They probably wanted a language that viewers couldn't read to make that word look mysterious. (Also, on the control panel of Darth Vader from Star Wars is written in Hebrew, only this is absolute nonsense, and some of the letters are even reversed there. Fans of the series came up with an idea that it is a code, and they even "solved" it, but as a Hebrew speaker, I see that it is just someone smashed a Hebrew keyboard.)

One person explained it in a way that makes sense - the authors are subs or have dominance fantasies in the submissive role, but they have no clue what an actual Dom/Sub relationship is like and think the power dynamic is more real and less consentual than it would be in real life. Particularly, they confuse "subordinate" with "enjoys being treated like garbage all the time."
@sleepysera4 жыл бұрын
@@OtakuUnitedStudio "but they have no clue what an actual Dom/sub relationship is like" And why would they need to know? What they are writing is a FANTASY, not a real life romance guide. It doesn't have to be realistic. It isn't meant to be realistic. Any fictional story is a little fantasy to lose yourself in for a short while, actually not unlike a BDSM scene. Both very explicitly rely on the fact that the participants know that it isn't reality, because otherwise it would be abuse and/or sexual assault. Now ofc it becomes more of a problem when the author is convinced they wrote something that actually should be followed, as in the case of E.L. James, but I doubt the majority of writers are as self-absorbed as she is.

But then there’s the OTHER side of badly written fanfics where the only point of the story is for the main characters to get together in various levels of intimacy and cringe. While the writing quality on AO3 tends to be miles above what you find on wattpad, very little of it deals with subject matters that would be considered easily marketable or safe for TV. No matter which fandom you look at, the amount of psychological trauma, all forms of abuse, extreme kink, mental issues and non-standard gender identities and sexualities and so on is absolutely staggering. It is MUCH harder to find a popular enough heteronormative little story you can make a few quick bucks with by turning it into a movie on AO3 because of that. But that is what sells and doesn't scare investors off, and unlike AO3, wattpad is full of that, so that's where they look for the next big thing.

These people who make “teen movies” are so out of touch, that even my teen sister who is as basic as it can get, finds them not even laughably bad. Are these people who make these movies even human beings? Aliens pretending to act human? That’s a real question no cap.
@ArdonTHS4 жыл бұрын
I don't even think aliens are the reason why, as I'm pretty sure aliens know that real humans do not act like the "humans" in teen movies. In all seriousness, the reason why is because these movies are easy money. These types of movies are cheap to make and require no effort to produce. It's why these movies are filled with cliches, plot holes, unlikable characters, and unsettling implications (especially with this movie being based on a fucking FANFICTION). Plus, even if the target audience hates them, it doesn't matter in the end because the studios that make them and the companies that distribute them get to reap all the rewards, A.K.A. (obtaining the viewer's money). So, to the film companies and studios, it means nothing if their target audience hates or shit talks their movies, if making these movies means getting tons and tons of money, then it's absolutely justified to them.
@sleepysera4 жыл бұрын
Most of these fanfiction-based movies were written by actual teen girls, including this one. So in a way, they are the exact opposite of "out if touch" - they are the actual fantasies of lonely teen girls. But that's the thing - they are *fantasies* and not reality. And I think most teens are aware that fantasy and reality do not tend to overlap, and the sexy bad boy won't fall for you and change his ways if you are a boring basic wallflower with no other interests than books in real life. I'm not saying no one on wattpad has an actual boyfriend because ofc that would be silly, but the readers wattpad in general and these teenage heartthrob AU fanfics in specific attract, tend to be of a certain kind. Maybe your sister just isn't one of them.

I remember reading After when I was a Wattpader, wondering why it was so popular : Terrible writing, bad grammar and one-dimensional characters. That and the glorified emotional abuse made me want to hit my laptop's screen. I believe After is so popular just because it's a Harry Styles fanfiction, nothing more. I then realised that Wattpad is full of terrible stories with bad boys and one-direc fanfiction that make you want to throw up. Avoid Wattpad folks, for your own sanity.
@athanasia7914 жыл бұрын
@Moonwa La Worgen Jesus so true. I used to write a rants book about Wattpad (especially the awful werewolf stories, cliches and plagiarism) and a book reviews. Wattpad is full of creepy 1-D and Justin Bieber fanfics, along with ridiculous bad boys and mafia love stories. Wattpad is no place for a sane brain. Speaking of which, wattpaders can't take criticism. It happened to me more than once, but the fans attacked me and a few authors called me a cyber bully. Wattpad also deletes you if you criticise them or touch their precious authors. I legit shared what a popular author said to me, exposing her narcissistic behaviour but not mentioning her name, and got deleted by the site because she had more than 250k followers. Wattpad isn't a safe place and there is no freedom of speech there. Don't use it. Total waste of time. And from what I've heard from a friend who still uses it, the site has become worse.

theres an indonesian equivalent to After, called Dear Nathan. similar trope and tragic backstory (at least i think so; DN was a hot topic for a hot minute so i knew what was going on, and had a movie adaptation as well. also, in me experience, best way to find good stories to read is through connection, not algorithm. it's a broken record at this point, but there *_are_* good, well written stories on wattpad. but since theyre often buried, not to mention scarce, best way to find other stories like those is to find at least ONE author who did the job well and whose story ye liked, then look through their personal reading list. there'll still be garbage amongst them, but the gems will be easier to find that way bc usually capable authors read stories from other capable authors/befriend them. so thats one way.

It's stuff like this that gives fanfics a bad rep and while there is... a *massive* cesspool of fics to sift through a lot are very good. And what I mean by 'bad rep' is I get really uncomfortable telling people I write them because I don't want it to be assumed that I write things like... this. It's my passion for writing fanfics that helped me realize I'm meant to create things. I love experimenting. That being said, I'm not the best and I'm still learning, but that's what I love about fics. I get to test my creativity by coming up with new stories about books I love. So... here's to the amazing fics, the ones that are long or short but tell amazing stories which you binge in mere hours. Here's to the great fics, which still have something to improve on but are ultimately going places. Here's to the abandoned fics and the authors that write them. We love you, miss you, and hope you're doing well. Here's to the questionable-but-helped-scratch-an-itch fics that helped sate our desires for more content about stories or characters we love. And here's to the bad fics. The ones that are entertaining to watch be a mess, either by design or misguided ideas. Thanks for being here. We learned a lot.

So, here’s what’s happening that causes all of these movies: the authors are always women, and without having any understanding of it, they are Subs, like-to-be-demeaned subs, but they also want to be loved, and they don’t understand that in a Dom/Sub relationship that that dynamic can exist. These women are instead spreading the idea that actual abusive relationships are just fine. They need to get dominated by someone who knows what they’re doing and can teach them what it’s actually all about. But good luck to any Dom who tries it because these women will get attached like one of their protagonists.

That... Actually explains a lot, so basically these women have a fetish that they have no idea how to deal with so they write shitty fanfic and then get lucky and these horrible movies get made? Holy fuck, this just makes me more worried for how the BDSM community is seen, and worried for inexperienced Subs that might bump into abusive Doms. They'll think this is what a Dom/Sub relationship is like so they won't recognize the abuse and might get stuck in a toxic relationship with a Dom that doesn't respect them
@fightingmedialounge5194 жыл бұрын
I doubt that prime especially since these typically do point the suspicious behavior from the heroines. What's more likely us that they love drama and knows that it sells, so they make their relationships as toxic and dramatic as possible in order to get attention and have fun
