/visibility.

A 6.00 the biker was not filtering as said. He was in fact overtaking as he was to the offside of all traffic in his lane and indeed was at times over the central line and riding into the facing traffic in the lane coming the other way., so in the wrong lane on the wrong side of the road. Not recommended. If the police got hold of this video and could recognise him he could be prosecuted for moving traffic offences.
