Hi! How's it going? I have no good memories of Bulgaria because of bad policemen robbing us on our way to vacation in Turkey when I was a kid. Can you please tell me something positive about your country? I have no bulgarian friends and all the news about you that reaches me is bad. Even when I lived in Michigan USA, my dentist there complained about Bulgaria because she adopted her son from there and I think she confused our two countries. 😞

As a Pole, I am 100% sure that if Romania does not make the same mistakes that we are making now (taking money away from people who work like an ox and giving to those who do not want to work, a.k.a. socialism) it will overtake us economically and in a brutal way, and I am keeping my fingers crossed for you as much as possible. In fact, I can't say a single bad word about Romanians, with whom I am in contact practically all the time, they are all awesome people. I envy your good method of learning English at school, we should apply this in Poland. What else... aaah, it pisses me off how people confuse Roma, with Romanians, empty heads without knowledge.... Well, and I am glad that finally our countries are starting to cooperate more and more, even militarily, in these times it is especially important.

Funny you say that. A study showed that poles hate romanians more than russians, to not mention the not so “friendly” comments I saw on social media. I understand your loyalty to the hungarians, but I will remind you that WE helped you in 1939. We don’t really forget your betrayals in the 15th, 16th and 17th century, and the fact that you called us “gypsies”. So, don’t expect a lot of favours from us in the future, especially in your “diplomatic” conflicts against the germans.

Actually we are doing the same mistake. The "Social democrat party" is getting ready to raise the taxes for the ones that work like an ox and pay their contributions, while handing out free money for the lazy part of the population and also forgetting about the 10% GDP annual evasion. The problem with the Rroma and Romanian is a long time issue and it just tends to get worse over the years. Romanians have a very good opinion about Poland and we like the way your country is heading. Cheers!

I do understand it's something we can't really do much about it, it needs time and a few entire cycles of generations. I mean, i too with all my desire and effort to be better still fall at times in some old pitfalls of racism and discrimination. Old emotions, memories, can't be removed and generalization and profiling it's something we all do without even thinking, it's our build in statistics measuring tool. It's how our brains work, hence why also we struggle with true randomness or even why we can't really do very long time planning and keep those plans through generations, as there always is friction between young and old people and their approaches and ideas. I say we all are kids and i suppose one example for that is how we all resist change kicking and screaming but after a while after the change sets in, most will agree it was for the better.

I'm a hungarian and I love living here. Romania joining the EU has changed the country for the better and I could see the slow but significant improvement in quality of life for over 2 decades. If it were not for the EU a lot of us would be still driving Dacias and having poor paychecks, thank God we're in the EU. I live in peace among my romanian neighbours, and I love them as much as my hungarian friends. My only complaint is the school system which fails to integrate ethnic minorities (such as hungarians, but not just) into the country by NOT teaching romanian as a foreign language (they're teaching it as if it would be everyone's first language). I hope to see this change in the future for the better of everyone. Being able to comfortably and fluently speak the national language is a win-win for both romanians and minorities. I hope to see our relations only build upwards. Much love to my romanian brothers!

Romanians' perspective is basically, help us help you. After decades of communism and being tied by force to Russia, the majority craves freedom and a chance. No doubt there are problems that have yet to be overcome, like corruption, from which most other problems stem, but overall there have been a lot of change for the good since adhering to EU and NATO. The Schengen fiasco is a bad mark for Austria, which has been accused of being Russia's puppet lately. Surely blaming Romania for their immigration problems makes no sense since Romania is neither their neighbour nor one of the main routes of immigration into Europe, and this is the exact thing that Right wing extremist parties feed on to fuel anti EU sentiment.

I only visited Bucharest but I got a great impression of Romania (I am aware over centralisation is one of the issues). The amount of construction and general development obviously going on all over the city is impressive. I saw a lot more active younger people going around in suits and meeting and working in cafes than I've seen in London or Edinburgh. People and businesses have an effective no bullshit attitude, all the every day things have not yet been taken over by multinationals and they might not let it happen and grow properly within instead. If I had to bet on future prosperity, it's a good bet. I like the way they had enough of Ceaușescu and chucked him out properly, the best example of overthrowing an autocrat and getting on with things.

Business-wise, we're a pretty active nation and fairly entrepreneurial-minded. Less multinationals than in Western Europe, but they have a visible presence. As for Ceușescu's regime, I am quite happy with the way my parent's generation solved the problem - permanently. That said, I will give Ceușescu props for ZERO foreign debt when he 'left office', but it was done far too quickly and at too great of an expense to the people of the nation. That said, social stability > GDP. Don't get me wrong, GDP matters, but not as much as having a safe country where you don't have to worry about regular stabbings, car fires, or 'protests' that leave parts of a city in ruins. Or nutjobs that glue themselves to roads and throw paint over national monuments, for that matter. As a bit of an Anglophile with many friends (and former girlfriends) from the British Isles, I really do hope the UK manages to find its identity again soon.

Romania was only country in world without external debt. That was in 1989. In 1993 we signed the EU accession agreement and in 2007 we were accepted. Now, in 2023, after help and guidance of UE and other international bodies (World Bank, International Monetary Fund etc) we have over 160 billions € external debt. In 1989 the country was heavily industrialized, it produced absolutely everything locally, from marine oil platforms, to heavy water for nuclear power plants, to the steel industry, to the textile industry etc. The country has significant amounts of natural resources, oil, gas, gold, ferrous and non-ferrous ores etc.Agriculture was highly mechanized, with intense irrigation and achieved very large productions. Now, in 2023, the industry is almost non-existent, we import absolutely all finished products. The big factories were sold to foreigners who bankrupted them after 2-3 years. Agriculture is doing badly, we import goods that we used to have in abundance. Also, over over 60% of the agricultural land is owned by foreigners. We had the third largest ocean fishing fleet in the world, now we don't have it at all. So.... But hey, at last we have coke, Mc Donald`s and democracy.

Indeed. And for some reason Europeans tend to overlook this every time, siding with the hungarian whiners.... even though, their government goes against so many EU standards. They only chose to focus on what our leaders did back in WW2 ( without too much context obviously, and casually overlooking that hungary was on the same side ) paying no mind to how the austro-hungarians treated us throughout history : LIKE CATTLE ! ..many of them still do ! calling us hairy apes, or some sort of hobbit like creature, etc. ( and not just because our gypo minority, they include everyone ) Just watch ANY social media post about Transilvania & you'll see what I'm talking about. It's also not just the politicians who are dead set on implementing this hatred, it's the people too... like a generational thing with them. Like a constant revisionist theme interwoven with an age old SPITE that seeks to DESTROY the justice of the Trianon treaty and the peace we strived to work for ever since, for the subjugated peoples living in said empire. Both sides have their ultras with pitchforks, and both have their arguments, but I honestly feel like the hungarians are taking it a step further. I truly hope the EU doesn't turn a blind eye to their political leader's behaviours ( and their ties with ruzzian government / oligarchs who CLEARLY seek to destabilize the region, with aims of redrawing the map and causing more chaos ) Have an EU commission look into the shadow organizations overtly investing in Transilvania through the hungarian government too, because I'm pretty sure that's illegal. Romania has 45% of its population living in rural areas (way above the EU average). The challenge is that participation in the economy for people living in rural areas is minimal. For example, Bucharest has a higher GDP per capita than Berlin, but overall Romania's GPD is at the lower end of the EU. On the positive side, things have also been progressing in rural areas with the help of EU funding (roads, agriculture), and there are perspectives for Romania to further lower the gap vs. Western countries.

45% lives in rural areas, sure, but the majority of those 45% live in rural areas that are 5-20km away from big cities, so majority of people in those rural villages/towns actually work in cities and contribute just as much. This is not a real problem, and it actually is a good thing, moving the entire population in cities creates higher density areas, that creates higher rents and expensive houses, that creates poorer people and more homelessness, look at Romania, because we have so many people still living in rural areas, we are number 1 at most people that live in houses they own or their parents own, compared to western countries where over 50% live in rent.

@tomorrowneverdies567

The fact that GDP pc in cities (all over the world) is higher in cities, rather than in the countryside, does not mean that people in the city have better lives than those in the countryside. Why? Because: 1. The wealth in the cities belongs, is produced, and goes back to wealthier people. So business owners, managers, etc. If you are a worker, you may be poorer in the city, where many people want to go to have access to "amenities" such as cinema. So cities are wealthier because they have bigger frequency of very productive people in their income distribution. But the rest could be poorer than in the countryside. 2. Depending on the city, if the city is the opposite of beautiful (Emperor/king of mankind YT does not allow us to write the u-word here) then people there live less good lives, than people in the countryside. To me, in Europe the only cities worth living in, compared to the respective countryside, are the cities in "germanic" countries.

I'm Romanian and been living abroad for almost 13 years. I'm actually really proud this video-analysis is the first one in your new project, means a lot to me and other Romanians. I have to say it's pretty objective description of my country regarding internal and external affairs, politics, society etc. Well done! Romania's economy, living standards, infrastructure, industry, military and maybe even agriculture has been steadily growing in the past 2 decades. The country has had it's fare share of stagnation in some areas, wake up calls, accidents and near misses at national scale. The government, which has gotten more stable in the past 3-4 years, it's trying to implement big reforms in all critical areas of society. We also meet and exceed the Schengen requirements, and yet because of some massive economic interests from both The Netherlands and Austria, we still have to endure this rejection humiliation. I don't understand how Greece, with no Schengen neighbours and with much more internal and external instability, being literally at the south-east corner of EU, with so many islands shared between Greece and Turkey, they were accepted to join. I personally can't wrap my head around certain workings that are happening in the EU. "I don't understand how Greece, with no Schengen neighbours and with much more internal and external instability, being literally at the south-east corner of EU, with so many islands shared between Greece and Turkey, they were accepted to join. So there was no reason not to accept Greece by anyone else in Schengen/EU back then. "I personally can't wrap my head around certain workings that are happening in the EU" - don't worry, you are not the only one. About 99.99% of the people around you are in the same place. Personally, I try not to waste my precious time in their politics (and I say "their", because I can prove that I have no say on politics). And thirdly, why is not being in Schengen zone something "humiliating" for you, or for Romania? Is the US in the Schengen zone? Is Canada? The UK? Russia? Belarus? Ukraine? And if you find being in the Schengen z. so important, then it is easy: the only thing the romanina government must do, is to make sure that nobody enters its borders illegally. I can tell you also that the Schengen agreement/treaty was partially annuled/waived in 2015 (and before even) at least for my country Greece, although I am not sure of the reason. Also I remember when I last travelled to Germany, in August 2013, that all passengers of our plane had to pass border control at the airport, and policemen asked us questions about why we came to Germany, how long we will stay, and to see proof of what we said. And this was in 2013, although, as I said, I am not sure why they did it.

Thanks for starting the series with our country! EU membership and private investments from friendly countries has brought prosperity that was unthinkable 20 years ago in our country. We now enjoy a lifestyle that is not that different from Western European countries. that's a blanket statement (on prosperity) which is true only regionally, in key/hub cities. Yes, the Bucharest/Ilfov agglomeration has above EU average PPP (purchasing power parity), higher than some lands in Germany, while the north-east counties are still the poorest counties in the EU by any measure. If your job is in one of the Pipera business parks and you commute from Corbeanca I can understand the rosy colored tint on your glasses. Also, parts of Ferentari are still the worst slums in Europe, not just the EU. While the prosperity is real, this is a country of very sharp contrasts.

Thi video and the idea behind it are very good, and I am looking forward to watching the other one. Regarding the content of this specific video I think that it was very well done. As an italian living in Romania since 4 years ago I can say that joining the EU was an enormous advantage for the country. The european founds and politics have had a very positive impact in the region, and I think that also most of the people realize it. As you say in the video there is a very big economical mismatch between many people, especially between the ones living in the cities and the ones living in the countryside, where EU economical help is not arriving, or arriving partially. But this lack of allocation of funds and investments it is not due to joining the EU, rather than many corrupted local politicians who are not investing in their towns or villages. Neverthless I think that by keep pushing its economy, Romania has the strong potential to become an important member of the EU, but the local corruption and lack of faith in many people may undermine the stability of the country, and slow down its developement process.

Moldova is made up of Romanians (approximately 80%). Many of them have been brainwashed by Soviets to think they're different from the rest of Romania after the Soviets took them by force from us in WW2. But many kept their Romanian heart and souls and gave them to the next generations. Nowadays Moldova has a Pro EU Parliament, Government and President. They've closed out all Russian speaking TV channels and are doing much better on corruption handling. The Russian influence (which continued the Soviet fake propaganda that they aren't Romanians even though they share common History, Culture and Language with us here in Romania) is decreasing a lot. More than 1/3 of Moldovians already have Romanian citizenship (albeit for working in the EU more so than for symbolic gesture) and one poll showed that 50% of them would vote to Reunite with Romania again, like it happened in 1918 and 1941. I'm positive they will join EU/NATO either by themselves or instantly when they will unite with us again.

10:39 That is an utter lie from Karl Nehammer, most immigrants to the EU go through Greece, Italy and Croatia who are part of the EU and last year Croatia was accepted into the Schengen zone while Romania and Bulgaria weren't, even if a lot more migrants cross Croatia and Serbia than Romania. Romania's Constanta port is seen as a possible rival to Netherlands' Rotterdam port if Romania joins the Schengen Zone. And Austria's KMG International's of which the Romanian Rompetrol oil extraction company is a subsidiary of. A similar Austrian company that extracts oil in Romania is OMV. The Austrians blackmailed Romanians to exploit the newly found oil from Romania's Black Sea in order for them to enter Schengen. Huge Austrian timber companies like Holzindustrie Schweighofer also exploit Romania's last virgin forests and already deforested vast areas through illegal logging. The Austrians as well as other Western European countries want to keep Romania poor in order to further to exploit it further and not become an economic rival since it has middle to big population for European standards where most EU countries have less than 15 million people. Austria has also close relations with Russia, especially Russian oil and gas companies, and Vienna is the hub of Russian spies in Europe and has been one since the communist times (a reason why Austria is not part of NATO to this day)

All parties in Romania are accused of having nothing to do with their claimed orientation on the political spectrum: The liberals aren't liberal, and the socialists aren't socialistic. PSD's main interest is securing funds through state employees and thus controls naming of directors in hospitals, schools and local administration. PNL is also interested in local administration but they tend to have closer ties with large companies. Also, PSD tends to have a llarger interest in the ministry of education where they secured some dirty money from Microsoft and Siveco, while PNL is mostly interest in infrastructure contracts and the ministry of transportation where having overpriced and delayed contracts is a common sight.
