The Kissing Booth (2018) is another one of these teen romance / drama movies in the vein of Sierra Burgess, and follows Elle, who struggles to reconcile her growing feelings for Noah, who is the perfect-heart-throb-in-every-way-and-if-you-don’t-believe-it-you-must-be-gay, with her lifelong friendship with his brother Lee.
If you’ve seen more than two films in this genre, then you’ve already seen this one, because it does very little that could be considered original, and lazy writing and cliches abound.
Probably the film’s biggest offense though, are elements that kids these days might call “problematic”. It relies on some very outdated ideas about how relationships work, female agency and the power of women to save violent bad-boys from themselves. The sort of ideas that you should not be encouraging in an audience of impressionable teenage girls.

If you enjoy my videos and would like to support my channel, do consider becoming a Patron: www.patreon.com/CynicalReviews KZbin just demonetised the video (after I'd already made it public, for f*ck's sake). EDIT: Remonetised. Yay! Sorry this took a bit longer than usual. I hope you find it worth the wait. To make up for it, I'm planning on releasing three more videos by the end of this month. P.S. Hitler Ice Cream was indeed a real thing. Discovering that made sitting through this film multiple times worth it. And yes, I know her name is pronounced "El". My bad. I still don't care.

Feeding girls/guys the “I can change you” tripe is what encourages people to stay in abusive relationships. This movie is awful
@turtal2595
@turtal2595 4 жыл бұрын
well technically you can take part in changing em although its a gamble. If you dump them and people keep on dumping em for the same reason maybe they can change then? Edit: At least you would be saving some poor soul experiencing being in an abusive relationship, and you'd have the experience to look out for signs that a relationship is abusive and leave. its a win win...I guess?

You're more likely to change them by turning them down. The reason people become assholes is because they don't see any incentive in being kind and see incentive in being cruel. Remove the incentive of girls getting with guys who choose to be assholes while spouting that nonsense through informing girls of the fact that "no you can't change him you dimwit" and BANG less assholes.

Almost every Wattpad bad/punk boy is a controlling, manipulative abuser with anger issues. They also flirt and sleep with every girl they can, but are oddly possessive of the protagonist. It’s weird.

I was thinking the same thing. Noah says, 'He is protecting her because she has no experience with boys' but how will she if he keeps on beating dudes who she wants to date. Also, he keeps on fucking kissing random girls but she isn't allowed to? What assholery is this? This whole movie gives me a headache.

I had a few self-imposed rules, but then again I was (still am in the uni) the insufferable know-it-all of the class. So I guess I’m weird. My main rules are pretty reasonable though: 1) Meth, not even once. 2) Don’t get arrested (I need my record to be squeaky clean to be able to work in my field). 3) Don’t start a relationship just so you wouldn’t be alone. That’s how you end up with the first loser you see and later wonder how you missed all those red flags. Learn to live with yourself first and don’t settle for a sub-par partner. 4) No MLMs or any other pseudoscience BS.

@Mitters
@Mitters 5 жыл бұрын
Without being controlling, I totally get why people don't want their friends dating their siblings. My brother has dated a few of my friends, and I am no longer friends with them. Not my choice either, they just didn't want to come over anymore because "they might run into my brother". And didn't want to see me because I "reminded them of him". Etc. Etc. When they'd come over to hang with me, they'd either hang out with my brother instead, or he'd join us. Its also weird to have your friend knowing what your sibling is doing at all times. It's very intrusive. And vice versa. I dated a few of my brother's friends. Same sort of deal. My brother and I share tons of friends, and we all like to hangout. But it's nice to be able to have friends that your DONT share. It also makes you feel less significant in your friend's life. You don't know if they're coming over to see you, or your sibling. And the 3 of you hanging out feels weird ? Sharing isn't always caring. The brother in this film went about it in an INSANE way, but also, growing up under a golden boy can be difficult. It's likely his parents constantly compared him, his peers would as well, and the teachers definitely did. My brother is an actual genius, and in school teachers would constantly tell me how much they "expected" from me, because he was so intelligent. He was an All-star athlete, and helped our team to maybe district championships. I am a potato. And now he's in the armed forces, and serving our country. My parents couldn't be more proud. All I can say is, I'm super happy he has a gf now that isn't one of my friends. I've lost enough of them. And he lives far enough away, that I'm not constantly compared to his "greatness". :P needless to say I sympathize with the brother 😂, but he's also a whiney cuck the whole movie. In all my situations above, I am insanely proud of my brother. I love him, and spending time with him. And I even introduced the girls he ended up dating. And if they couldn't be friends with me after they broke up, that's on them. :P I guess they weren't great friends to begin with right ? #endrant

That's a girls worst nightmare. The movie tries to play this moment off as a romantic kick-starter, but to women, this scenario ends with us in a body bag and a nationwide search.

So at my high school, there's a bunch of these hooks on the wall in the girl's bathroom, and all the girls will put their purses with their pads and tampons on the wall, and just leave them there at the school until they need to be refilled. If you don't have one or something, you can just take one as well. So, some guys snuck into the girl's bathroom after school and took a few of the purses and looked through them and stuff. So they found some medication in one of the girl's bag, prescribed medication for her really bad cramps, but there's this policy at school where if you need medication you need to inform the principal of it, so the guys reported her. Now she was only 12 and she had only had her period for a few months, plus the principal was a guy, so she was just too embarrassed to say anything,(personally I think her parents should have told the school about the medication) so she got detention for like a week, but that wasn't really that big a deal to her. Those guys told the whole school that she had drugs or something like that, and everyone believed them for some reason, and she got bullied so bad that she ended up leaving our school at the end of the year. I hate when people make up stories about people and end up making a kid depressed or suicidal and there are no repercussions. This happened a lot where all these rumours were floating around and you never knew what was real or fake.

SO MANY ALLUSIONS TO NOAH BEING AN ABUSER a) Nobody in that girl's life wants her to be in a relationship with Noah, although they say that it's her choice, they actively tell Ellie she should stay away from him. b) When Lee walks in, why the hell would he immediately jump to his BROTHER HITTING A GIRL IN THE FACE SO HARD THAT SHE BLED unless that's something he would be capable of? 3) Noah clearly gives no shits about consent. He beat those guys up because he's extremely possessive. 🐄) SHE DIDN'T WANT TO GET IN THE CAR, SHE WAS THREATENED. Noah repeatedly resorts to yelling and violence to get his way. e) Noah's reason for being obsessed with Ellie is that she won't fawn over him. He is a narcissist.

Frankly, I didn't get all the whining in this video about him getting into fights with other dudes. (& the whining about it from the female main character either). What's the problem? He is a man after all, plus he was only getting into fights, when another dude did something really inappropriate to a girl. It seems that in the West (America & Europe) all people becoming more & more pussies & they try to make everyone else pussies too. I grew up in russian culture & in such situations there would be definitely a fight & not much talking. A couple of punches & the molester knows how to behave in the future. Plus other people around get a clear message too & will think twice before doing crap. I'm all for it, even though I'm a woman. Also him screaming at the girl ("get in the car!"), was justified imo. He just stood up for her like a man & she just walks off & ignores him. Damn ungrateful, if you ask me. Btw...I didn't like the movie (since it's a retarded story), but those aspects were totally fine imo & made the movie at least a little watchable.

@@kaorutooman4747 the fighting/defending wasn't bad. As for him keeping guys from asking her out might have been because teenage boys are degenerates to begin with. As Elle is almost like a family member, it does make sense. Older brothers keep guys away from their sisters. Noah really might not have realized his feelings for Elle until the kiss. But if he thought of her as family, why did he kiss her to begin with. Noah controlling about Elle dating, not bad. But the initial kiss, and not telling his own brother is a) weird b) bad.

Yes, high schoolers are already having sex but that is not a good thing. Even as a young child people tend to think that they can think rationally but even with a good upbringing it's difficult to be sure. How can a person have they right to agency when they are not developed enough to understand what is going on around them. It's hypocritical to condemn terrible things like statutory rape and pedophilia, but not sex under a certain age, which is debatable but probably above 18

Cenoreira It really fucking doesn’t. It’s a film. It’s like watching a superhero film and thinking you can fly because Superman does it. The film is cringe, but even more cringe is people seriously believing that people emulate what they see in films. I loved Requiem for a Dream, particularly Harry and Marion. I didn’t end up becoming a prostitute of stealing my mum’s TV for heroin money, funny that. It’s a weirdly conservative idea that liberals have for some reason adopted, that “films cause violence,” etc. That’s not what happens at all, and people who are prone to being in abusive relationships often have major issues themselves (I should know, I end up in toxic friendships from time to time due to the time with my abusive mum making me think certain things are okay when they aren’t/forgiving things that really go over the line and even thinking I’m the only one who’s done something wrong, when the other person clearly did wrong too, and in some cases, deliberate damage.) In my case, I have to resolve the issues that make me attractive to particularly female narcissists, which I suspect have to do with my mum being one/my experience living just under her and having no one else to model what a healthy relationship with other women should be like. Add bullying/isolation to that, and I also have underdeveloped social skills, so in theory, I know what to do, but I am afraid to take action if it involves talking to people. So, a film like this can’t “make” you think you can fix someone. If you don’t have the family history of abusive dynamics and grew up in a normal/healthy/loving home, the chances of you getting into an abusive relationship are pretty low (it can happen, but chances are you know how you should be treated and you don’t have major self-esteem/isolation/trauma-related mental health issues the predator can learn and later use against you.) You have to have some vulnerability, because a predatory person won’t pursue anything with someone they can’t manipulate or exploit. It’s like animal predation - they select the sick/frail ones/alone ones, because the strong ones will run or defend themselves/have a support network to defend them (and that’s another thing, if you share friends, the manipulator will absolutely turn them against you by telling them lies.) So, TL;DR films don’t influence much of anything. Life experiences do. There are patterns to these things that Tumblrinas, with their limited understanding of psychology, don’t understand. So, while this film is absolute garbage, it’s just a story. You need to calm down. I’ve actually been in highly abusive dynamics (mostly family and some friendships, although I did have one guy I was talking to/romantically interested in show signs of being pathologically controlling, but it stands), and the film is just a film. It has no bearing on real life.
