Hello everyone! In this video, we go to Seonbu Station (선부역) to check out a new neighbourhood for us located in Ansan (안산). When I first got to Korea, everytime I would ask about Ansan, people would always tell me that it’s the most dangerous city in Korea and to avoid it, but after arriving there, it seemed very peaceful and like a great area for people and families to live in. We were reminded by a local resident that this area is home to Danwon High School (단원고등학교), the school involved in the Sewon Ferry Tragedy in 2014 (세월호). The families and people in the neighbourhood have clearly had a hard time this last decade, but it was reassuring to see how nice the neighbourhood was. It clearly shows resilience, and in the middle of it all, there is the Ansan Simin Market (안산시민시장), one of the oldest traditional markets we’ve ever seen, that still stands amongst the tall apartment complexes.

The most dangerous city in Korea is America's safest city, its true.

Most definitely agree @user-ey2ei5yv3f! The most dangerous city here is not dangerous at all.

I like how one of you spoke English and the other spoke Korean. Gave me a chance to learn Korean again. I didn't know about the big spermarkets being closed on Sundays so the old markets can survive.

Happy to hear you like the mix between English/Korean @2GoodLookin! Also funnily enough, that law was just changed yesterday I think? Now the stores can choose which days they close, but I think it has to be two days every month still.

Wow. I have't been to Ansan since '93. The areas of it I saw, at least as I remember them now, were quite a bit like the neighborhoods in Yeongdeungpo. I expected it would have changed since then, but that's a complete transformation. Now I want to go wander around a bit myself. Thanks for the video!

Wow Mike 1993! I was only 4 years old at that time haha. I bet you have seen Korea go through some absolutely massive changes in your time here! Also it's definitely worth a visit just to see the developments going on. Looking forward to your next video to learn some more about Korea, and stay warm in this ridiculously cold weather! Haha

Rest in peace, dear students from the Sewol... Thanks for taking a moment to remember them. On a lighter note, achievement unlocked, you found the hexagons! This is one of the few places in the world that has neighborhoods organized around hexagons. City Beautiful had a video about hexagons a few months ago, and I happened to comment about Ansan ^^

Rest in peace Danwon High School students and teachers. Was a really sad time here for sure. That's really cool about the hexagon fact though! Haha. Had no idea about the city until we randomly stumbled upon it, but it was a great place to explore for sure!

You said, when you eat alone at a Korean, they showed you how to eat the food? I had something similar happen to me at restaurants in Korea eating out with my wife and her family, the server would bring me a fork, so I said, cool a back scratcher as I used chopsticks, been eating with chopsticks for 30 years living in Hawaii 😂
@lostthenfound
@lostthenfound Күн бұрын
Haha yeah that would happen a lot to me too @user-ey2ei5yv3f. It doesn't happen as often these days, but sometimes the lady from the kitchen would sit down at my table with me and cook the food for me or I've even eaten together at a kimbap restaurant with the owner once. 🤣

I love "other peoples' mundane", and find it interesting - especially when it's in a foreign country. This series of videos is certainly scratching that particular itch for me. Thank you, KZbin algorithm.

Thanks a lot @marcellostraps! I still remember when I first got to Korea and my co-workers told me I should never go to Ansan because it's too dangerous. Turns out it's actually a really nice area! I'd live there too for sure!

At the end you touched on work restrictions in terms of location and I couldn't agree more,, I'm living in Daejeon and absolutely love it here,, it's a pity the opportunities for foreigners tend to be in Seoul (and surrounding areas),,, I'd love to stay in Daejeon but it's likely not possible,, I'll enjoy it while I can :)

I've always had a really good time in Daejeon everytime I've gone there. We have considered living there just because of its central location and access to the entire country. You are so right that most of the working opportunities are in Seoul for foreigners though unfortunately. Hope you can find a way to stay there since it sounds you really like it!
