You should do monks, their problem is basically the same as Rangers. Except instead of Aragorn it's a half forgotten character named Remo Williams from "The Destroyer" book series. You'll hear that Monk was based on other things but if you read the books or watch the movie its clear like 85% of the monk is lifted directly from Remo. The origin for the entire character class was because one of the original devs was a HUGE FANBOY of Remo and they did it just for them.

Most races' visual design is just 'differently shaped/coloured human'. Dragonborn are so amazing because they're NOT human-esque - as cool as the idea is, I think it honestly waters their visual design down to put so many human elements back into them.
@rgilbert36142 жыл бұрын
My campaign has a heraldry-type connection between dragonborn, kobolds, and humanoid sorcerors. Basically, a dragonborn is the first generation offspring from a relationship between dragon and humanoid race. The farther they get from that heritage the more they look like either kobolds or humans (depending on whom they pair with). But the lore for my world is pretty wild so it probably wouldn't work in other campaigns.

This is actually really similar to my most recent dnd character turned into campaign villain! I made a Dragonborn named Miso who's whole schtick is that they hate gods and dragons for having been made into 'Unpaid Interns' and now seek to destroy the influences of gods and dragons upon the people so that they may create a world that is truly free. I ended up loving the concept so much I just keep them more as an npc rather than a player character
@ahealthkit27452 жыл бұрын
Ironically, playing a meiji-period Japan inspired dragonborn character, I did almost the opposite. The lore for that character was that their original clan's leader was a dragon who sought to uplift their 'unpaid interns', foretold the spellplague and evacuated a huge amount of dragonborn to Kozakura, on Toril (fantasy japan). While the clan's leaders are now just parts of the mythology of the land, their benevolent spirit lives on in the form of the kami. My character was a paladin, with a modified oath centered around protecting one's kin, protecting family and cultural values, and ensuring Draconic superiority. He was raised to seek the unification of dragons and their original god, Azgorath (renamed Chromatus, along with some substantial rewriting of the base Forgotten Realms lore around them) in order to repel an invasion by fantasy China (Kara-tur), who had used magical items to enslave some of the original dragons that sought to protect their lesser dragonkin (kobolds, dragonborn) and now sought to destroy my character's culture and traditions by occupying Kozakura with indoctrinated dragonborn samurai, who still secretly support many of their original beliefs.

Y'know my idea was to pull from other mythologies related to dragons, I have a backlog character that's a gold dragonborn paladin (IT GETS MORE INTERESTING I PROMISE!) but instead of a standard dragon inspiration, his physicality is based more on East Asian dragon lore, his fire damage breath is a blast of boiling river water, his features are more slender and snakelike than bulky like the wyrms of European lore, he has a mustache like East Asian dragons and "hair" that's a wild matte of vibrant fire colored feathers extending in an approximation of a mullet over his back, and his personality is based on Dinidan the laughing knight of Arthur's round table because this oath of the ancients paladin is a wandering music junkie who spreads "the light" by lending aid to any travellers he comes across and aggressively sharing the good vibes of the world with everyone he meets.

I have been working on the idea of making it so that, in some of my dnd settings at least, either metallic dragons or the celestial equivalents to angels for Bahamut are eastern inspired: flying without wings, more associated with wing and water, having both scales and plumage, possesing great healing and magic, etc With Fizban I´ve been also considering the possibility of gem dragons being the ones that work like this, floating due to psionics instead of wings, with iridescent bodies, more mysterious or less known than their cousins and often associated to magical gemstones or pearls more than precious metals

If you have ye old Draconomicon or Fizbans guide, you can do this! Their is, in the section on Draconic Gifts, a Gift of Draconic Rebirth. So a dragon can give this gift to a favored kobold servant, for example, and turn them into a dragonborn. they also got some rules for variations on how half dragons can be created. Some pretty cool stuff. A deep dragon in my campaign (an older classic one from older editions/campaigns not the new Mushroom Mutant) has over the years slowly turned more and more of his shorter lived servants into dragonborn or half dragons infused with purple dragon colors and abilities. so when his kobold and human employees get old... he gives em a Gift and puts em back to work lol Kinda promotes them from office and warehouse clerks 😂 to mercs and treasure guards. 😊 Fizbans got a lot of fun stuff and good tables to roll on.

(I’ve been doing a LOT of those lately but they’re just so varied and fun I can’t help it lol) But yeah, Tiefling with any chromatic ancestry (red, black, and blue? Or green? Work best for a literal color pallet the best with typical Tiefling colors) so you get a Tiefling with lots of extra scales on their skin and especially around their horns and tails! I had the same issue with the vanilla lore of Dragonborn, but I have an obsession with making my character's story match the world they live in, so I very much took bits and pieces from the forgotten realms lore and exaggerated different elements to create a different flavor of dragon born heritage. In the heavily modified version of Tomb of Annihilation that my group plays in, I created a ton of unique lore for my Eastern-dragon themed Dragonborn Paladin character and for my friend's Dragonborn Wizard character. I basically re-wrote huge portions of the Forgotten Realms lore regarding the creation of the dragons. Here's the jist of it. Chromatus (generally a facelift of IO/Azgorath; A dragon god with 15 heads; One for each 'color' and 'type' of dragons, all the gem dragons, all the metallic dragons, and all the chromatic dragons.) assisted in the creation of Abeir-Toril, siding with the primordials. He seeded the world with the Reptilian races (Lizardfolk, Snakefolk, etc), but was sealed away by the intervening gods for this. Some time later, an empire of Reptilians freed Chromatus, who then created the first dragon flights, waging war on the giants and the gods. This war drags on for far too long, and Chromatus regrets putting his kin through so much suffering. He empowers fifteen of his Draconic generals into enlightened Guardians of Dragonkind. Each is blessed with a sliver of Chromatus's power, becoming true-born metallic, chromatic and gem dragons. These empowered dragons are tasked with assisting Chromatus in his new goal; Split the world into two! One world for the kin of the elementals and the dragons, and the other for the gods. During the ritual, something goes awry. It's implied to be ancient lore, and many dragons and dragonkin have varying takes on what happened. Some say it was a betrayal from a group of Guardian dragons, others say it was an attack from the Primordials intended to disrupt the ritual, others still say it was all a part of the plan of Chromatus, while those who worship the later dragon gods claim that Chromatus went mad. Either way, Chromatus's goal of splitting the world was successful, but at a grave cost. The god of Dragons was shattered into three, Bahamut; The god of Metallics, Tiamat, the goddess of Chromatics, and Sardior; The god of Gem dragons. Due to the new personalities and war-like mentality of the descendants of Chromatus as well as potential resentment over splitting them from what was rightfully theirs (Toril), the Primordials relationship with the majority of Dragon-kind worsens greatly. Initially referred to as the Triumvirate, Bahamut, Tiamat and Sardior begin to infighting. Guardian dragons and other powerful ancient dragons from the wars on Abeir-Toril fret over which of the three dragon gods to worship. Others still pledge allegiance to the Primordials, who they believe are the true creators of Abeir and Toril. A schism forms when the followers of Tiamat begin to wage war against the elemental titans dwelling on Abeir, against the counsel of Bahamut, Sardior and the majority of the Guardian dragons. The power Tiamat's dragonkin received for devouring the elemental titans made them a considerable threat to the rest of Dragonkind, kicking off the first Dragon war on Abeir. The war is long and bloody, fueled by dragons devouring elemental titans for their powers. At the height of the war, the dragon-god Sardior is slain, while Tiamat mysteriously goes missing (thought to have been summoned to Toril). In the wake of the war's abrupt and bloody end, Bahamut and the remaining Guardian dragons outlaw dragon-god worship on Abeir. The unfair over prosecution of Tiamat worshipers led to another split, with the majority of dragons formerly loyal to Bahamut becoming disenfranchised with his cruelty to their kin. Around this time, independent dragons begin to form petty kingdoms on Abeir, using a blood ritual to create lesser dragonkin; like kobolds and dragonborn. Most dragonlords treat their newborn kin as slaves from birth, expected to carry out the less-pleasant but necessary tasks of forming an army to protect their hoards and sacred places. The few Guardian dragons that remain are mostly sympathetic to their lesser dragonkin; while they are never treated as equals, they are given the opportunity to be bestowed with great power in reward for their service. Additionally, the Guardian dragons have an upperhand over the rest of the dragons on Abeir; They can use the power they received from Chromatus to divine the future of dragon kind. Most of these visions predict a second dragon war, but gradually, more visions predict portals opening up across the realm in the wake of the Spellplague. Those that have these visions report hearing voices beckoning them through to the other side. Eventually, these portals open up. 9 Guardian dragons decide to lead their clans through the portals, while the remaining six decide to remain on Abeir, using magic secretly stolen from the gods long ago to enact a form of connection through the portals allowing them to spy on the other dragon clans on Abeir, while the rest seek new lives on Toril. This magic also allows them to spiritually connect to their kin, acting as advisors and leaders to those who reach out to them. This meditative practice is called Jundo. Many of the Guardians defect from the original plan. A group of them abandon their clans and side with enthralling factions on Toril, such as the Shou, or the dragon cults of Tiamat. The confused and abandoned lesser dragonkin form their own clans and go their separate ways, while others elect to remain with their draconic overlords. Eastern-style Dragonborn are called Celestial Dragonborn, and are direct descendants of a Guardian dragon that chose to protect their lesser dragonkin, steering them away from the Shou and Kara-tur, and leading them to the islands of Kozakura. They worship Chromatus and practice Jundo as a way to connect with their once-unified ancestry. Over time, this faith gradually fell away as Dragonborn culture became more prominent in the area, overtaking the rule of dragons after the Guardian dragons that brought them to Kozakura faded away into mythology. Very recently, due to Shou occupation of Kozakura, a group calling themselves the Redoran have reingited worship of Chromatus in secrecy, as part of a movement intended to unify the celestial dragonborn against the Shou invaders, who seek to erase worship of Chromatus and replace it with practice of the 'Path of Enlightenment', a form of worship of the Celestial Bureaucracy. It's implied that each of the dragonborn clans have very different appearances, based generally on the Guardian they were born of. Some have tails or wings, some don't, some have breath weapons, some don't, some have distinctive features never seen on dragons native to Toril, due to their connection with the Guardians.

I love extremes. So the reasons to play Dragonborn: 1. Start 6 ft tall. Become Fighter Runic Knight. At 10 lvl become even taller. 2. Play Sorcerer Draconic Bloodline. 3. Play Monk Way of The Ascendant Dragon. 4. Play Ranger Drakewarden. (5) Be all of them. Fighter 11/Sorc 3/Monk 3/Ranger 3. Be more draconic than dragons.

Awesome videos man. I love the twists you make on things. I'm in a ToD campaign and I've got 4 total characters lined up, one of each of the subraces for the dragontouched. Plus, my DM loves it so much that he's built them into the campaign too!

I love these guys! I was a bit concerned at the start that these would be replacements for dragonborn, but having them both in cannon is very cool! I also love how varied they are, I imagine that will work very nicely in making some pretty interesting designs. As for dragonborn themselves, I've always liked them due to how unique their designs are. They (canonically at least) don't look like furriers, having more of a somewhat stout dwarph-like look with weird scale covered tendril dreadlocks (the females even no longer have tits!).

I think you’ve done a good job with the subrace for the Dragonborn! I’m still new to 5e lore so I didn’t know dragons had “unpaid interns” in the canon until now. My favorite animal is octopus. Cephalopods in general are super super fascinating to me. I have found some homebrew stuff but none of it really satisfied me and I wondered what your take might be for something cephalopodic and possessing tentacles, camo, or other stuff. I've tried to homebrew a race myself but my immense passion for how awesome and broken cephalopods are always gets in the way of balance.
@funnymonkey396111 ай бұрын
Take a human, give it a swim speed and the ability to breathe water. An octopus race would have 8 arms but only some of them should be usable so give them the thri-kreens secondary arm feature. Also to be accurate to the boneless anatomy of the octopus give it the plasmoids amorphous body feature. Boom, done

I love this concept! I am currently playing an Aasimar of Bahamut who is a lawful good cleric of life and a character that I worked with my DM to help design. They are the nicest person you will ever know and are also absolutely frightening when defending you from evil. I flavored him in such a way that he has white shimmering angelic wings, symmetrical small horns, iridescent silvery scale patches on his pale skin, sharper nails, pointed ears, and a silver dragon tail with aspects of feathery light golden fur and feathers. The rest of them is what you would expect from an aasimar: beautiful androgynous human body with no signs of any blemish, long lustrous (blonde) hair, and perching (sky blue) eyes. Kind of my take on what if angels of Bahamut existed that were not full dragons. And I wanted to highlight the life aspect of Bahamut’s domain using the protector Aasimar sub-race as well to emphasize how much the character values life (and love). They have the same stats as a protector aasimar and the dragon flare is mostly for looks/you know who his god is when you see him kind of deal and you should be either very afraid or very relieved. Also yea he is a good boy and will help you with anything and bake you sweets!

I'm playing a dragonborn at the moment but because I am playing a crystal dragonborn from Fizbans (A different origin stil!) I avoided the dragonborn backstory by having his egg stolen and sold off. I love your stream lined dragonborn origin story, It gives a much bigger better sense of identify for them as a race, and I feel like it adds a lot to their different motives and ideologies. I do enjoy the concept of the dragon touched but I feel that it is a bit too similar to the different tiefling subspecies and a weird middle step between using dragonborns as "interns" and later Kobolds
@EvelynNdenial2 жыл бұрын
this is pretty much cannon in forgotten realms, the creating draconic mutated humanoids that is. all chromatic half dragons come from it and many subraces with draconic influence are because of it, black dragon lizardfolk and frost giants drinking white dragon blood being two i remember from aj pickets video.

10:45 "Instead of looking for a way to continue living without the need to put others into forced servitude, dragons just looked for a way to have another go at it. But this time, they would make sure that whoever they kept under their thumb would never be able to leave them." So... they made kobolds, right? I mean, kobolds are usually depicted as being very devoted to dragons, idolizing them and wanting to be them. I highly doubt any of them would want to leave... "Dragons decided that the reason why dragonborn managed to escape was simply because they were TOO similar to dragons, and therefore too strong and too perfect. They made a servant that was too close to the master, and they made sure they didn't make that same mistake on their second try." Well, kobolds are more realistic, sometimes even underconfident, in mindset so this still checks out. I mean, sure they do look like dragons a bit, but they don't have a breath weapon and many can't fly. "The dragons took people from other races..." No... "They had an issue. To a dragon, they were simply too weak to serve them." No no no... "Dragons infused them with slivers of their own draconic magic to make them stronger..." No no no no no. "And so the dragontouched were born." And now you gave every kobold nightmares of a dragon creating a dragontouched gnome. Countless kobolds are going to fall asleep to dream they are serving a dragon master, only to be cast out as the dragon reveals a small gnome with a dragon arm. As the dragon berates the kobold, the gnome will approach our tiny friend and say words no kobold ever wants to hear. Words of mockery that every kobold has learned to despise, a statement that would shake any kobold out of their dream, a sentence that would make the kobold cry as it rings in their head. The dragontouched gnome says, "You just got *GNOMED!"*
@princeblackelf42652 жыл бұрын
Yeah tha was my first thought, cause canonically, Dragons DID make Kobolds, a saurian race too weak and craven to ever rebel. Kuturlmak, the kobold deity, was created by Tiamat as a servitor and in turn all mortal kobolds serve dragons now ( usually the evil ones) so it I am unware of Pointy Hat kind of just ignored that part or was unware that the dragons would have just made kobolds instead

I often play Dragonborn, it's one of my favorite races as I like playing Martial classes and I like Charisma classes. And I like dragons 😅. My breath weapon is usually Posion or Cold because I think those resistances are very useful. The Dragon-Touched seem really really cool and interesting, but it seems less of a spin on Dragonborn and more of a spin of adding (pardon the pun) draconic touches to other races. It seems less Dragonborn with a twist and more other races with a twist that happens to be draconic. I was hoping for a twist like, Sea or nature Dragonborns making them similar to Argonians in Elder Scrolls, or making Dragonborn subraces that would add to Dragonborns like the Courtly or Aetherial Elves. Like Dragonborns that despise their Dragonic heritage because they were... "interns" ... and try to look less draconic, which over the years changed them, or Dragonborns that lean into that Draconic Heritage and Weird Religion thing and worship their former masters as Gods becoming more bestial and dragon-like with Tails and stuff due to their desire to emulate their Gods. The Dragon-Touched feel more like a new race rather than a twist on an old one. I still like them, it just didn't seem right for the Dragonborn. Can you cover Warforged next?
@Itomon2 жыл бұрын
In my campagin, there is no dragonborn "race". Dragonborns are actual (chromatic) dragons that, once felled, received a bless/curse from Bahamut: they should reincarnate and survive as a "lesser" mortal form and prove themselves humble, caring and selfless through this existence. If they do, they can reborn again as a full dragon, a metallic one this time - that is why most Dragonborn thrive to be lawful good, but they also struggle with the pain of being lessened by this bless/curse. They are very rare, and by not being common knowledge, some ppl fear them, have prejudice against them (being chromatic spawns), while others may admire and even worship them as a divine-touched being

Same here ! I cannot overstate my love for dragons. Currently conjuring up dragon-centric setting. There are 12 dragon gods, which would also be the 12 dragon and dragonborn types. The 12 Eldwyrms (dragon gods) are divided into 3 spheres: Cosmic wyrms (order&time, chaos, void, star), Soul wyrms (darkness, light, life, death) and elemental wyrms (fire,water,earth,air) Dragons are descendants of the Eldwyrms and the dragonborn were created by the Eldwyrms. Currently looking at a way to make them more interesting to play and adapt their ancestry's too.

As of Fizbans, the Dragonborn can use their breath weapon more than 1/short rest there. There's also the variants from Wildmount. The first Dragonborn have little to do with the rest of them in games...in 3.5 they were one of the few LA+0 template "races" that were pretty interesting, they had been all highly religious as Bahamut's counter for the various Spawn of Tiamat that were coming into play at the time. Anyone following Bahamut (and sometimes some of other good dragon dieties). Some of them used to develop wings and other things there (And were theorized to have been based on the Dragon Kith) Then 4e tossed that and just made them another race. Also, the dragontouched you have could work better as just working from the various "Dragonblooded" races that also showed up in 3.5 (That are all various versions of races infused with dragonblood into them)

Its a cool idea, but I'm not a fan of the enforced asymmetry. Asymmetry is cool and should by all means be the more common form. I was actually planning on having a nation in my homebrew world based around draconic races. I was going to try to implement half dragons along with dragonborn but your idea could also be a nice extra touch to add. I envisioned the nation as pretty closed and a little racist, so with actual dragons as their rulers it wouldn't be out of the question for citizens to become dragon touched if they want.

When you were describing the lore, it's very similar to the kobolds, if you made the kobolds more generic since they strip the engineering and mining focus and giving a more generic proud buffed clan race. To be honest, I probably won't play one anyway, but I like the stats, if the GM allows me to reskin them as wyverns, drakes or actual dragons of some kind.
@princeblackelf42652 жыл бұрын
So , I am gonna say that for me personally, this one is a bit of a miss. It definitely reads " dragonborn for people that don't like dragonborn" which by your own admission, is a race that doesn't have any appeal to you. For me it kinda takes away everything that I like about the race and just makes them regular elves/humans/dwarves but with some extra stuff. In a lot of ways it sort of reminds of something WOTC would have come up with in 3.X as a very diluted attempt to give people that wanna play dragons or something draconic a bone thrown their way with a " there, happy now?" and we'd be like "...well no" cause it sort of is as removed from the original idea as can be without being completely removed , probably out of some fear of imbalance. While I am aware that the first version of Dragonborn appeared towards the end of the 3.X's life cycle the vast majority of it , we would have gotten something like this I like dragonborn because I love anything saurian. I grew up loving dinosaurs, this lead to a love of dragons and kaiju. Dragonborn are kind of like miniature kaiju, bipedal saurians that breathe energy attacks, and let me fulfill that fantasy. I am just glad we got Fizban recently to finally pep them up and give them stronger options
