Hello everyone! In this video I continue the Pyeonghwa Nuri Bike Path (평화누리자전거길) which follows the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) between South and North Korea. I start today’s ride at Haengju-daegyo (행주대교), which is the start of course 3. The beginning of the ride was mostly industrial, without many views, until I pass Paju Publishing City (파주출판도시), when I started heading into the mountains into some tourist areas that have been around for a while. I ended up seeing a ton of military facilities, and then I ended up at Munsan-eub (문산읍), a fairly big city just 8 km away from the North Korean border, where I found a place to camp at Jangsan Mountain Lookout (장산전망대).

Thanks so much @see8331! The Korean countryside is really beautiful for how small of a country it is. It blew me away when I first got here!

Love this! I spent two weeks in a small tent somewhere near Paju when I got my Expert Field Medical Badge in 92. That involved lots of combat medic & soldiering stuff, capped off with a 12-mile march that you have to complete in 3 hours. The first week was a practice run, the second week the real deal. One of the tasks was land navigation: a solo day-run and a partnered night-run. The day that I did the test run for the day nav was one of my most memorable in Korea. The points were set up around the countryside, so I was wandering through rice fields, defensive fortifications (there was a long wall though the fields with small bunker/watchtowers spaced across it), small villages... it was pretty amazing. Villagers and farmers would wave and greet me as I passed. In the towns outside the US Army installations, most people were indifferent, and you'd sometimes encounter young anti-American hotheads, but the old folk in the country were always friendly and welcoming. On my way through one field, a stooped old man waved me over from the edge of a nearby village. As I walked over, he ducked into one of the old shacks and came out with a bottle of 막걸리 and two bowls. He had a small pen with two cows in it. We leaned against the railing and drank the whole bottle. Best 막걸리 I've ever had!

Thanks so much Mike! Also thanks for sharing your amazing stories! Those tasks you had to do sound really intense! You must have some great memories from back then, and I can't imagine some of the reactions you got as an American wandering around the countryside! It's a really interesting area up there by Paju. I thought it would be a bit more "city-like," but it feels like a lot of the areas that I've seen in the middle of the country. Definitely spoiled by Korea's diversity in such a small country!

Nice exploration Matt! I like getting lost when there isn't a rigid timeline.... Oh how things have changed! in the first couple of minutes you said "cycling is a very popular hobby in Korea"... Back in the day when I first went to Korea I brought my bike with me. I saw NO ONE riding bikes, except little children in courtyards and parks OR mountain bike clubs that you only saw deep in the mountain. Bike shops were sparse and very small. Whenever I took my bike out for ride through parts of the city people would look at me like I was nuts --> 6'4" foreigner weaving in and out of traffic (no bike paths to speak of... not a priority). I love what they've done with the country! Such massive changes in infrastructure and mindset. Keep up the good work!

Thanks a lot Alex! Wow that's interesting to hear about the cycling culture here! They must have invested a lot into the infrastructure to get people riding, because there are so many cyclists these days, and a lot of them are very passionate too! If you are ever curious (and you have a FB account) I'd check out the Korea Cycling Community on Facebook facebook.com/groups/188919411703366. It's very active and it's cool to see just what people are up to and where they are going.

Plus Mart used to be the mainstay on Ganghwa, at least three of them here. Only game in town, no reinvestmet, now all old and dated. NH Hanaro mart has built a couple new stores here and are now giving them a serious run for the money. Enjoyed your video, haven't been up Munsan way in 40+ years.

Great Video. There are many endangered animals, plants, trees, etc that are in the DMZ. One of the unusual animals is the long tailed Goral, a wild goat species, that live in South Korea and in the DMZ. Have you seen any unusual animals or plants during your trip along the DMZ?
@lostthenfound
@lostthenfound 15 күн бұрын
Thanks so much @peterk1639! I was hoping that I would see some interesting animals and plants during my trip, but I wasn't able to spot any to my eye. I think someday I'm going to adventure further into the middle of the DMZ or towards the East Coast where there is less civilization, and hopefully I'll be able to see something new up there!

Thanks so much @Imnotabot6969! Haha I'm not really the right person to ask when it comes to gear (I don't focus too much on it), but we made a video a few years back and the gear is mostly the same as it is now. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5vNe5x3rJ6tesk The biggest difference would just be that I use butterfly handlebars on my bike which are amazing!
