Also... Unlike Minecraft.... Game updates don't break all the mods, usually just bits of mods will break. Mainly if certain classes are heavily changed. Oh and the built in WORLD EDIT is also a sweet thing. Vertical slabs are a thing, Waterlogged blocks can become ICELOGGED instead, etc.

its because minecraft tends to do large backend performance upgrades and system changes between updates (like light engine rewrite in 1.20, worldgen rewrite in 1.18) to allow or more features with datapacks and more unique feature that aren't just hardcoded that can be modified with commands, etc

12:34 That's actually kind of a smart decision on his part. Looking at it now, Minecraft definitely became popular way too fast considering it was still in development during the Alpha and Beta phase when things weren't set in stone. The popularity likely shifted Mojang's focus in game design towards a much more wide and general audience and caused them to rush the development cycle of the full release of 1.0 which led to some aspects of the game like the Nether and The End and the lore of the game to lack polish which many updates after 1.0 attempt to flesh out like 1.9 for The End and 1.16 for the Nether as well as 1.19's Ancient Cities and 1.20's Archeology.

I wish you had gone into mods a bit more because they are absolutely amazing. Unlike in minecraft where large modpacks take an obscene amount of time to make to create a cohesive experience, in vintage story any mod you install will very seamlessly fit into the game and can expand it so much

Can't go without Primitive Survival. I'm a sucker for the Firearms mod because they're the old style wheel locks and muskets. Very impressively animated too. XSkills is incredible for an RPG feel. And I even got that texture pack with the crazy nebula sky and the two suns. All with one click each. I'm just so enamored by the system. You could play Vanilla but I mean the game can be enriched so much with just PS alone.

I've played this game for over 50 hours now, and most of that time I've either been in pine/maple forests areas and cedar grasslands. The other day, I tweaked some settings on a new world with my friends and made it warm and humid. BAM. Bamboo boys. But not just bamboo, new biomes I had never seen before. Vintage story biomes are MASSIVE, and I've walked and even flew quite a bit around and not seen new biomes on normal worlds. So starting this new world and being surrounded by new plants like Brown Sedge and Papyrus felt so exciting. There's also a lot more chickens around us than we are used to, and we are finding uses for bamboo, especially the shoots which are GREAT for food. We all logged off and I made another new world with the same settings for myself, and I didn't see any bamboo, so I started running south. 3 days journey of running. Collecting as I ran and marking traders and copper on the map, until I reached the southern tip of my landmass. Oak and redwood everywhere, decent copper nearby, plenty of food. It was a paradise. And just across the water... Do my eyes deceive me...? Towering mountains, and what appears to be a DESERT! IVE NEVER SEEN A DESERT IN VS BEFORE!!! So naturally I'm preparing my home and getting myself ready for a fucking adventure. I fucking love this game. That house? The one I was building there? The one I chopped down several huge walnut trees to make? I built that, started baking some pottery in a kiln next to it. Watched it for a minute and ran off to get more wood. I turned around and my whole house was ablaze. 😂 I saved the important stuff, but I lost the house and the massive stack of firewood I was saving for charcoal. It was 2pm, and night was coming. And I had no shelter. Square 1. I fucking love this game. I built my new house, and uh, haha.. hehe, I kept hearing noises at night. Well, haha, turns out there was a cave beneath my house. And as I was jumping for joy at the High Fertility soil I found near the base of the hill my house was on, haha hehe hoho, I triggered a cave in, and a giant sinkhole opened up in front of my house😂😂😂😂😂 I really do love this game lol

I like everything about this game except the minimap. In my opinion, having a map that shows you exactly where you are is bit too op, I know you can disable it, but that makes me almost powerless in terms of orientation. Instead of just the minimap that is currently in the game, I think more realistic map (a piece of paper that you can draw on or something like that) and compass would be way better.

The game is designed heavily around exploration, you will have to travel, often many kilometers over rough terrain to find the resources, ores, and rock strata you need to progress. Gating navigation aids behind resources would discourage exploration early and massively raise the difficulty of finding resources midgame when working bronze. This would create the same issue that has spawned so many map mods for minecraft, namely that you are forced to either use debug coordinates to navigate or stay around your base till you've mined deep enough to get the redstone for a compass to make a map with, and even then that map offers limited functionality and consumes finite inventory space. Given the comparative scarcity of minerals, and the fact that papyrus only exists around the equator means this issue would be much worse in Vintage Story. That said, I'm not against them adding physical mapping tools, the ability to map out your surroundings and hang this map on a wall would be really cool, and it would offer options for those that don't like the more gamey minimap/map solution currently implemented. But I also feel that the current map and waypoint system is really helpful to being able to enjoyably play the game, and if you disagree, you already have the option to disable one or both aspects of it.

This reminds me so much of Terrafirmacraft which was a mod that loved so much when it was orginally release and now they basically went out and made of full version of it as a standalone game. It looks great

It's 100% heavily inspired by it. Many mechanics and features are quite literally the same or incredibly close to be the same. It's like TFC but a standalone game with some other MC mod influences such as Better Than Wolves or even Thaumcraft. Probably the first "Minecraft clone" that I feel good about. MC itself has really lost me with a lot of their updates and all the chibbi kiddy stuff, kinda going the opposite direction of what I wanted and most of the great mods have been dead for a long time as well. (including the ones that I mentioned that inspired VS). Was really an instant purchase for me after watching a couple videos. Now we just need Etho to play it. He has done both TFC as well as its modpack TerraFirmaPunk so this should probably be right up his alley.

I have so many hours into Vintage Story. I'm a huge pre-industrial Sevtech fan so this game is great for me You feel so baddass smashing iron blooms with a hammer or setting up your first steel makers But my biggest complaint about the game is the Drifters They have such cool lore, the faux blade brings up a quote that sounds straight out of Bloodborne, " he creatures hide metal in their flesh and their blood flows like sludge. A simple sword will not do here." They sound like intimidating monsters but in reality they look so lame they're dumpy and severely underwhelming design wise, not to mention they're the only enemy on the surface and really common The hardest thing about them is the rock spam and forcing me to turn my volume down the avoid the drifter moan ASMR The drifter lore is so cool, but damn they look really lame, meanwhile there is a chainsaw scorpion thing that looks sick as well in the same game, it's highly intimidating, i wish they brought that energy to some of the higher level drifters instead of it being a normal drifter but rusty

Been following Vintage Story for years and bought it just this Summer, it's fantastic. The realistic aspects of it is something you don't see often. Preserving food for the winter, prospecting for ore, molding clay for different cookware and so on. Also a bunch of mods that make things even better, like a mod that allows you to dress and cure your wild animal kills for cooking and leatherworking

Found this game last week. After so many years of minecraft, this is exactly what I was looking for. Brutally difficult, even the chickens will attack! But so rewarding because of it. Huddled in the dark, clayforming a pot to cook my meagre catch to get just enough satiation to go out and find some berries in the morning so I can have enough strength to chase down a wild boar. Each day making a little more progress; a seed for the garden here, some extra wood for fences there. Haven't even made it to winter yet!

Playing this game for the first time brought me flashbacks of my first few times playing Minecraft as a kid. Not knowing how to progress, building a dirt shack just to make it through the first couple of nights, constantly being afraid of dying, the excitement of finding whatever materials you’re looking for, etc. This game is genuinely amazing and it has even more potential! I love Vintage Story. Every year or so I pop back on and see what they've changed, grab a few mods, and lose myself in the world. Currently I started in the default biome and traveled like 30k blocks south to start a base in the jungle. I'm using Culinary Artillery and Primitive Cooking to really get deep into making food. Its so much fun!

Vintage Story is by far one of the best most involved survival experiences I've ever had in a game. Second only to Project Zomboid, I think. It's a neat game with a budding modding scene, and not to sound like a gatekeeper, I'm glad the community is still small.

you've likely heard of it already, though if you're a fan these two games, maybe CDDA (cataclysm: dark days ahead) may be to your taste too, it's the crossroads betweel vintage story's in-depth crafting and project zomboid's setting and atmosphere (albeit the zombies have special powers in the later days), i can wholly recommend it and i'm a fan of all 3 games

For me VS recaptures that comforting and homey feeling I used to get from playing Minecraft as a kid. But now I've grown up and VS allows me to do it again, but in a more mature manner. It's not better or worse than Minecraft. It's its own thing, with its own goals and milestones. More primitive and simplistic goals, such as doing nothing more than building a small home and taking care of a garden and combined with more depth and less abstraction. You will have to do more and harder work for less results than in Minecraft. Manual, menial labor is mandatory and the end results are comparatively way smaller than what you're able to do in Minecraft. But it's exactly that scaling down combined with the rustic theming that lets me escape from the complex reality of adult life today and just worry about watering my crops and making wine. It's the digital equivalent of living in a cottage. Of course, the eldritch horrors part of the game is no less intriguing.

Tyron is absolutely right when it comes to waiting for it to become popular. The small community it has for now knows exactly what the game needs and the feedback seem to always be on point, if some features aren't liked too much or need balancing, the devs take notes and fix them. Having a huge community now would be a bit detrimental, as they would receive so much questionable feedback from so many people who all want different things. I can totally see the game getting a Steam release and becoming somewhat popular in a few years, but for now the small community is all it needs

I found this game some time last year due to one of those 100 Days videos. A week later I got into it during my college's winter break and pretty consistently played to two in the morning. After a bit I got my little brother in a bit so we could _actually_ play games together again despite having a potato pc and a slightly beefy laptop. We pretty much only ended up playing around an hour each session (after that he would kinda loose interest due to gameplay repetitiveness, tbh I could keep going) which averaged to about every weekend. Now he's also in his own college and we can't really play together anymore until we are both somehow home for a break. I _really_ should get back into Vintage Story again.

Vintage Story's GREAT! Modding it is super easy too. Highly suggest a backpack mod though. Cellar is way more important that cooking BTW. Panning is the easiest way to get early copper. Do it at night when outside wants to murder you! The game isn't hard. It's complicated, and God forbid, nuanced. Basically everything you need to know is in the handbook [ H ] by default. If it's not, then there's guides on youtube or the forum for it. If you DO want an easier time, there's ONE setting on standard difficulty to adjust- the number of days to a month. This will give you FAR more time before winter to get yourself in gear. Remember- you're squishy until you get your nutrition balanced, and even then you'll never be Minecraft Steve. Dangers abound, but with the right friends, or the right setting (uncheck class specific crafting if you're solo) survival becomes MUCH easier. I can't suggest the sling enough, so get a Malefactor on your team if you are serverside. The smallest cellar is a container buried in the ground under a single block (twig doors don't work as cellar doors, the door needs to be solid). You CAN build greenhouses. Snow accumulates. Pregnant animals don't lose weight over winter, and animals become tame across GENERATIONS. You can have tiny gaps in your indoor walls (50% total of blocks must exist, and no more than 30% of inward side may be missing) making arrow slits viable. And so, so much more. Preserve with salt, make cheese, craft brighter lanterns, rotate crops(then find Terra Preta) learn about steelcrafting, automate simple processes. Head north and freeze to death. Head south and dodge winter. Get good at decorating. It's an amazingly fun game in its complexity.

I kept the seasonal length but removed the storms and kept inventory on for my first game. I wanna try to make it to and through my first winter but I want to avoid death loops and cheesing mechanics, while also having a little bit more of a peace of mind when trying to learn things.

I heard of it before, but never in depths so I thought it's just not out for public yet. I really like games about progression from lowest stages of civilization to INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION AND IT'S CONSEQUENCES, FUCK NATURE! Video is generally great, though in my opinion your problem with vanilla is ignorance of the sandbox element of the game.

It's actually funny to see that a small team have managed to create a more complex, good looking and working game than Mojang. Who would have thought, huh? From my observations performance started to go downhill from 1.10.2 and never returned to normal. I'm not going into conspiracy but either Mojang devs can't code or some garbage projects such as chat reporting are taking precios time that could be potentially used to improve performance and game structure in general. Thanks for the video 'cause such gems really need any kind of media support. As a veteran TFC player i was really hyped when this game came out and still periodically revisit it to try out new stuff.
