I live on a very rural picturesque road in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. I always swore I would never put a bike on what I considered a dangerous road. Are the risks worth it? I am close to buying a bike. Please comment. Thanks much.

What is the clicking sound around 7:49, my bike does it too when I first start out mainly and it is annoying. Is it the cleat shifting in the pedals? I use KEO cleats. I've even thought about spraying the pedals with silicone in the morning,
@BikeBlogger
@BikeBlogger 6 жыл бұрын
I think that is the cleats yes. For me the solution was just to increase the tension on the shimano pedals and switch to one directional release. But in doing so I changed the cleat so my guess is the the cleat/bolts were just dirty/worn.

+Cyclist Bloger Not sure Cyclist Bloger. I would think workers might be surprised if you did though, and company policy may disallow it. Unfortunately criminals climb through those windows sometimes.

That road looks like 10 miles out of my 15 mile commute. Luckily for most of it, traffic is very little. But even where there is more traffic, I ride lane center at all times. I'm never close to the edge line. Even when people pull stupid stuff like passing with oncoming traffic, they still give me the full lane when passing. Now I did take a different route just a couple weeks ago and went on a road with slightly higher traffic volume. I stopped a couple of times on the side to let traffic pass. But for the rest of it I remained lane center, or even left of center sometimes.

I almost never take the road lane; trying to co-exist right? Assume almost no one driving knows the rights of cyclists and then be pleasantly surprised when they do. Otherwise one is going to be confrontational, flipping arms every which way and not having a very nice ride if constantly stewing about having their road rights impinged upon.

Actually, I've found it to be the opposite. I was commuting for 3 years using your preferred method (side positioning) and being pushed around by cars all the time. For the last two years I've been using the legal method (and recommended method by all resources I've ever read: city programs, DOT pamphlets, biking association content, etc.) lane positioning techniques and it's like Night & Day. I highly recommend trying it out. In all honesty, I did have one driver honk and yell out the window, but then again he did so while passing fully in the other lane, generously more than 3ft of space. A smile and a wave goes a long way :)

@@oycarrumba This is an interesting discussion with you, Patrick, Digby and BB. I can see both points of view. My 7.2 mile commute features 5+ miles of this roadway situation. I vary my positioning throughout the trip - when I have a wide right edge, (which BB does NOT have in this video) and higher traffic, I will take the right edge, especially to let drivers pass. When I have no edge, lower traffic, and upcoming intersections (any one of these three), I try to take the lane.

@@johngardner1898 That sounds like a great use of the road conditions: lane control when appropriate and execution of control&release when it's safe for you. Nice work.
