CZ 712 G3 Target 12ga Semi-Auto Shotgun Review

A quick search online and I've found the standard G3 with wood furniture for under $500! Plus CZ has a $75 rebate on their semi auto shotguns. Looks like a great hunting gun!

I have a CZ 712 G2 target, that i picked up last month for $540 so you might still be able to find a g2 floating around for less than 800. I find its very soft shooting especially with an added recoil pad. I have 300 shells through it and no malfunctions. My question would be if the G3 heavy pistion would also work in the G2 as it looks like the gas system is the same as the old model. Might be worth looking into.

CZ is at the top of my list for budget shotguns. I’ve had incredible luck in regards to reliability. We’ve got a 12ga woodcock, 12ga teal target, 612 Target, and 720 G2 (youth model) in the safe. They all have their purpose and we love shooting them. These are great guns to have in the safe for friends and family that want to have fun breaking clays. The 712 G3 Target may be on my short list of semi autos to add to the collection.

Great review Steve. I seriously looked at the G3 Target. But I went with the Weatherby Orion simply because I enjoy shooting an O/U on clays. I'm thinking about buying another auto for late season ducks, and have narrowed it down to the G3 or the Impala Plus Nero. Thanks for the review

I have a Masai Mara. They pattern amazingly well out of the box. Mine does not like any loads lighter than 1oz. With a falconstrike pad, it handles recoil very well. Able to customize fit with included shims. I think it's a little too expensive for what it is, but I did not hesitate to pick up a Gordion for my son. Additionally, Retay customer service is top notch. I had an issue with an included choke. They mailed out a new one free of charge to me before I was off the phone with them.

@@adensmore100what did you end up going with? I have a CZ Teal Target that’s basically the Redhead Premier Target. Purchased in January and I’ve about 2,800 shells through it. Great gun, and it fits me great.

Hey can you tell me why my Browning maxus 3 1/2 chambered shotgun will no longer cycle dove/target loads. I have had it for awhile and I can't figure it out. I put a surecycle in my gun but that did not help at all. Any info would help a ton

You have to use ammo with at least a 1-1/8th payload of shot. I have a friend that has the 1st gen maxus and his won’t cycle shells under 1-1/8oz. I mean any 3.5” chamber 12ga requires a minimum of 1-1/8oz shotshell. Also check the gas ports in the barrel where the silver gas piston seats. They’ll clog up if it gets too dirty causing cycling issues. If either of those won’t help then I recommend contacting Browning

@J.C._80 thank you for your reply. That is exactly what I have the first generation of Browning Maxus. I have tried 1 1/8 oz payloads before with no luck of cycling. I recently bought a case of federal hi-bird with 1 1/4 oz to see if those will cycle. Also could it be worn out parts like the piston or seals of some sort?

@@shawngriffiths9480 I honestly couldn’t say but I personally have never seen a gas piston fail. If anyone should have a gas piston fail it would be an exhibition shooter but I’ve also never heard them say they’ve had a failure either and they shoot up to tens of thousands of rounds every year with the same shotguns which all use the same internals. Winchester SX2, SX3, SX4, Browning Silver, Gold, Maxus Gen 1 and 2 all use the same internals, with the exception of a few of them being redesigned and renamed. I would take the gun completely apart and just check everything thoroughly and clean the crap out of it and if it still won’t work then I’d definitely call or contact Browning. The recoil spring tube could be gunked up as well as those gas ports I mentioned. There’s several things that could be wrong with it

@J.C._80 I will tare it down and look. I have replaced the spring in the butt stock with the sure cycle system which was suppose to help but didn't. I have talked to browning before and they kind of told me the same thing about the 1 1/8 oz loads. All I know is that it's irritating when your trying to shoot doves and your semiautomatic turns into a single shot.

@@shawngriffiths9480 I’ve tried the sure cycle system before but to only find it was a waste of money. I get it that it’s supposed to be rust proof and what not but I’m not out there keeping my buttstock submerged in water. My gun started jamming with the sure cycle so I pulled it out and tossed it in the trash. Tried a Wolff recoil spring and never had another issue. Have you thought about getting a 20ga for dove or for just in general? I switched to a 20ga about 6yrs ago. With modern shells now there’s really no need for a heavy 12ga anymore IMO. I’ve taken dove, ducks and geese with it over 60yds. I mean if that Maxus if you giving you fits then you could always sell it and replace it😉 let it be someone else’s headache. Lol

The gunstore bro told me CZ shotguns are built in Turkey. Not a total deal breaker but it came as a little surprise and slightly turned me off on CZ shotguns. They look better on line than they do in person.

How is the CZ after several thousand rounds? And can it go it through a weekend shoot of 600 rounds without any cleaning or issues, I know beretta A400 has 0 issues with this task

I’ve had a 712 G2 for 4 years. Thousands upon thousands of rounds through it with no problems an just regular cleaning. I’ve had 4 people use it on a sporting clays course, putting 400+ rounds over the course of a few hours with no malfunctions. I’d highly recommend one.

That is what the beretta was designed for. For my purposes the CZ 712 will work fine as it will never face that kind of use. I use mine as a teaching tool. For beginning shotgunners it’s perfect to get started on. If I were going to shoot competition I would go with the beretta a400 excel no question.
