My take is that the overarching theme of this season was about ways of dealing with bigotry and oppression. Using violence to combat your oppressor, who in this case was literally born with programming to hate and destroy mutants, was only going to keep perpetuating the cycle.

I know Cyclops extending an olive branch to a man willing to turn even his own mother into a cyber-slave seems ludicrous at first, but you have to remember that Bastion’s capacity for free will is compromised. From even before birth, Bastion has had the Nimrod Sentinel’s programming constantly influencing his mind. Filling his brain with, as he calls it, an overpowering, irresistible “urge” to complete Nimrod’s prime directive, Mutant subjection, as soon as physically possible. J.R.R. Tolkien mentioned that one aspect of LOTR he regretted was the depiction of Orcs as being instinctually compelled to do harm, because how they can be called evil if they have no choice in acting the way they do? The same logic applies to Bastion. Cyclops most likely thought that a skilled psychic could free Bastion of his directive and make his decisions truly his own for the first time in his life, but Bastion ended up a slave to his programming to the bitter end. A monster…that was never given a chance to be anything else.

The magneto protocols don’t even make sense. The missiles are metal. The small chance they somehow found an alternative to metal in the missiles magneto can literally shield his entire asteroid like he did in this exact episode

Is it just me or were they more upset at Magneto than Bastion? Magneto tries to do good and it takes a literal genocide (and a kid dying on his arms) to make him reverse course and they write him off, Bastian who committed said genocide and killed two X-Men (Madelyn and Gambit) is invited to the cookout?

Charles would’ve been more accurate if they lived in our real world, but in Marvel Comics, there’s such a vehement hate towards mutants that’s even more extreme than real life extremist groups, and that’s saying something. Magneto is 100% justified in the comics, but he’d be wrong if he was on our real life earth.

I love how much x-men media ends with the villain losing but still kinda being right about what humanity will do to mutants. Bastion says “they’d rather die than have babies like us” and lo and behold, humanity is literally firing missiles at asteroid M as they speak. At the end of First Class Magneto tells Xavier that the world will try to wipe them out and sure enough, they are Immediately fired upon *after* saving the world from nuclear war

If he really wanted to torture them he should have said "Sure man, sounds legit! Can I have Gambit's old room?" Then they would have to give a space over to the dude that killed thousands of em. And it would have caused a schism where a good chunk of them started to resent Cyclops. And then they would have turned on and killed each other while Bastion ate popcorn in a folding chair. That was Bastion's downfall. He just didn't think outside the box!

This whole set piece is kinda weird. Shooting an orbiting object with missiles from Earth would never cause it to move towards Earth. They are acting like asteroids are like airplanes that need engines to stay up. Combine that with the fact that jubilee can suddenly breathe in space..... Makes me think the writers failed science class

The asteroid is in low orbit, kept in the Lagrange point (null pull between Earth and Moon) by Magneto's powers. Without him, the orbit starts to decay, so he had to go and fix it from time to time. The missiles knocked it out of said point, so Earth pulled it back. As for Jubilee breathing, yeah the air should be thin as hell, even with extensive training she would be in distress instead of acting normally. I'm guessing Sunspot's powers are what keeps it all up?

This is more about my brain than the animation quality, but when they repeat the animation of Bastion turning his head up twice in the same scene, it feels so jarring, I can't process it. Just like when they reused animations in that scene where Jean is getting those psychic signals before finding Emma Frost.
