In this video we explore the Galena Trail and the N&S rail trail in the West Kootenay area of British Columbia. We did it as a bike-packing trip over three days in Sep 2021. Included are details of the trail conditions and route so hopefully it will help anyone else planning to ride it. There is also a little blurb about the history of the railway in the area as I found it really interesting! (If you want to stick to riding and skip the history lesson, that goes from 6:36 to 9:48). Enjoy the ride!

My wife and I rode both those trails in Aug 2022 and we are pleased to report that the cable car crossing at Alamo Siding is up and working well. We had a blast zipping across on it. Arriving at Three Forks, we rode to Sandon on the road and then continued up past Cody on the Carlyle Lodge access road for several kms. On the way back we took the K&S Rail Trail from Sandon to Three Forks. It starts out quite easy but deteriorates as you approach the Payne Bluffs junction until it becomes a mountain bike trail dug into the side of the mountain. It is well maintained and quite rideable (in most places) but definitely demands your full and undivided attention along with intermediate or advanced mountain biking skills. Also the N&S Trail between Hills and Summit lake is a bit overgrown in a few spots but mostly very nice riding. The beaver pond diversion made for easy riding around the flooded part east of Summit Lake and the wet portions along the north side of Summit Lake shown in the video have been built up with a series of small bridges to keep you high and dry.

Well done, I lived in the area and love it. You mention Hoss at a restaurant in Nakusp , I used to drive a school bus there and he was one of the young students.

interesting. The first hydro plant in Canada was at Moodyville in 1881. Tried to find a bike path from Sandon to Kaslo high above Three Forks, all I did was badly bottom out car at Zincton. never really found trail.

Good video. I was angered at the fencing off of the trail along Summit Lake. It’s government neglect that allows landowners to cut off a public route like this. I made videos on KZbin of these trails. Search KZbin with my name & the words Bike Trails. It’s another perspective. Happy peddling.
