I enjoyed the review and the anecdotes, but a point of order: it's completely possible to play ECO in singleplayer. Just tweak the settings to gain stars faster, and to require less material for crafting. It's a huge timesink and you have to be committed to doing literally every task and profession in the game, since all the tech is interconnected, but if you like progressing up an enormous tech tree and can keep all of the many crafting chains straight in your head, it is quite enjoyable even solo.
@cavejohnson98211 ай бұрын
Could you reccomend a set of settings? I bought eco years ago but never got any friends to get it too. So i dont really knwo what to tweak..
@LuaanTi11 ай бұрын
@@cavejohnson982 There's presets for different kinds of servers, including a solo-style game. If you start the dedicated server, you have full control over the parameters of the simulation through a simple GUI. The solo preset is fine, though if you want a faster game, there's definitely things you can do - but don't worry about it too much, since you can change those at any time. If you find yourself waiting too much or doing too much grind for your fun, just make crafting faster or yield more. There's quite a range of options :)

@@cavejohnson982 You can change the settings in an ongoing game, so I would start with the "no collaboration" preset. Then as you play and get a sense for how the progression feels, depending on how challenging/grindy you want the game to be, you can use admin commands to adjust the settings so you can get stars faster (needed to take on new professions), and/or increase XP rate (or edit the Difficulty.eco file directly, if you prefer).

I was one of the major kickstarter backers for Eco way back in the day, I remember playing it for a few hours at launch and immediately getting overwhelmed by my social anxiety when it came to just dropping into a server and playing. Sadly it had ballooned in scope more than I was comfortable with. In the end I watched a few videos about the game, felt my money was well spent for others enjoyment, and then proceeded to forget the game ever existed until this popped up on my feed. I am really glad the law system they implemented turned out to be this compelling though, I remember the early feedback stage and hype when it was first revealed and developed.

sounds kinda like civcraft, I like it edit: One of the best features of CivCraft (multiplayer minecraft mod) was PrisonPearl. This mod made it so that if you killed a player while an Ender Pearl was on your hotbar, that player would respawn in the End, and their 'soul' would be stored in your Ender Pearl, kinda like a Pokémon ball. The victim could only be released by someone having access to their Pearl. Since there was no server-banning (apart from if you were a cheater), it was up to players themselves to police the gameworld and maintain enormous obsidian vaults for storing criminals' Pearls. Occasionally, prisoners would be freed if their comrades launched a raid on a vault, managing to steal the Pearls back.

The fact that there was corruption between the rich occupations and the government is actually mesmerising. This game threads the line between simulation of reality and social experiment. Are people inclined to act corrupt because of the modern influence of power or does the corruption come from a “natural” tendency, from which modern corruption evolved? It would be so cool to study this tbh
@peterlewis217810 ай бұрын
Or does it come from the in-game environmental factors? For instance, the ability to get rich and be relied upon making people like their newfound power and want to hold onto it. Like the age-old saying goes, "absolute power corrupts absolutely". Though in reality, I think it's clearly a complex combination of all of these factors, and many more.

ECO has been such a fun game over the years. I really wish we had some game like Minecraft take some features from it and play up the need to form a community online. Having land deeds, stores, actually needing to rely on other players and so on would be so welcomed... If you want some ECO experience like no other, try the White Tiger server at some point. It's the hardest official server, you can do politics all day every day and still be only a tiny part in a giant machine of some of the best ECO players...

Haven and Hearth is a brilliant game in just this way. Unfortunately, _extremely_ unfriendly (there's plenty of friendly players, but it only takes one bastard to ruin your game, and there's plenty of those too :D ), and you can't make a private server to play in a more moderated environment :'( It has quite a few features you don't see in games often, and really builds on the persistent MMO world. Minecraft and Eco are still the best options for more chill play, though. It's lovely at least the indies try to keep the UO/SWG vibe alive :)

Social aspect sounds fun. gameplay itself sounds tedious af if all you're doing is harvesting/mining, and building, it really seems like you need alot of friends on this to make it fun. Since you mentioned the comparison to RUST, I'd like to say the big difference is RUST has combat. not saying ECO needs that, but thats what certainly makes RUST engaging.
@LuaanTi11 ай бұрын
It's for people who like working. It's all pretty chill and relaxing, while you slowly transform the world around you (while progressively increasing your ability to affect the world). It's a lot more like Euro Truck Simulator than a typical Minecraft server, and it's built a lot about having a community on a persistent server (with relatively frequent resets - the default gives you just 30 days to destroy the Meteor, but there's hundreds of configuration options to tweak the simulation your way). Making a game engaging by building it around PvP combat (especially "hardcore", with item loss or permadeath) is a cheap copout, IMO. Fake gameplay, built on having the players provide the gameplay... without really giving them anything interesting to do beyond being awful to each other :D And it's very rare to see such a game do anything interesting to the formula, because the fun tends to come from the rush of fighting other players, rather than interesting gameplay itself). I've been bored with combat games for more than a decade now. They focus too much on immediate satisfaction (or frustration), rather than a slow climb, building up, taking your time, finding friends...

Big gaming needs to be dumb enough to always conclude with Feudal Facism. This has something to do with the "Monkey Computer Model" Imagine nonkeys counting fruit, forming a Logic Gate witch form a computer, 1 and 1 fruit = 0 fruit. Each monkey might have an IQ of what? 3IQ but if paired up logically the Mashine might have an uper limit determined by the amount of monkeys and the Qualety with witch they have been aranged. Now think of the following. A room with a hundret people each who score 100IQ perfectly, they all get one pen and one piece of paper an IQ test, how high can they all score together? We would based on the 3IQ monkey mashine expect this value to have an naive uper limit aboth the enitial value. But as we all know most people aren't computer engineering geniuses and less so our crowd of average smart people. Perhaps some could know a thing or two from having watched a KZbin Short on it. Now the Crowd Organising Itself will score how high? The point being the value will be sorta be set based on the mix of people with few expected diviation forming a sort of Standart Backing Mix to build the Mashin of people. This hardware will only be able to run certain software, Feudal Facism better then Online Democracy.

@@Cygnus_MC Many thanks for the invitation. I got my feet wet in sp and feel ready to handle the game well enough for mp. How do I find the server? I wanted to join your discord bu the link from your video description and your bio seem to be invalid.

I think this would have a lot of negative real life consequences if it got bigger. Players could manipulate other player/ extort them for real life value or other things (Basically blackmail). I mean that's already prevalent in other games but anyways. Besides that I think this is super cool and amazing game, I haven't played it and this is the first time I saw it. I want to play but Idk if its worth it to buy it, I might idk. Another thing, I think it would be super fun and engaging to implement a law/ union/ government where there is one or a few central stores set up by the government. Players would ship their items to those stores and everything will be sold by the government. This means that even if your a player who doesn't get on a lot, you can still get on and not feel so behind. Also for the players that give the items to the government, they will receive some profit for every item of their type gets sold. For example if the average sale of iron is for 20 gold and now you have an average of five people selling iron you can estimate how much you need to pay them so that the government doesn't lose too much money. In this way you also prevent players from locking prices, and for players that want to be the shop owner, well they can just manage the shop for the government with its laws and rules.

I wish the community for this game was larger but it is hella grindy and people leave midway through the wipe for various reasons.

I always love the idea of this game. I even have it in my steam library. But ultimately it's too time intensive for me.

I would be interested in seeing a server that rejects money and bartering and works in a non-hierarchical fashion
