I am riding to work 30km every day, whole year round no matter how bad the weather is. The following things are important to me: - be happy that a bike ride is you-time that nobody can take away from you. Especially in bad weather because less people will bother you with their slow bikes. - clean and lubricated bike, especially in winter. Cleaning also helps finding week spots and it helps keeping the bike alive - learn how to maintain a bike. It's easy and you will have a calm mind because you know every part of it. - pack TWO inner tubes, pump, tools, maybe bandages and rubber gloves. - check weather the night before and lay out clothes accordingly. Then check again the morning you ride to adapt to maybe changed conditions - especially during the cold season dress in a way that you are a little bit cold during first 5 minutes of your ride. I always wear clear Uvex glasses. They help alot in rain, cold wind and with insects. And they are dead cheap. - pack the night before. And bring basic rain gear even if none is forecast. Modern rain gear will be so light you won't notice at all. - recharge lamps if unsure the batteries will last - I ride really early in the morning to be ahead of traffic - immediately after getting up I drink at least 500ml of water to get my system going. - I eat and shower at work so I only brush my teeth before leaving - depending on the weather or any errands I have to run after work I either choose my single speed hack or my fixed gear racer. The hack has a rack with 2 Ortlieb bags, fenders aso and for the fixed gear which is a bare minimum bike for fun, ease and speed I use an Ortlieb backpack with enough room - inflate those tires every morning - go and have fun Hope that helps?

I’m amazed at the quality of some of those roads. I get that in a large country infrastructure costs become a problem, but some of those surfaces look dangerous.

NIce vid. I love your route to work, weaving in and out of different areas. For me, it's just roads with signal lights, no shortcuts through company car parks etc! Your tips are true, the best being get ready the night before. Having my pannier bags ready is such a help. Though my biggest motivation is that I can cycle my 17km route in around 35-40 mins (traffic allowing etc) which is at least 20 mins quicker than any other method (helicopter aside). You touched briefly on how you check cars to see if they are about to back up. I think a vid highlighting various dangers and pointing out what we daily commuters look for would be helpful for those starting out. I know I have had to 'teach' people on the road about etiquette and basic survival rules. Keep up the good work!

I know I'm usually a night owl (had to be, having worked the 13h-22h shift for two years) and that extends to even when I'm working the day shift if I have to use the car. To counter that, I set not one, not two, but _three_ alarm clock timers for the morning, the earliest one two hours before I have to be on the job. Although if I know I'm going by pushbike? Man, I get so stoked I wake up _before_ the first alarm clock, and after the first journey on the pedals I legit can't stay up past midnight. The bike really fixes my biological clock!
@rithe076 жыл бұрын
Lol 3 is a lot? I usually have 5-6 alarm clocks to wake me up in the morning. Though I usually get up one the 2nd or 3rd one, I just set the other ones for just in case and because I don't trust the snooze button.

Single speed is hard on your knees in the long term. Standing while pedaling coming off a stop sign is a signal you're putting a lot of pressure on the knees. I find I use about 3 gears during a commute - a low gear coming off a stop, a middle gear for mid-speed, and 1 (or 2) gears for fast speeds.

I find the Alfine 8 on my Hybrid is perfectly sufficient. Hills, getting up to speed efficiently enough, etc. but I’d never commute with my saddle bags 6 miles each way on a single speed. To each their own.

@BikeBlogger8 жыл бұрын
They are called bullhorn type. Mine are Origin8 brand and can be purchased online from many vendors. Local bike shops may or may not have them because they are most commonly found of single speed bikes and not as popular as mountain bike or road style handlebars.

Whenever I ride to work I feel good riding up there in the mornings, and on my way back I feel more tired while riding and sluggish. I have s specialized road bike which is decently fast. at my job im on my feet all day so im moving around alot so I wonder if its the fatigue after work and wind can play a factor in it, You have any advice on this.
@BikeBlogger8 жыл бұрын
What you fuel with during the day could contribute a lot to how you feel at the end of the day. If you eat a lot of foods with little nutrition you might consider changing up your diet? Walking all day would wear me out too though so I sympathize! Like everything the best way to live is moderation (standing or sitting breaks).

To complement BikeBlogger, my advice is to eat every 2 hours, and learn to enjoy the taste of fruit as a snack. Do that, and biking will _energize_ you instead of draining you.

Why do you have to wave people on at junctions? Is it a US thing? Never seen it happen in the UK.
@BikeBlogger9 жыл бұрын
Traitorbagel It's a personal habit, Traitorbagel. I feel safer directing traffic along than I do moving in front unless I really trust them. I think it's a good habit too. And I'm just a really nice guy! LOL
@ft67559 жыл бұрын
BikeBlogger Fair enough! I suppose the equivalent junctions in the UK and rest of Europe would be roundabouts, you can't really wave someone over a roundabout. Having a car up your bum isn't pleasant, can see why you do it.
@holdencraig30108 жыл бұрын
Nimrod In a smaller town or suburb like bikebloger appears to be in it is more than likely the right thing to do. A good amount of people will wait because the bike is slowly rolling to a stop, they expect you to just roll through the intersection. Waving them through let's them know he's stopping and saves a few seconds of potential "you go, no you go, no I insist you go, etc.". Mutual courtesy, plus it's better to have a car passing you headed down the road than sitting there waiting for you to cross in front of it. 😀
