I sincerely hope that with neoforge and fabric in communication, they can make a unified mod loader so that there can finally be no more compatibility issues for the players, and less loaders for devs to develop for.

Yeah agree. I think quilt could go off and do experiments and push the envelope and then things get standardized and adopted in NeoForge / Fabric as those new systems solidify. Hopefully these new communities build trust, respect, and awesome mods!

Another thing to take note of is Rift (the modloader for 1.13). I suppose little information is known about it but from what I gathered it failed as the forge team very hostile towards them and shut them down somehow

Got to love Neoforge, they started to change stuff (Registration and packets) to use more vanilla code....., and the native support or parchment mapping and mixins is pretty nice.

I ditched forge in 1.18 for the simple fact that fabric ran way way better. Not to mention that the mod updates came out faster when a new minecraft version would release. The create mod for forge vs fabric is night and day in performance.

I switched to Fabric for the same reason. I've been wondering if it was just me and my PC not being able to handle Forge for some weird reason, but I see it's actually a common experience. Not to mention, Sodium is on Fabric and simply can't work on Forge due to its limitations anyway.

For vanilla with client sided mods like performance based mods or minimap I ditched Forge in 1.20 because it ran like dog water in comparison to Fabric, but in bigger modpacks I still choose for Forge more than Fabric

well are you using performance mods on fabric though or not? because without they are practically the same.

I think forge still has an advantage because of 1.12.2 and 1.7.10 and older versions but fabric is a huge contender against forge but they will need to make older/pre 1.14 versions and they have even more competition

No. Fabric can't take anything from pre 1.14 versions simply because he only reason why people play those versions in the first place is for forge

Risugami's Modloader(the ancient Modloader )went only up to 1.6.2 and hardly anybody used Liteloader between 1.7 to 1.14

yeah this entire community is a circus on god. there's a lot that happens behind the scenes with these teams that makes these really hard to discuss, but giant communities like this are always going to have these kinds of events, it's inevitable.

As a player, I hate so much how there isn't a unified mod loader and basically there are multiple mod eco systems competing with each others. It is so annoying... and that's not a jab at the modders, but rather at mojang that they could've easily have made a native mod loader to standardize the mod scene long ago.

the best that Mojang has done has been datapacks for java edition. they basically work like those custom "only one command block" projects that added a big box of command blocks to your world that added in custom features, just all of it is written in code that basically just acts as the same thing but without having to be placed in the world. you can also use datapacks to make custom structures, biomes, dimensions, and world generation. they're powerful, but very limited compared to modding. however, they are a thing, and they're pretty cool, so i wouldn't say mojang Completely ditched "mod support". it's just not really actual modding. most people consider datapacks to be "only vanilla" because it's basically just using command blocks which are already in vanilla

Prehitoric Nature is one of the few reasons i will keep using forge. Its one of the best prehistoric creature mods but its stuck on 1.12.2

I still play the LOTR mod with the WOTR addon on the only version they can be 1.7.10 so I cannot leave forge because as far as I know no other mod loader is on 1.7.10 and I do not think mevans would be willing to switch it to a new mod loader

theres already mods that add layering for mods to be compatible with forge and fabric/quilt. they could just port sinitry connector and patchworkMC to neoforge

Thanks for this video. I've completely forgot all of this, even though I played so much with first versions of these iconic first mods. It brings memories back to life, that were burnt after 1.7.10 version, which was the latest I've played for a long time, partially due to my obsession with gregtech mod.

I wish the Modding community didnt split up into multiple different mod loaders. I wish it stayed as just one mod loader. So that making modded public servers more alive. I've been interested in making a Create Modpack Towny server, but been doubting if it would even be worth it or not if people would even join. Since some people (mainly players who joined MC in 2020s don't even know what mods are.)

They tried doing that for the networking, fabric just ended the partnership after they got tired of beeing strongarmed and because the code neo was proposing "was too complex"

o/ Good video. Though I like to append to this. IIRC lex was part of it in the beginning. And also flowerchild was part of the MCF team, who created the Better then wolves mod. For those who don't know this mod, Its basically creates predecessor, long before create was a thing. (I still miss BTW) Also iirc both flowerchild and Eloraam were bullied out of the project. I wasn't there when that happened but I talked to people who were. So please take my appending with a grain of salt its been a few years I talked to this person about that. (I am still talking to him xD) Also forge was only for a very short time a Modloader addon. They kinda pushed it out of the way by making a expanded clone and making both ForgeModLoader (not MinecraftForge) and Modloader compatible but slowly pushing out Modloader by adding features it did not have. Not sure if it was a hostile takeover or if the modloader dev simply joined forge, but i remember how smooth the transition was between modloader + forge to only forge.

Always good to see you speiger! The addon to modloader part was indeed very fast but its notable that it started out as an addon. And as for the hostile takeover, it was more a case of them giving the reigns to Lex

That's a lot harder than you think which is why no such project really exists for Forge. There are some projects that can run some Fabric mods on Forge, but they're not universal. It's also why Spongeforge is stuck on 1.16.5

What I take away from this video is some one had a attitude problem, and not willing to work with others. I am a Minecraft player, and not a developer. I know there are more Players then Developers. All I want to do is play Minecraft, and install mods I enjoy using for whatever version I enjoy playing. Its really that simple. If Developers can't work with each other and keep mods going then at some point players will move on to other games. There is no such thing as Developers ruling over players, and telling them what they can or can not play, and anyone thinking they can Ha. Good luck with that concept because we already removed kings trying to control Our country. I don't see it working for a video game. Blizzard tried that too, and its not working for them. Today in 2024 its ether 1.12.2, or 1.16.5 that has the most mods. The main point and fact is players/people will stay mainly in the version that has the most mods, and gives the most choice. Minecraft can keep making new versions all they want but vanilla can only be entertaining for so long till you get bored and the mods come in and make it more fun. There for it is fact that what ever version has the most choice is where Minecraft stay's alive. The question you should ask is what version of Minecraft is used for every Minecraft KZbin video? Every video on KZbin for Minecraft is for what version? I highly doubt most videos are for the current version. I would put money down its for what ever version has the most mods.

@@robertovidiuspinu3314 Never played that version yet. I just went to what ever version has the most mods. It was 1.12.2 for a while, but I am pretty sure the version 1.16.5 has the most or same amount of mods now. So it shifted over the years.

Why would neoforge losing compatibality with forge matter? Old mods for forge already dont work on newer versions and if most of the devs for forge left, people will most likely make new mods for neoforge on newer version, where you already couldnt use the old forge mods

It means they have to rewrite their code for the new modloader in addition to changes made for the newer Minecraft version. It's added work.

@@antikommunistischaktion People seem to forget that you basically had to rewrite for a new modloader every Minecraft update anyway, because Forge did nothing to try and ease the transition. I recall the 1.7>1.8 transition being very rough with the transition from TESR to block models, with many authors giving up or taking a long time to update because it was so different, and Forge offered no help in easing the transition, you just had to learn the new system straight up and forget everything you knew.

Shortly after 1.20.1 released, a friend group that I’m in started a modded server and I downloaded Fabric as well as all the mods needed for the server. I went to play and it didn’t work. I asked them what was wrong and they said that the server is using Forge. I actually cringed, and I don’t mean “wow bro that’s kinda cringe” I mean fully sighed and said “why” to myself. Downloaded Forge and who would’ve guessed, the server ran like complete ass and that server was probably the worse Minecraft experience I’ve had in a while.

That has everything to do with their server setup and nothing to do with Forge. I run Forge servers just fine.

I can attest to that forge is not as slow as people think. Its usually how the server is set up
