"He's younger than you".
I've gotta admit, I didn't see it coming.
She caught me off-guard, all right.
You couldn't tell, though, could you?
As you've learned by now, I'm rather skilled at hiding my feelings.
You see, the thing with feelings is they have
this quiet way of sneaking up on you when you least expect it.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
Like with Liz.
Who would've thought, of all the women I've known...
...the one I let my guard down with delivers the knockout punch.
Ironic.
Calendar word.
"Dorie!"
Hi. - Hello, Alfie.
I haven't seen you in ages.
Maybe because you stopped calling.
I know. Things were getting a bit too...
Don't bother explaining. I'm way past needing excuses.
All right. No, you know what? I want to explain.
What? You had your fill of me?
Someone cuter came along? I don't need to hear it, Alfie.
Look, Dorie... - Really.
Look, Dorie...
What happens with me is...
I don't know, I get...
When it gets too... Not close but something like that
I start to feel... Not stifled,
not trapped, but something like that.
And I... And...
You know? You know what I mean?
Did that make...? Did that make any sense?
I think it has to make sense to you more than me at this point.
Yeah, fair enough.
I need to go. He'll be waiting for me.
Dorie.
I'm sorry.
Good luck, Alfie.
I warned them all from the beginning.
I always said something along the lines of,
''I must advise you,
I am stamped with an invisible warning.
I will not commit. I will never marry.''
Despite my best efforts, I'm beginning to feel some small cracks
in my faux finish.
You know, when I look back on my little life,
and all the women I've known...
...I can't help but think about...
...all that they've done for me...
...and how little I've done for them.
How they looked after me, cared for me...
...and I repaid them by never returning the favour.
Yeah.
I used to think I had the best end of the deal.
What have I got?
Really?
Some money in my pocket.
Some nice threads. Fancy car at my disposal.
And I'm single.
Unattached. Free as a bird.
I don't depend on nobody.
Nobody depends on me.
My life's my own.
But I don't have peace of mind.
And if you don't have that, you've got nothing.
So...
So, what's the answer? That's what I keep asking myself.
What's it all about?
You know what I mean?

I came back to this ending at 35 years old. Not a 25 year old looking for the next good time. I rmenerbr living in the city then and relating to this scene so much, such questions I faced as a man and who I wanted to be. Who I wanted to spend my days with. At 35, a woman I love and 2 kids later, I hope any words of wisdom I can spread to another young guy looking at himself in the mirror is this. Life goes on. Lonely nights come and they go, and it’s always the darkest before the dawn. Keep moving.

The level of empathy I feel with this scene, today, miles away from the easy bright days we all cherish in our lonely mature lives, still young yet already wounded, as time pasess by a lonely quiet night, an endless roar of nostalgia, seems imposible to put into words to me. Hope you are never forced to admire from distance what you once had so close but were too blind to really apreciate it.

I got regrets. I reminisce alot. I have a good memory, unfortunately. Just the other day, I was thinking how a time over twenty years ago seems like i can still almost reach out and touch it......yet I can't. I know I just have to accept I didn't take hold of what I had then and lived it to the full, and now just have to forget about it all. But it's hard, as now and then something always comes up, a song, a movie, that makes me feel the time gone by that I have so much nostalgia for now.

Usually I prefer wordy films. And perhaps this would work were it not for the original. But I watched the 1966 Alfie yesterday, and Michael Caine says more in his final scene with a fraction of the dialogue than this earnest, over polite, over explained version attempting to convey the self same sentiment. Sometimes less is more.

Michael Caine is incredible. But i think Jude Law uses better techniques to convey emotion... Pauses... Facial expressions... Body language... Michael Caine generally is very stiff... But each one has their great impact in the end

You know what's the saddest thing is yes the original one is more artistic , poetic , actually it is, this version is what Is actually happening the emptiness , the fact that we won't commit is something better comes along we will trade it in a heartbeat , Jude laws Alfie is cruel, selfish UNhappy in so many ways , his finally monologue said it clear it was clearly ahead of his time , we are all alfies dating or being in a relationship it's outdated we have every tool to not committed to pretend but we don't have a piece of mind in my case I see how I used them how much of an asshole I been looking for what according to me I deserve but I don't think we don't have a piece of mind so this monologue it's raw soulless but now it makes perfect sebses we all are him

I understand that he was very upset about losing a woman that he really liked as well as his friends and the possible child. OK really I’m going to say that his one mistake in this movie was sleeping with his best friends girl. How very true. Even more so than ever, MeToo and rampant feminism have spurned a generation of loneliness. Thank heavens I am in my mid 30s, I have lived almost 23 years womanising and now I am with someone I really want to spend the rest of my life with and the ironic thing is, she is a woman I dated 11 years prior. Bumped into her three months ago and we rekindled our relationship. As for the scene. It lacks the emotional punch of Caine’s original, no dog at the end.

Also, cue the standard that she’s no good if she wants or needs anything from me, she’s no good if she doesn’t want or need anything from me. He just doesn't have the charm of Michael Cain. Cain's version didn't lecture the audience, the dialogue kept Alfie focused on himself and his new, somewhat cheerful realization that he needed peace of mind and couldn't get it by using people. That is very different from a condescending lecture. This is one remake that should never have happened. Awful!
