Our African Brothers and African Sisters did not have a problem with this! They didn't denigrate any of the aforementioned actors and actress! They didn't boycott their movies! Araminta's (Harriet Tubman's) grandmother "Modesty" was brought to America on a slave ship. She was owned by the Pattison Plantation. She gave birth to Araminta's mother Harriet (Rit) Green around 1790. Actors and actresses generally go through an auditions process to get a particular role. Some studios select their own principle protagonist, based upon their exceptional abilities to bring characters to life! Cynthia Erivo is a great actress, singer and dancer! Regarding what she allegedly said or didn't say, some of us talk about each other! Some of us excoriate each other! Booker T. Washington referred to it as "The Crabs In The Barrel Syndrome!" Maceo Leon Thomas Denzel Washington, Forrest Whittaker, Don Cheadle, (even Jennifer Hudson), Morgan Freeman & Will Smith, are ‘A List’ actors -INTERNATIONALLY respected, multi-Award-winning and accomplished actors with several DECADES of film, television and stage/theatre experience. So this argument goes beyond Cynthia Erivo’s ignorance and disrespect toward ADOS and their unique history. There were far more qualified American actresses that should have played the Harriet Tubman role. Additionally, Cynthia Erivo, despite her lovely singing voice, is soooo not qualified or vocally soulful or powerful enough or capable of the Black American Church Gospel sound to play Aretha Franklin for National Geographic, a British owned company (UK). Cynthia is the “It” girl who is supported by Oprah Winfrey and other major players so she will receive many opportunities that should go to other American actresses. Three of Cynthia’s possible EGOT distinction all come from one American production-“The Color Purple” which is required reading for American youth. Cynthia E. did not even read Alice Walker’s award-winning book, “The Color Purple” before acting in the UK 🇬🇧 theatre production. That book 📚 is required reading for American youth. She is ignorant about the unique American chattel slavery system and the vestiges and continued historical injustices. I personally know Black American actors that struggle for roles so it is more than understandable that people would resent the ‘Red Carpet’ being rolled out and the heavy promotion of Cynthia E., a 1st generation British woman of Nigerian descent.

The lived experience of #ADOS is not something you can study and learn in acting school. Either it's in you or it isn't. The fact that Producers chose to cast a non-#ADOS woman, who has previously, publicly insulted Blk Americans, is not only disrespectful to Ancestor Queen Mother Harriet Tubman but also highly offensive to her living progeny. @@adamamunu3046 they still will have to do the work. Just like Denzel did the work for Malcolm X. She can do the work but she will never make the deeper connection as to what those roots are.

@@juschill1 I hear thd sentiment but I do not understand why you think other black people are unable to connect fully with these stories. Excellent acting requires this. I respectfully say that stepping into the shoes of ANYONE to tell THEIR specific story i.e Harriet is a privilege and not an automatic right, and I would like to think that all members of the African diaspora step into these types of roles with this in mind. We often talk about syerotypes and division and I just feel that telling each other's stories can foster greater unity and empathy. Ehy wkn't ados support that? I do not support Cynthia's anti black American sentiments. I just hope the sacredness of the story she is telling will allow her to understand where she went wrong.

So they got a black actress, non-american from a country that has very strict gun control laws. I wonder if this Foreigner believes in the American Civil Right to keep and bear arms??? Also known as the Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights. Did the filmmakers for this film send the actress to a firearms training academy? And give her the same training in Firearms that actor Keanu Reeves received prior to his performance in the films John Wick? Press Reports say that he spent six to eight months at the gun range training with professionals so that his gun handling skills on the screen would be accurately portrayed. Halle Berry also received this same firearms training prior to her performance in the latest John Wick film. As a black gun owner who knows the history of racist gun control laws in the United States this aspect of the film Harriet is important to me. White conservatives are far more reliable in defending the gun civil rights of black people. Than the racist white liberals who write and support racist gun control laws. Black Guns Matter!!!

Well, did you know that despite the way it smeared the characters of: the great Rosa Parks and the great Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, it was number one at the box office for two weeks? That's right two weeks! And, as a result of the numbers who came out to see it, shows me that people cared more about this stupid movie than standing up for the dignity of the great Rosa Parks and the great Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr! "The Great Harriet Tubman" was so awesome!!! Amongst the many, many, many things that she did for us, in 1903 she donated the property she had purchased for "African American Aged And Poor" to the AME Zion Church. On June 23, 1908 the AME Zion Church had a day long dedication for the home, which they renamed "The Harriet Tubman Home." The celebration included: a parade, prayers and speeches, a band concert, a dinner, an evening reception and a dance. The great Harriet Tubman was the guest of honor. When she was asked to speak she said this, "I did not take up this work for my own benefit, but for those of my race who need help. The work is now well started and I know God will raise up others to take care of the future." Simply amazing! Taken from "Harriet Tubman: Road To Freedom" by Catherine Clinton, pages 209 and 210. I can't wait to see "Harriet!" I will purchase tickets for elementary and high school students to see "Harriet."
