I have lived in Prague in 2007 for six months. I have managed to learn a Czech language, and travel all around the country. Czechia was the first ever foreign country for me to visit and live in. I was 20 years old then. Despite being literally russian Ivan (born and raised in Tomsk, Siberia), I was so welcomed everywhere. Before going there some russians told me - "don't tell anyone you're russian, they gonna beat you up", and other bs like that. I am 37 now, and I've since lived in six other countries (five of which EU members) - I have never since experienced so much welcome, so much kindness, so much love from locals. Czechs are the sweetest, funniest and most open-hearted people ever. A do ted' miluju Cesko, miluji Cesi, porad mluvim cestinou, kdyz nekoho z Cech potkam. Cesy jsou vsude :D A jste vsechni roztomile lidy!

I would add one thing - ANO, the populist Babis party, will never actually be against EU. As the video said - 80% of our trade is with the EU, Babis is an agrobaron with ownership of a big chunk of our agriculture. He only acts as anti-EU on the home turf, while in reality, his people in the EU pairliment and on international stage, lean havily pro-EU, as it benefits him greatly.

Czechia was a province of larger empires for several centuries, so it is easy for populists there to exploit every move from the EU as another instance of "foreign bureaucrats are telling us what to do as in the old days." Czechia is too small to have a real impact on EU policy, so not many people consider that those decisions are also made by Czech bureaucrats and politicians in Brussels (and Prague). The second thing, which you mentioned in the video, is that salaries are seriously lacking in Czechia. Some years ago, it had the worst ratio in Europe of GDP/Capita vs salaries; meaning the work being done is fairly valuable, but the salaries don't show it. In most analysis, it was said that Czechs are just too shy or afraid of their employers and don't ask for more even if they could and should. That they are more engineers than salesmen and marketers. The low salaries, especially compared to the direct neighbours Austria and Germany, lead to massive frustration and bitterness. Well, at least the low salaries cause the lowest unemployment in the EU.. Also, if you talk about EU subsidies as A, you should say B as well; B being Western companies - not only from Western Europe - snatching up everything that wasn't nailed down (and most of what was nailed down, too) in the 90s for peanuts. I consider this a massive failure of the economic transition after Communist rule. A longer transition period and stricter conditions for foreign investors would have been better in the long run I think. This foreign ownership of the vast majority of the economy causes billions of Crowns/Euros to be sent abroad every year as "dividends". Money that is lacking here.

I'm Czech and I'm strongly pro-EU, but I think I understand the concerns some of my compatriots have. I would say that the general discontent is connected to historical trauma. Any time in the past when we trusted somebody, we were betrayed. This happened many times even before the 20th century, but we got a combo of the West not moving a single muscle to help us. You mentioned 1938, but deslite the guarantees that they will ensure suverenity of the remaining rump state, the west simply decided to not care at all when Germany occupied the rest of Czechoslovakia in 1939. Then there was the Communist coup in 1948 and protests and minor insurrections in 1953, the West didn't move a muscle. In 1968 we were occupied by our allies, yet another betrayal and the West still didn't do anything effective. After the Velvet Revolution, we got to join NATO only through riding the wave with Poland and I am certain that Czechia would not have succeeded on its own, the West was still sceptic. The thing is that we don't generally believe outside powers that they mean well and generally are scared of foreign influences, we got burnt one too many times already (which is why I think that support for Euro is this low). And now anecdotal evidence: When I was in the United Kingdom through Erasmus (pre Brexit), the host family tried to explain to me that they have warm water and plumbing and that I don't have to look for a well to get water. In Austria, the owner of a hostel I was staying in tried to speak with me in broken Russian because we "can't speak anything else than that Russian dialect of yours". One of my friends works in Belgium and she told me that the Belgians see us as basically Russians with some quirks and would rather let us be annexed by Russia than let Belgium get dragged into a conflict. Various other friends have similar stories to tell. I like the idea of the EU, but I feel that most of the Western populace still sees us as a buffer to be sacrificed so they are safe when push comes to shove. This sceptic view is then enforced by opportunist politicians which run on platforms of "we'll show those bureaucrats!" and "we will protect you from them", which creates a feedback loop. I'm sorry but even though I know that things change, we are still seen as a fringe of the EU by many. And unlike others, we don't have the need to entrust others unless we are certain they mean well. And given these experiences, I'm certain that we are far too removed from actually believing fully in this project. My generation may change this, but I don't see it happening in the next 10 years.

Checia needs to research EU before they join. I did such major research, and the European Union has plans for all their member countries. Please use caution, not everyone has your best interest at heart. Since when did Germans and EU members be concerned with anyone but themselves. Sounds a bit like the UK, where a lot of Brits before Brexit, blamed the EU for a lot of the wrongs in the country, even though a lot of what is wrong in the country had little or nothing to do with the EU and much of the problems were created by national governments. In the case of the UK, they are learning that the hard way with Brexit and many are starting to realise that most of the problems in the UK had little to do with the EU and a lot more to do with national policy. It's understandable really, it's far easier to use an outsider as a scapegoat, but it's not very productive in getting real change done that can benefit the people, which if the EU and its members work together, we can achieve a lot more that will benefit the people across all EU members. I do also agree that big reforms of the EU are needed so it can function better for all it's members, that could mean some integration in some key areas so we're more effective in protecting our interest, especially being that a lot of our weakness we see in the EU is that many EU countries are pulling in multiple directions, which is weakening us all

As a czech, good job! But I would add one more thing - A lot of people are also sceptical about europe, because of the migrant crisis (not ukrainians). A lot of people were scared that the EU will just command us into taking a lot of refuges, but none really wants them here. We can see now, that we dont want to follow western europe in this. Also my mom always says, that bcs of EU the food quality went downhill. In the past products tasted better, and everything was more local. Idk how true is this, but I know we czechs and other eastern countries are getting products with the "second quality", from the worse ingredients than in the west. So many YTbers made a comparison and the results are horrible. Cocacola, sprite, heinz ketchup and much more are different in czechia and germany. But those prices are almost the same. we hate this so much.
@robinsebelova710311 ай бұрын
To clarify - Czechs have a bad experiences with minorities. The only well integrated minority were Jews. Czech germans betrayed us to third reich and were expelled back there after WWII. Communists tried to integrate roaming Gypsies by settling them down, of course without any success, so the current view (prejudices, though often true) on Gypsies/Roma is that of troublemakers, social welfare ticks and often outright criminals. Then came mrs Merkel and invited immigrants in. Those same migrants that has not integrated in France and Germany since general DeGaulle times. Young Muslim men, that come for rich social welfare systems of Germany and Sweden, but don't care about doing any actual work, or follow culture and laws of their new country. People are not stupid, they see Islamic barbarism on their daily news and have imagination. So this is the reason for anti-immigration mood. Ukrainians were another matter entirely - they worked in low-paid positions in Czech republic ever since 90', are christians, share many common values with Czechs, so generally are well tolerated. The movement against them is mostly on financial side - the Czech state is running in long-term deficit numbers and some saw subventions for Ukrainian refugees as unfair. Sadly the second rate food and other product quality is true. And it was really really hard to even bring that theme up in EU commission. Result was totally lackluster and toothless - nothing has changed.

the coke argument is more a critique of free market than EU though. and in many cases EU regulates the minimum and some countries like Germany even implement stricter rules, which can lead to differences in taste. look at tomatoes, which many unknowing buy from China, while italy forces importers to tell where there are from
@red_baron_cz88610 ай бұрын
@@nifrain9494 As a former international truck driver who has traversed almost all of Europe except Spain and the Nordic countries, I have a pretty clear idea of how much people earn in a given country and what the prices and quality of groceries are like west of the Czech Republic. Living in Germany (20 km from the Czech border and about 15 km from Poland), I am confronted with price differences of groceries within the EU, which concern me. For example, soft cheese ripening in Germany costs 1.2 EUR for 150 g, while the "same" cheese with lower quality and smaller quantity, probably made from Czech milk, costs 2-3 EUR. This brings me to another aspect, which is the quality of food. Before the Czech Republic joined the EU, we had some of the strictest food regulations, which could have had their advantages. However, many of these rules now seem to be neglected in favor of detailed regulations, such as the shape of bananas or the length of cucumbers, which does not take into account the actual quality and price of food. Furthermore, we were forced to change some norms and regulations under the threat of sanctions. This situation created additional challenges and concerns regarding the sovereignty of decision-making within the EU. Another concern is the EU's approach to migration and refugees. Some policies, such as quotas for redistributing refugees, are seen as imposing the opinions of some countries on others. This can create tension and resistance. Additionally, the decision-making process in the Czech Republic regarding the adoption of the euro as its currency is underway. This could result in another significant price increase following the inflation of the past two years, similar to what happened in Slovakia. However, wages would remain relatively stagnant. For instance, a factory worker in the Czech Republic might earn around 787.71 EUR per month, while the average net wage for a similar position in Germany ranges from 1500-1600 euros per month. This would not only lead to a rise in prices but would also put us at a disadvantage. The only beneficiaries of such a scenario would be multinational organizations and companies, such as Kaufland, Penny, VW, and others. Moreover, the intensified border controls with Germany, where police actively inspect every vehicle without a German license plate, raise questions. Such rigorous control appears to contradict the principles of the Schengen Agreement, especially considering the free movement of people within the EU. It is essential for the Czech Republic to carefully consider the implications of adopting the euro and to ensure that decisions are made in the best interest of its citizens. While I am not opposed to free travel and economic cooperation, once it begins to encroach upon a country's culture, sentiments, and traditional values, I regard it as dictatorial. Czech history has seen instances of dictatorship during the times of Austria-Hungary, World War II, and later under Communist rule. People now fear what they see because they are familiar with these situations, expecting further dictates from Brussels.

@@red_baron_cz886 I can't overstate just how well this comment sums up the entire notion. I would like to add that most of the poorer regions, like Ústecký or Karlovarský, are more often than not ignored on almost every level both from our government and the EU itself in favor of Prague or, sometimes, Brno. You can see this the most with the latest reforms regarding schools, where it makes sense in Prague to a large degree, but completely undermines said regions. The entire sentiment regarding the EU is further worsened by acts like this that have continued ever since the 2012 market crash. I still remember how due to EU regulations, we had to "throw out" local butter and milk due to producing too much and overshotting quotas, to which people then either sold to outside the republic or it landed on the nearest compost. By pure coincidence, later in the same month, the EU regulations were amended to include forceful buying of non-czech goods from other EU countries. Whilst it makes sense on paper due to efforts of uniting the economy, it has done naught but further sour the already poor relationship.

As a Czech I can tell that we unfortunetly, don't have any strong proEU party which would be in a right spectrum, most party's sees EU just as milking cow, or the devil in our background like USSR once was. General population is still a bit bitter and sceptic towards the West, becouse of the past. We see mostly only nonsence from the EU, and not the good things, thanks too media and populists. And right now we are really frustrated, because we are slowing down, compared towards our neighbors. Poles are the most comparable country towards us, and they are getting really ahead of us in many aspects, which never happend. This slowing is thanks to high bureucracy, which cames especialy from our pasts goverments and also from the EU parlament and current crisis from the last 4 years, Covid and Ukraine, had huge impact on our economy and we still didn't manage to recover. Our paychecks are relativly "low" (for central Europe), our basic needs are one of the highest in EU, and thanks to this people are looking for miracle in form of populits, which will make thinks only worser. These populist are making our political discusion toxic as much as they can do, other partys don't calm down the situation, and mostly throw oil into the fire. People are starting hate each other for their political believes, just becouse of this toxicity. I hope it will get better, but for that, we would need some strong party, with strong leaders, but we don't have that here. Some party/movement which would educate general population better about EU, so people would stop thinking backwards about EU, or EU would finally start to do some big changes for better than adding more regulations, that will definetly make people look on EU in better light. But that's the politics, all an all life here is nice, but it could be definitely much better. So come and visit us, and not just the Prague, but even rest of the country 😁🇨🇿 And thanks for the video ❤

Voters were happy to have nearly free sausages which they grandson will pay for them with 500% price. I was passing by Prague once. It is truly one of the gems of Europe. Oh and the Czech beer... It's world class. 😍 I do have to say, however, that in my own experience, the Czech pride in their own country is a bit too commonly expressed in a rather odd way. I'm saying odd because I've seen it both in life and especially online Czechs expressing love for their country in a form of looking down on the others kind of way, similar how the French at times do. I wonder why that's the case? I hope the much needed reforms will come through and the Czech people will feel more at ease within the union sooner rather than latter. 🍻

Only the LGBTQ or Green deal is addressed, Germany closes nuclear power plants, which affects energy prices here as well.The migration crisis is solved by redistribution instead of effective sending back to the place of origin, already at the external borders of the EU It takes common sense. As a Czech myself (20) I approve of this video. Nicely done, correct information, and on point. One thing that I would like to mention is that there is a problem of older people having so-called "problems" with the EU, they are easily disinformed and manipulated. The youth are more open to the European Union and democratic parties, but because some politicians are "bribing" the elderly (raising pension pay, etc), its hard to "out-vote" them and make a significant difference.

Im Czech. The large Eurosceptism in our country is also caused by Russian propaganda in our country and by political party called SPD (in Czech: Svoboda a přímá demokracie, which btw means: Freedom and direct democracy) and that party is also pro-Russian and anti-european, but still we are relatively good when we compare it to Slovakia, where pro-Russian suport is over 50% (in our country it is around 10%). The benefits from EU are very important for us, but still large part of our population dont want to admit losing larger part of sovereignty. Lower GDP per capita in our country is caused by communist rule, but before WW2 we were in 10 richest and 10 military strongest countries in the world, but Munich betrayal came, and all was gone.

That is only partially true. The government just cares about how to fill pockets - their own and their friends. They don't care about expensive energies, problems in underfinanced healthcare and school system. Sadly, the opposition is much the same. Common citizens see a green deal as a cause of expensive energies, since Germany closed their atomic powerplants and will close its coal ones too. And yes, EU is often remembered in optics of Munich Betrayal of 1938 - about us, without us. And that makes people angry.

One of the biggest and often ommited facts about the 1993 split is that this was done without a referrendum, in which they would quickly learn that people didn't really intended the split to happen. This thing literally split families (and I'm speaking here from my family's experience as well, my granny lived in Slovakia at the time, and by that split she became a citizen of Slovakia, separating her from the rest of our family). If they asked people wether they wanted the split, they would realize that "no" would be the answer. Trying to find the mutual agreement for running the country would be the driving point to embrace the likeliness rather than the differences. I was born 3 years after the split. Myself, I wish we would never separate.

Czech here, the video is pretty accurate. There's a decent amount of euroscepticism. Like some people have already mentioned, we have had a lot of bad experience with foreign powers ruling our lands. And sadly a lot if Czechs view the EU as another "foreign overlord" that makes up rules we have to follow and have no control over. People don't understand how the EU works or what it really is and the advantages we have gained from our membership. People love to complain but are unwilling to learn or try to make a change. The turnout in the last EU elections was ~29% and that was the highest ever lol. This mindset is then exploited by populist politicians who complain about the policies of the "bureaucrats in the EU", while often their own EU MPs voted for these policies. At least there isn't a realistic push for a Czexit (Czech-out?), we just love to complain.

As a former international truck driver who has traversed almost all of Europe except Spain and the Nordic countries, I have a pretty clear idea of how much people earn in a given country and what the prices and quality of groceries are like west and east of the Czech Republic.I Living in Germany (20 km from the Czech border and about 15 km from Poland), I am confronted with price differences of groceries within the EU, which concern me. For instance, a factory worker in the Czech Republic might earn around 20000 Czk (788 EUR) per month 5EUR per hour , while the average net wage for a similar position in Germany ranges from 2126 per month (13,5eur/H) and interestingly, in Belgium they get more than 30 euros per hour for the same work.
@MrToradragon10 ай бұрын
On the other hand adoption of the Euro would make the price difference much more visible and argument that it is due to exchange rates and so would disappear. while now the exchange rate could vary by 2-3 crowns per euro within a year, with Euro the difference in exchange rate would completely disappear and thus the price, in theory could go down by some 10-20 %.
@SMJSmoK9 ай бұрын
IMO the immigration point is basically obsolete now since the Ukraine war started. Together with Poland and Slovakia, we are among the most refugee sheltering EU countries right now. If there was any redistribution of refugees, it definitely wouldn't be into here.
@red_baron_cz8869 ай бұрын
@@MrToradragon While the argument about exchange rates would indeed disappear, numerous other arguments would emerge. We would need to convert our systems to be compatible with the Euro (although technically adept individuals know it would essentially just involve software reinstallation). Many small businesses would lose their competitive edge due to the transition to the Euro, as they would have to raise prices, etc. etc.
@MrToradragon9 ай бұрын
@@red_baron_cz886"Simple" update of some IT system should not be taken into consideration in this regard, while it indeed would cost some money, it quite possibly would be compensated by savings on FX rate. But then, bear in mind that it is already possible to bill in Euro and that it should not take long before companies will be able to pay their taxes in Euro as well. How long will it take before it propagate through the whole industry? We might be only years away from de-facto transition to Euro as corporations will most likely try to simplify their systems and would push their suppliers into acceptance of payments in Euro, and in turn those might be again pushing their suppliers (and other customers, maybe) to this transition. Then, in worst case scenario, we would have economy with most of the transactions done in Euro and some people being paid in Euro, some in CZK with the conversions being done at the wors possible place, at micro businesses and by individuals. During the transition, the FX rate would be fixed for some period and on the eve of transition, everything that costs 100CZK would cost 4€ (FX rate 25CZK/1€), would you mind elaborate more why should, all of sudden, businesses have any reason to make things more expensive? There is no inherent or logical reason to do so. Well one exists, the fact that employees would demand higher wages as they would see that they are paid less than people doing the same job on the other side fo the border and they would not need to do some conversion math to see it. Especially if the consumer prices would be more or less the same, or rents, or prices of properties, or whatever other item we would be comparing. If that would be the case, and would it be the case even after we would not need to worry about FX rate, it would mean that the businesses were only competitive due to underpaying their workers or contractors and I do not thing that it is something that we should support. Maybe it seems like great economic strategy to be able to produce cheaply, but in the long run it can have, and already has, detrimental effects on society. As well bear in mind that change of FX rate by 1 CZK, or by roughly 4%, is equivalent to loss of some 150 billion CZK from savings and as well it can mean loss of 1-2 years of pay rises in span of days. That again has negative impact on society and it's stability. In the long run. There is one significant problem with the CZK, it seems like it reacts more strongly to actions taken by ECB and FED, than by ČNB, now the question is whether, under those circumstances, it even makes sense to have independent currency with floating FX rate.

Beautifully done! I think that the situation will change a bit with a younger generation which is not that EU-sceptic, year by year the pro-EU population is growing in polls, so we´ll see. The biggest reason people do not like EU here is that they do not trust any type of government since Austrian-Hungarian Empire, they also feel like the EU demanded things which should be up to national states. The problem is also language, since most of the older people do not speak English, and it is hard to understand EU politics when you are limited to Czech language. Just one correction, Hitler took the rest of our country BEFORE the WWII.

The main reason we are sceptist about EU is the fact that in the last 100 years, we were many times occupied and run either by the germans or the russians. We do not want others to rule our nation, we do not want some bureaucrats in some distant land to tell us whats best for us. We had enough of this, we have enough of this. We want pure partnership - thats what we voted for in 2003 in the referendum. Nothing more, nothing less.

As you've mentioned in the video, as much as we support Ukrainians, the government gives them way more than they give our people in need- They receive more money than our seniors, our struggling parents and some of our disabled! The EU needs to understand that it cannot dictate social policies to individual countries. That crosses a line, and member states will revolt against it. The EU is an economic entity, and it works well as such, but you can't dictate how sovereign states deal with their own social and political adversities. At some point, sovereignty is taken away and no country in the world will stand for that. So, if you want an EU, watch your step. Europe functioned before the EU existed, and it can function after. Talk of countries exiting the EU has steadily risen, and it's not hard to see why.

I as Czech I am for EU but I also agree that EU should focus more on its own citizens and less on refuges and also I am more for centralization of EU we need work as one if we want achieve what USA is today (economically) . my political stance is mixed but bit center-left with Eurocentric ideas

Centralization? Hmm, this was same thing, what SSSR did, and it backfired misserably.

@@radeksilar543 maybe but I think it was partly because of Russian culture and developing justice system I believe for us it would end up little differently today. but I agree there must be some regulation to make it work. important would be true democracy and not what Russia think is democracy (having Stalin/Putin in power until he dies) and also Russia (soviet union) as communistic nation instead of preferring everyone equally they preferred Russian citizens especially under Stalin and did atrocities similar to what did Nazi in ww2

As a Czech myself, I am glad you've picked this exact history moment for your video; as for a brief moment we have a president and a political representation I can actually feel proud of (sorta).

Very good video. Nice to see all sides represented and for the first time actually explained really well. One thing: Is the usage of GDP per capita really that useful? I have seen more people prefer to use GDP PPP per capita instead...

Yes i have had many people say this. I will consider it for future videos. Thanks for your comment and watching the video!
