You knew Madonna entered the club because she had a human wall around her to keep the peasants away, and that might sound negative but just accept it for what it is. Cyndi on the other hand is the cheerleader you want in your corner. Cyndi to me is the personification of a happy old person is a work of art, but she has always been her own work of art.

Let's see- Cyndi has one of the most powerful and versatile voices in the history of music. She has won an emmy, tony, grammys, is in the songwriters hall of fame. Ssu album is now in the library hall of congress as one of the greatest albums ever recorded. She just had a ceremony for her handprints/footprints imbedded in cement at TLC, Grauman's chinese theatre last week and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She has had an amazing enduring career. And now she's finishing writing the musical score for Working Girl...for broadway 2025/26. Not too shabby

I was ten when Madonna and Cyndi Lauper both burst onto the scene. I loved them both. They both had their own thing going. Never saw them as the same at all. Don’t know where that came from. Not to pretend that female artists didn't face sexism (they obviously did), but male artists were also pitted against each other all the time during the 80s, yet no-one ever played the "sexism" card... I mean, endless teen magazine covers featured headlines such as "Duran Duran vs A-Ha !" "Michael Jackson vs Boy George !", "Prince vs Michael Jackson !"...And every Canadian growing up in the 80s is quite familiar with the "Corey Hart VS Bryan Adams !" variant of this issue ! lol ! It was a competitive era, it's the nature of the music business. Not EVERYTHING in life is about sexism and discrimination, you know...

Cuz the music world has always been dominated by men, so it’s dumb to put male against male… There’s too many!! Too many bands, too many solo artists, too many boy bands…it’s pointless to highlight “gender rivalry” when obviously they will compete for the market. Females were rare as super stars. Hardly a handful in the 60’s and 70’s and always below the males’s success. The 80’s changed that. A female solo artist could headline her own concert in a stadium ( Tina Turner in Rio for example)…alone. Her name alone was enough. That never happened before. Not in Rock music. So when Cyndi and Madonna came out almost at same time ( Cyndi came first), the styles, the hairs, the accessories, etc were very similar and a rivalry started…by media. If by then TONS of super star-female singers were around ( like now: Adele, lady Gaga, Kathy Perry, Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, etc) I doubt such rivalry woulda take place. But it was the 80’s… first decade with female power in music. The media was just beginning to learn how to deal with solo female super stars. Sad because they both were great and very different…

Yeah I’m personally tired of artists blaming bad behavior on the press or society. Everyone is responsible for their own behavior. There have been stories about Madonna for decades now. Cher also had negative experiences with her. I don’t think Lauper or Cher are the types to instigate drama like that and it’s always Madonna. She needs a diagnosis.

First off... Cyndi looks phenomenal for almost 71. She has never hated on Madonna.. she isn't like that. They were pitted against another because they were the two female pop stars who ruled the charts. Janet is #3 but she really didn't hit it huge until 1986. Whitney too. Both were talented but I agree Cyndi was a better vocalist while Madonna ultimately surpassed her in hits and longevity. They were just two different types of artists. Madonna was super ambitious, wanted to be number one, and was willing to do whatever she thought would take her there and keep her there. It certainly worked for her. Thing is, I don't think either of them have any regrets, they did it their way and made timeless music in the process.

There are sooo many media-created rivalries between artists that really don't exist when you speak with the actual artists. With that said, to Cyndi's point- Madonna didn't really like anyone, especially other female artists.
