Удивительно что нет простой зимней куртки у меня в гардеробе, есть специальные из Декатлон (2 вида). Black ice can be scary the first few times. After a while you learn which type of weather leads to black ice and just accept that every once in a while your bike will slip away. with proper balance that only means you are suddenly standing instead of cycling.

In Romania, we can only dream about it. Our traffic code prohibits cycling on roads covered by snow and ice, so cyclists are forced to take a break in almost all winter. Bicycle fines are usually double for the same offense against the same offenses committed by drivers. In cities like Timisoara, Mayor Nicolae Robu is struggling to discourage walking or cycling by removing pedestrian crossings, narrowing the sidewalks, or building bicycle tracks on these narrow sidewalks, and the newly built infrastructure, sometimes even with European funds, is often made not to be used by wheelchair users at all. Quote from Nicolae Robu, Mayor of Timisoara: we are in the "automobile civilization". Timisoara has recently been given the right to become the European cultural capital in 2021. (Sometimes I wonder if there is anyone in the European Union leadership who can check who and how they give money for events only on slogans.

Wow, that is crazy and really stupid. Romania has a big chance to not make the mistakes that "western" cities made over the decades by prioritizing individual's cars. Sad to hear they don't use the chance. And yeah, being from Austria I also often wonder by which reasoning certain funds of the EU are distributed. I have no problem with EU countries getting money to "catch up", but what the money is used for should then also be decided by the EU and not local politicians.

It's a mentality issue most of eastern Europe shares. I am from Croatia and a good deal of people here still think bicycle is for children and any adult who accomplished anything in life will drive a car (preferably German premium brands). In Zagreb (our capital) underground garages were built in narrow city center encouraging even more people to drive cars to the city center. Bike lanes are made with a bit of yellow paint taking away space from pedestrians. They appear and disappear without any logic and go straight through bus stops. Green light for bikes and pedestrians on many busy intersections will not appear if you don't press the button and even then you will have to wait a few minutes until you get one. Watching videos on this channel feels for me like watching science fiction.

Hold your bike as upright as possible no leaning in corners, never brake, and drive as much as you can tru fresh snow, always assume the other biker\driver\pedestrian cant see you or brake. Thats what i was thought from young age. Snow has special rules

Pipo Shelves And when you hit an unexpected patch of ice...don't freak out and franticly stear trying to get off the ice cause it will make your bike tip over pinning you underneath it..you will fall hip first on the ice followed by your bike falling on to you as well. Trust me you only make that mistake once in life. If you hit a patch of ice and all of a sudden your bike turns into a zamboni...relax..don't make sudden movements but glide it out putting your feet on both sides on the ground to stabilize the bike if need be. But the patch will end soon enough...just stay calm.

Maaike, falling hip first.....I can tell you about that..... riding my bike to work I had to take a left turn on a T junction and a car coming towards me had the same idea. The car didn't slow down to let me go first, and to make things worse, the street I was driving on was clean but the street I was turning into wasn't cleared of snow/ice. Long story short, front wheel snapped away, I fell on my hip, car couldn't stop because of the ice in that street and I ended under the car with a hip fracture.... took me six weeks before I could walk and work again.

Martijn Vv Yeah cycling accidents suck. I was run over by a car myself a couple of years ago. The car stopped behind the sharks teeth and I was on the cycle path. He should have seen me, i had the right away and he stopped making me think he saw me and gave me the right away. But apparently I was in death man's corner and he didn't see me...or he wasn't paying attention or was an asshole...I don't know nor do I care really. Either way, when I was infront of the car he started the car and I went flying over the car..hihi landed on the ground like a cat trying to keep my head of the ground...so no need for helmets when you have instincts. All my leg and arm muscles stretched too far and got torn...I couldn't cycle for about a year. But my bike looked like the letter S so I had to wait to get my bike fixed anyways. Ohh well shit happens. I'm a dutch woman, its not like its gonna stop me from getting on my bike again. Birds gotta fly, fish gotta swim, dutchy gotta cycle. 😉😁

You would not want to travel by bike here in New Zealand. We are not used to bikes on the road and the odd one you see takes their life in their own hands, so dangerous. I like the way your cars are so careful! Wow!

Cardrivers HAVE to be very carefull over here in Holland, even if a biker drives the wrong way, through a red light or what ever; if a car hits it, cardriver is fully responsible for ALL the damage made.

If a car hits a cyclist, no matter if the cyclist is the one 'wrong' it's Always the car driver who's to blame. Sounds weird, but that's to force car drivers to drive very carefully near cyclists, especially children.

Dutch car drivers are fully aware of cyclist, because most are cyclists themselves. The newer traffic laws (car drivers are equal to cyclists) has also changed the behaviour of car drivers. But it isn't true that cyclist in the wrong never gets the blame. The point is, that car drivers have to prove the cyclists wrong doing, which is difficult to do. But for the law, a car driver must take account of cyclists running a red light or not indicating direction.

I take hat off to these cyclists riding in the snow. Not many Brits would do this. I like the idea of the little windscreens on a couple of the bikes. Some of the bikes look difficult to ride with high up handlebars though.

High up handlebars are actually easier and more comfortable. Allows you to sit up straight, easier to look around, better weight balance, easier to steer with one hand, carry stuff etc. It just takes a little to get used to perhaps. Also when it's slippery, sitting up that straight usually means when you slip/fall you'll just end up standing on your feet.

Well yeah, those bikes aren't build for speed. They're very comfortable to pedal normal speeds, but take more effort to go fast. Ofcourse sitting up straight you catch more wind too.

I had no idea it was done or was even possible. Do you switch tyres in winter? When you depress the brakes do the tyres grip? Certainly people must experience more falls.

More falls, probably, yes... But not that many more, I think. Also, some people might take the car or have their partners drop them off. Most people use the same tyres all year round, maybe some cycle enthousiasts change them? I don't know. Most bikes here use wide tyres anyway, not the thin road bike ones. But this winter was unusual in that the snow kept falling; normally, once the roads and bikepaths are cleared you can almost ride like you would normally do. I do make sure to leave somewhat earlier, as sometimes there are still slippery areas so I reduce my speed somewhat. Not that many people ride very fast in the Netherlands anyway. If there is still snow on the ground, I make sure to keep upright as much as possible and reduce speed so I don't have to brake hard (which can indeed be a bit risky). It also means I have more time to react if I do start to slip. A little bit of rear wheel slippage is not a problem if you keep upright, but if you feel your bike starts slipping away from under you, it's time to put your feet down. Also, relaxing your body helps in keeping balance. I'm almost 50 years old and have been cycling since I was maybe around 5 or 6. I can only remember two snow/ice related incidents. Once, as a teenager on my way to school my bike slipped away, but since I was actually too tall for that bike I put my feet down and stayed upright while the bike fell down. I did fall down twice trying to pick the bike up, since the cobble stones were so slippery that I had to crawl towards the sidewalk, dragging my bike behind me. Only on the sidewalk was I able to get upright and pick up my bike. And a number of years ago, the cycle path had been cleared but some slippery patch remained right around a corner. The bike slipped away and I ended unharmed but flat on my back, sliding over the ice. That one could have been worse. When during the day people cycle in the snow and then the snow freezes overnight, that's the most dangerous part. The tracks form frozen ridges that can "capture" your front wheel. But almost always the cycle paths have been cleared the day before so most frozen snow is on the edges, leaving a nice clean area to ride.

People just keep on using their regular bike. They'll only change their tyres if they're totally worn down and you'd change them anyways. As a kid you might fall a few times, but you'll learn to adjust your speed and anticipate the circumstances. only the e pedelecs, and roadbikers/mountainbikers wear helmets, and kids sometimes because their parents force them, i find the helmet uneccesary when not doing a roadbiking trip but just a normal comute, it looks silly, and you usually don't have that much speed on a comute, when roadbiking, i recommend wearing a helmet tough

You mean car traffic ? Well that depends on the city size. Big city, much cars. Small city less cars. Simple. It also helps a lot that most city's have a supermarket within "bike distance" like 1 or 2 miles from your home. So much faster to go by bike then by car for the daily fresh groceries.

Fatbikes are not common in Netherland during winter time? Here in Canada especially in my city snow is mostly deep when winter comes so I ride my Fatbike with a 26x4.0 tires.It's easy to pedal it even in deep snow. Skinny tire bikes are hard to pedal in deep snow.

also, it's fine when the snow is still fresh and crackly, when it's run down and flattened into ice, that's when you really need the salt, but they're very preventive with the salt on important roads we don't really bother bringing out a different bike for different purpose except the odd mountainbiker and a couple more race bikes, for commuting we just use the all-purpose steel horse.

I have kept my children at home today, my city didn't do anything about the snow on the roads so it was to dangerous to send them to school. (on a bike) I live near Utrecht and we have about 15 cm (6 inch) of snow on the roads, biggest problem was/is the ice underneath.

I'm an all-year cyclist (in Austria), but I'd never drive with those narrow tires through snow. I had to do that one winter on a replacement bike, because my "decent" bike was stolen, and cycling was so much more tiring. Never again, mountain bike tires FTW! ;)

Even in the snow some people think it is a good idea to hold an umbrella while cycling. Why?! You miss one hand on your steering wheel and carry an object which can bring you out of balance with windy weather. And lastly, you are blocking your own view. Slightly better. Still no reason to put, practically a sail, at the front of the bike which won't even protect you adequately. The amount of times rain pours straight down when i'm riding a bike is next to zero. Put on rainwear which also has reflecting elements for visibility. A little less charming? Maybe. But better vision, protection, visibility and flexibility.
