There's one thing adrenaline junkies love the world over, and that is going downhill very, very fast! Hank is one of those people, and for years he's been throwing bikes down descents all in the pursuit of speed! But is there a faster way? We've teamed up with Storck Bikes and MET helmets to see once and for all, which is faster downhill, a cyclist on an aero bike, or a professional downhill longboarder!

Race a thoroughbred racehorse. There's the bit for the horse to run and a parallel track where the camera cars go for the bike. A horse will do 37mph on the flat so it'll be a good race.

have you heard of a race called Megavalanche? (loads of videos on YT). I think the race is in the Swiss Alps and is basically a mass start event (lots of riders - not the religious mass) where you start above the snow line and continue descending through trail and forested land for about an hour .

Thanks GCN for the exhibition of bikes and longboards! My two favorite transportation methods! Longboarding is exquisite fun, even if I keep it slow on both. Cycling or longboarding for time seems like ... procrastinating for time. If something is that fun, linger, enjoy, luxuriate in the precious time you have together. Don't rush it. Enjoy it.

The Iditarod Trail Invitational is the world's longest running winter ultra-marathon. One of the most challenging experiences on the planet, participants brave extreme physical, environmental and mental challenges as they travel along the historic Iditarod Trail on bicycle, foot or skis. Requiring self-sufficiency and the considerable resilience to make it through up to 30 frozen days and nights, the Iditarod Trail Invitational has built its reputation on notoriously inhospitable conditions and minimal outside support. Definitely in the GMBN arena, providing some bike company, food company, bike clothing, and GPS company could sponsor them. The 1000 mile option is only open to those who have done the 350 mile ITI. So a GCN+ sequel video is possible, and GMBN will never complain about the UK being cold again!

The bike with its bigger and grippier wheels, more control, probably better aerodynamics and most importantly a drivetrain to input further energy additionally to the gravity would absolutely smoke a longboard. This was such a cool video idea but I feel like it fell short of its potential. I felt the skills of people descending were not emphasized and it was 90% B roll. I’d have loved to see more on how a long boarder effectively corners and I wish there was an attempt to answer the title question of “Who is faster?” although I’d assume the answer is a cyclist.
@lisapet160
@lisapet160 Жыл бұрын
Long boarder actually. But inline skater with 5-wheels frames is even faster.
@taylorlayton4508
@taylorlayton4508 Жыл бұрын
@@lisapet160 how do you know this? Is this just record for top speed? I assume it depends on the descent - what grades, how long there might be flat spots... I feel like anything where there is a chance to actually pedal and accelerate-- flatter moments - cyclist is going to be faster. Also, cyclists are going to be able to accelerate out of hairpins a lot better than a long boarder or an inline skater. Also, homeboy was never in supertuck this whole video. I feel like given any random long descent (not just one straight chute down), I would take a cyclist every time over both long board and inline skater.

Do you have any videos that may be dedicated to riders who are in their early 60s or someone like me who's getting ready to turn 63. It seems a year ago I was able to ride two or three times a week no problem' s. This year I'm having problems after I ride a little bit my legs are very sore to the point it's almost a week or so before I can ride again. The last time I was out on the bike I did maybe 42 miles luckily I was near a friend of mine's gas station. I think I became very dehydrated. Anyways I pulled up to his station I tried to get off the bike and my legs were cramping up so bad I couldn't get off. Thankfully there was a young guy there who saw I was having some kind of trouble and brought me a huge glass of ice water. He helped me get off the bike he said go sit in the air conditioning for a while. Anyway I've talked to other people who are around 60 saying they're not able to ride like they used to as well. Is there anyway or video you got that cover these situations ❓ also I'm waiting for the temperatures to be below 80 again before I attempt to ride anymore. What are there any supplements or things people of age should be taking or doing to help them in this situation?

longboarders descend much faster than bikes. getting 40mph+ is an easy feat while many cyclists are stuck just hitting that. you want the front truck to turn a little more than the rear. if the trucks are identical it is evermore important for the rider to have their weight slightly biased to the front truck, over the front truck. for falling you are gonna have a hand and a prefered roll or if you slide away youll have provisions for doing that. the sliding gloves are made from a hard slippery plastic and very fun and add safety to tight turns. 300-600$ gets you a topend board from someone like longboard larry, subsonic, rayne, DB longboards. there is no need to get ripped off at a shopping mall buying an inferior product. churchill manufacturing makes great decks and for a new rider their decks are choice. i havent looked in years but Roja trucks from braden boards has gone through alot of reengineering from an originally cost effective and dope product. their trucks no cost some crazy figure. regular longboard trucks like Paris, Sabre, Randall work great and if the bushings are tuned to your Weight and riding style it makes alot of difference. the traditional trucks are lighter than Rojas and ride lower and make for a better crusier but yet,,, that isnt tottaly true; for a good rider zero tolerance skate truck designs allow better thrust from carves and more secure slide stops,, oh an they work better at speed. skateboarding utilizes the 'gunk seal' philopshy very much as you remove the sheilds on the inside of the wheel assembly and add a good dab of white lithium or whatever.. that grese wears outward leaving a low grease/low friction enviroment inside the bearing assemblies and a think 'Gunk Seal' at the bearing opening. this Philosophy works amazong with pedals where you can put a thin silicone in the cup and a thicker polylube around the threads of the spindle before you put it back together. over a winter or through dirt this will stay really smooth. the best way to picka longboard up at a stop is to take your rear foot off to stomp-footbrake and lightly lift up your front foot and place its heel down on the nose as to cause it to pop up. if done right, the enertia from the forward travel combined with the abrupt forced halt will send the board upward and, if done right, will pop right up into your front arm/hand (out of your line of sight for proper excecution, but you can look back while learning it). ok now if this is done at a curb you can as soon as the board reaches your hand you can drop it back down from the same position it was received in your hand/posture with or without a leap from your rear foot currently on the ground. the move is called an 'acid drop' and you get back on the board. this way you can with Minimal Effort pop a Longboard Larry Pusher up a curb smoothly or come to a halt without the silly fumble to pick the board up. e, the rider has area trucks which are a top shelf brand. Global Longboarding Network. lots of board types, makers and its way better than a one wheel

I think the cyclist could have easily won by a greater margin but I wonder how much faster the longboarder would be with proper aero clothing?
@robinburt5735
@robinburt5735 Жыл бұрын
even without aero-clothing it would be a no contest. one is purely powered by gravity and other is not
@espenjohansen8074
@espenjohansen8074 Жыл бұрын
@@robinburt5735 how much does it count though? In downhill mountain biking, contests have been won by competitors who lost their chain in the beginning of the run. Focusing on maintaining speed is sometimes faster than focusing on braking and pedaling. And: longboarders are fast!!
@silence-humility-calmness
@silence-humility-calmness Жыл бұрын
@@robinburt5735 here the cyclist had aero cloths and long-boarder did not and the cyclist cycled and it was neck and neck, aero clothes could have made the skater too fast, gravity is faster than any cyclist and areo dynamics determines how fast gravity is, a long boarder is way more aero than a cyclist

@@espenjohansen8074 That is true about chainless runs on DH bikes, but that is more to do with how the chain negatively impacts the rear suspension.

I got into longboarding for the thrill of the top speed but eventually took to cycling for the faster average speed. You can climb on a longboard but it SUCKS! And on the downhills your out of corner speed is faster on pedals. Still take the board on shorter trips but 2 wheels wins this round. Awesome vid!

Once came across a group of longboarders on my downhill mountain bike, headed down the hill with the fast confident guy leading me (even had an aero helmet) nearly crashed into him as they are so much slower. The small wheels and no brakes means they cant do anything like a bike can, let alone a bike has pedal power. There is no contest between the two

Thing is, and not meaning to be rude, but Hank is a bit of a tank and isn't the most aero-shaped rider on the team. And trust me, wearing a helmet slows you down, no matter how aero the helmet, a non -existant helmet has 100% less drag than THE most aero helmet out there. Some lucky bugger's going to get my heart one day.

To be fair, Mirko wasn't skating in leathers so had increased drag from his t-shirt, as well as doing standup skids on round lipped wheels so he didn't slow down as effectively as he could've, not to mention skating wide hangers and long wb. A more correct comparison would've featured leather suit, square lipped wheels, narrow trucks and wb, and hands down sliding - As uncontrolled and adrenaline junkie fueled it might look to navigate mountains on skateboards, in reality that biker would've gotten smoked if Mirko geared and skated for it.
